recently I've had an idea that just would not leave me alone: people have done German orks and American orks, but I can't recall ever seeing any Soviet themed orks. so I grabbed some GS and some orks and made a few:

I've just been having trouble staying motivated to get this project really started over the past couple of days, because the first thing I need to do is dig through a bunch of boxes to find the rest of my unassembled orks before I can even start on building the army. I need some support from Dakka to keep me going on this, because it's going to be a long tough slog to not get distracted by some of my other projects and new shinies. I need Dakka to enforce Order No. 227 and keep me motivated, so please tell me what you think about this project, no matter what you think I need to hear from you so that I can maybe finally finish a full army.

Keep going Soviet armies have such strong visuals, it's a perfect match. Make sure you include grot(?) snipers.

Since the main colour of the uniforms would be drab green, what colour will you make the orc skin?

I'm using the Soviet painting guide on page 210 of the Flames of War book Red Bear, which lists the main uniform as more of a khaki than a drab green, so the orks will still be green. also I have some prototype lootas that were some of the first things I dug up:

I currently have not one, not two, but three designs for my lootas going right now. the first on to the left is a sort of machine gunner, the others are supposed to have Katusha rockets on their backs. the middle one has a fully enclosed rocket pod. and the far right one has the more traditional Katusha rack. I'm thinking I'm going to mix these three together, as I don't have enough bits to make all my lootas the same type.
next up I think I'll work on some BA-64 warbuggies made from the trukks I've been digging up. wish me luck

oh BTW yes there will be some snipers in this army, but they may be a unit of female snipers as counts as Tau allies.

Love unusually themed ork armies, although I will suggest two things:

#1 Check out Kromlech, they do a bunch of 'ork war 2' stuff, in particular interest to you would probably be the soviet-themed ork conversion bitz they sell.

#2 with regards to colour scheme, I'd say go crazy and worry too much about sticking to historical accuracy, maybe keep the clothes khaki but, as thematically matches both soviets and orks, go crazy with the red!

Good luck in your endeavours, and looking forward to great works in the future

I have looked at the Kormlech ork stuff, but it's more satisfying for me to use my own two hands to convert the orks, and it keeps them GW legal.

of course go crazy with the red! I'm also going to have some Cossack bikers so there's going to be some blue in there too. I'd like to keep the colors close enough to be recognizable as WW2 Soviets, but there's some parts where I can fudge the colors a bit.

thanks

now on to the meat of the matter:
I've got a few more prototypes to show you, and with my FLGS restocking their supply of boyz today I should be able to really crank up production (my main limiting factor of late was the lack of bodies and legs) I've started work on getting a sort of "assembly line" going on the basic boyz, as well as a smaller one for more of these:

these are those Tau allies I told you about. a unit of female ork snipers called the "Green Widows". once I get a full unit of boyz ready I'll start working on some fluff to explain how there can be female orks (they're actually humans who's DNA has been hybridized with that of orks, blame the Inquisition)

and this is my Big Mek, Svetlana. the fluff for her is that she's the adopted daughter of Warboss Stalin' (called that because of his legendary procrastination) who serves on the front line against his wishes, but he knows he can't stop her. her KFF is the shield like thing on her back that I tried to make look like Sputnik with some lasgun barrels from the chimera kit where I got the dome part.

moving on we have what may be a Spteznaz stormboy, or he may be something else with the Spetznaz being the kommandos, I'm not sure yet. either way the stormboys will have hats similar to this one, tanker hats.

and finally I have what I think may be the design for my big shootas. I still need to fill in the gap between the two gun parts, but I figured I would show you while I was showing you everything else.

also I have an assault gun made from a battle wagon that I couldn't get pictures of with my almost dead phone, so it needs to charge before I can get those. look for more updates soon.

Ok took a bit of a break from this to work on my cosplay for Origins, but now I've got some stuff to show you:

this is one of my tankbustas, a sapper engineer.

and here's another sapper, but this one is a burna boy. I'm not so sure about the gas mask on this one, I've since switched to the one on this guy:

this one is marked as an elite guard by his knitted sweater. he has a gas mask and in one hand he has a Molotov cocktail. I'll be using him as a slugga boy with stick bombs.

now how could I make a russian WW2 army and not include some of these guys? this one is a naval infantryman. this is going to be one of the many variants of basic troops I've planned to keep myself from getting bored with repetition.

also I've changed up what I'll be using for my big shootas. I decided instead to use maxim machine guns for my big shootas because it is easier for me to get the parts for.

and here's a Cossack biker. you will be able to tell who they are by their distinctive hats.

now I've got some vehicles to show you:

here's that assault gun I was talking about earlier. it's still got some work that needs to be done, but it's mostly done.

and here's another WIP, a mega dread based on an SSU walker from Dust. this one needs a lot more work than the assault gun, but I figured I would show you.

finally I have an example of the kind of trukks I will be using. they're based on the lend lease ford trucks from WW2.

that's all I've got right now, but I'll see if I can get any work done in between working on the cosplay.

Good luck with the green stuff any plans for using Tamiya based models rather than GW for the vehicles?

Not really, I play at a GW store, so I'd like to keep the entire army GW legal. Also it offers more of a challenge, which is just what I like.

I get the feeling you would like to make some Soviet orks of your own? Anything in specific you would like to know how I make so I can make some tutorials for you?

You should try to smooth your green stuff work, and ascend to god hood.

Yeah, use a finger dipped in water and just rub the surface of the GS. That'll be enough.

You could be a regular daemon gork.

yea I know there's a lot of fingerprints in the GS on the ones I've shown you. I've honestly noticed that my prototypes are often of worse quality than the ones I'm making in a production line method, and I know why: when I sit down to make the prototypes I make it in one sitting, and with so much GS covering the model I don't have much to grip onto. when I make the models in a production line I wait until one stage is dry before moving onto the next stage, meaning that there's more area to grip onto without leaving fingerprints.
also sorry I don't have any more stuff to show you, I've mostly been working on a necron lord cosplay, which is progressing along nicely.

Well proto-types and production lines aside, when you go to make something you should really slow down. You are showing signs of becoming a magnificent sculptor if you just slowed down a bit and smoothed your work.

well I don't know what happened there, but I sort of drifted away from 40k for a bit, but now I'm back after a brief stint at WM. anyways I'll get back on this and see if I can get some fluff posted tomorrow. today however I'm taking inventory of all my orks so that I know what I've got and what I need to order to get this army off the ground. wish me luck.

alright I think I found out what's been making this army such slow going for me: I've been looking at this like it was a full 2k point army instead of taking it in chunks. so I've decided that I'm going to divide this army up into parts so I can eat this elephant one bite at a time. expect to see some actual progress soon as I work towards my first 500 points.

Squad by Squad mob by mob is often the best way to go actually.

ok I just started some summer classes a few days ago, so I don't exactly have time to be making my own minis game right now. instead I'm getting back on this horse for the therapeutic benefits building an army seems to provide me. also I had to stop last time because my local sheet styrene supplier went out of business and my FLGS hasn't been able to get any good stock of the GF9 stuff in, so I had to put this project on hold. luckily I found this great supplier, perhaps you've heard of it, it's called the internet anyways I should be able to get back into a rhythm on this army as soon as I get some more sheet styrene in the mail. for now though I'm working on a box of nobz and a box of boyz, so expect some kind of progress soon.
