What's your opinion on something like this? Is it justified given the man's views or this something that is never excusable?

Not to cheapen the seriousness of the story, but when I first read the headline I thought they had misspelled Fremen.

What is a femen? Is it like a Fremen? Is it aware of the Mahdi?

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

It's a Ukrainian feminist group based in Kiev, they usually employ toplessness to draw attention to their protests.

Well given the fact that Venner advocated outrageous behavior as a means to protest his own cause, he doesnt get much sympathy from me. There is also the fact that he was probably suffering from a terminal illness so I dont really give him much credit for making a heroic sacrificial gesture.

His own protest of killing himself in the Cathedral over a ruling he didnt like is much more outrageous than some woman showing her boobs in public. She didnt actually hurt anyone and made the day less routine for some security personell and police.

His political views were very repugnant so good riddance to bad rubbish.

I'm not a fan of Vennen either it's just this Femen protested in probably the worst way possible that is if she wants to be taken seriously.

Maybe it was because she was waving around what looked like a gun in public. In Europe they have less of an issue overall with public nudity, it's in the US where people argue for a puritanical need to cover up all breasts but think it's fine to carry guns in public.

At least it was amusing. The horribly worded call to nazis to follow Venner's example made me laugh:

'immediately commit a suicide of their believes [sic] excluding themselves from the political arena in Europe'.

On the other hand, I suppose it worked in some bizarre way; I had no idea who Femen were until today.

I remember hearing about them on Russia Today once, but I didn't know that their influence reached this far into Western Europe until now.

Adding to the amusing side of it: Funnily enough even the cop on one of the pics appears to have a slight smirk on his face if you look closely.

Interesting how it was reported she wrote "fascists burn in hell" when she clearly wrote "rest in hell".

Well it's legal to be bare breasted in NYC now. Less puritanical everday

Waving the gun about as such would be considered a threatening manner stateside, 'brandishing' as it is known in some municipalities. That gets you arrested here as well

Really? Thats awsome. Of course like most situations like this, only the people that really should cover up will ever walk around topless.

Its just sad that something as asinine as committing suicide because the "gays" can marry is something that doesn't piss off.more.people. Mr Venner victimized the witness to his suicide for his own stupidity.

Absolutely justified, and he deserves much worse. Respect for the dead doesn't apply to s like him.

Even ignoring his repulsive political views he committed violent suicide in front of a crowd of innocent people. So no, I don't think he deserves any respect.

My gut reaction when first reading the story was to feel sickened at the idea of someone mocking someone else's death for whatever reason personally. < (at first anyway)

But the more I read about this Dominique Venner (hadn't heard of him until this,) the less sorry I feel for him. His whole 'final solution' thing that he implied in his writings is pretty disturbing to say the least. I think he tops the list of fruitcakes along with Fred Phelps given what I've found out about him.

Doesn't make much sense that he killed himself either given his supposed religious views, plus of all places to spill his own blood he does it in what's supposed to be a sacred place of worship. Pretty hypocritical of him if anything.

FEMEN are young students, protesting by being immense drama queens with naked boobs. I appreciate their protest (I mean, boobs!), but I consider them to be as serious as a toddler

Still, pretty sure she violated the law by doing that or needs psychological attention. or both

If anyone's interested by the way I have an alleged translation of his suicide note here:

"I am healthy in body and mind, and I am filled with love for my wife and children. I love life and expect nothing beyond, if not the perpetuation of my race and my mind. However, in the evening of my life, facing immense dangers to my French and European homeland, I feel the duty to act as long as I still have strength. I believe it necessary to sacrifice myself to break the lethargy that plagues us. I give up what life remains to me in order to protest and to found. I chose a highly symbolic place, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris, which I respect and admire: she was built by the genius of my ancestors on the site of cults still more ancient, recalling our immemorial origins.

While many men are slaves of their lives, my gesture embodies an ethic of will. I give myself over to death to awaken slumbering consciences. I rebel against fate. I protest against poisons of the soul and the desires of invasive individuals to destroy the anchors of our identity, including the family, the intimate basis of our multi-millennial civilization. While I defend the identity of all peoples in their homes, I also rebel against the crime of the replacement of our people.

The dominant discourse cannot leave behind its toxic ambiguities, and Europeans must bear the consequences. Lacking an identitarian religion to moor us, we share a common memory going back to Homer, a repository of all the values on which our future rebirth will be founded once we break with the metaphysics of the unlimited, the baleful source of all modern excesses.

I apologize in advance to anyone who will suffer due to my death, first and foremost to my wife, my children, and my grandchildren, as well as my friends and followers. But once the pain and shock fade, I do not doubt that they will understand the meaning of my gesture and transcend their sorrow with pride. I hope that they shall endure together. They will find in my recent writings intimations and explanations of my actions.

Note

For more information, one can go to my publisher, Pierre-Guillaume Roux. He was not informed of my decision, but he has known me a long time."

I don't agree with much of what the Femen stand for, but they're at least on the right side this time. Vennen was a bigot who spent his last breath to advance a hateful cause. Good riddance.

Good Daily Mail journalism, even with the picture they can't get what she wrote across her torso correct...

This guy Venner just sounds like a nutfeth. He says he "doesn't expect anything beyond" but then talks about "poisons of the soul"...

If gay people getting married is that toxic to your existence it's probably better that you're dead. Not agreeing with it is one thing, but killing yourself because of it?

I'd guess that there is also a typical foreigner angle in that "speech".

Put her under the jail as a warning to others. There's been a lot of protests in church. Enough. Make a statement.

Alternatively just drop her off as she is in the immigrant areas of Paris. Should be interesting.

No its not.
She can protest outside. She can't cause a scene in the chuirch itself.

Fraz, what's wrong with protesting in a Church?

It might be uncouth to cause a scene in a place of worship, but it shouldn't be illegal.
