So I wanted to have a minimum requirement of terrain like a forest and some walls to have the option to play Warmachine independently of others.

So where can one get such a green wonderfull mat? They turn a boring table into a good looking battlefield! Easy to transport, deploy and pack together.

The Games Workshop grass mat is actually one of their better priced products, for 33 USD you get a 4x6 mat that rolls up nicely for storage. I use it for Warmachine/Hordes, Malifaux, 40k, fantasy, and it's been an awesome investment.

Here is me using it at home during a 75 point match. Well it was pre-match bragging as my friend then replied with this:

Oh if they had discontinued it look around at independent stockists. They usually keep some stock that has been discontinued, it was a popular product, they are usually common at wargaming convetions there is usually one or two hanging about. Its also machine washable aswell and it doesnt have flock that comes off. (god, im starting to sound like a GW employee! )

Haha! I even posted in that thread, I believe though that someone said it was out of stock, not production.

Woodland Scenics has grass mats available in various sizes and colors. Having been designed more for model railroad layouts than wargaming, though, they shed a bit more than some people would like under heavy use. There are other options, as well, from plain or printed felt to textured rubber mats like Zuzzy's offerings, all of which can be rolled or folded up for storage and transport.

I would second the woodland scenics grass mat. you could spray it with a matte sealer to try to avoid some shedding. alternately you could get a heavy canvas painters drop cloth and paint one side green. that might be a very low cost diy method.

I would *not* second the grass mat. It will not tolerate being rolled up and rolled out a lot. Better to check with a fabric shop or a pool hall for large pieces of cloth.

The woodland scenics one is meant to be glued in place and left alone. It's not suitable at all for transport or even being put away.

If you're in Europe, I'd go with Terrain Mat:

Unfortunately, high demand has put them 7 weeks behind in production, so expect a couple month delay.

1.) GW was fine, but is taken from most GW websites (maybe with exception of Australia still having a few).
2.) Model Railroad mats are perfect ... if you glue trees and miniatures on it and don't touch it again. They are not made to move regiments over it, as they are not abrasion proof. And being glued on paper, they are not very sturdy or transport friendly.
3.) There are a few solutions made for tabletop gamers, e.g. Zuzzy mat. Personally I prefer felt mats by Hotz Mats, esp. European Fields for fantasy/grass settings:

I've had my GW mat for over 10 years and its still going strong. I don't roll it but peg it to the surface of a table with fold up legs that gets laid on its side against a garage wall when not in use. Apart from a couple of coke stains from spilt drinks its still in great shape.

Terrain Mat was quite costly!

50£ for a 4x4 mat + 45£ shipping.

Hotz Matz seems like a good alternative, but unforutnately no photos of their products :(

My local GW still has several in stock. This thread actually reminded me that I was thinking about picking one up.

My LGS has several in stock still, and I think I remember seeing more come in last Friday I was there. So yes, definitely not discontinued, and it's the best product that I've ever bought from GW.

Erm ... I just posted one.
Just go to the shop link I posted, then click the mat you are interested in, then click "photo gallery".

I ended up going with a flannel sheet from walmart. Not quite as pretty as a flocked mat, but it was like $7.

Green table clothes with a sponged on coat of alternate green shades will do the trick nicely and costs less than $20 USD.

Once you have the green paint, you can make a lot of the matts, or use it on other terrain projects.

Thanks, dunno how I managed to miss that. Their web layout was somewhat unconventional though.

My friend actually had pretty good luck with Tye Dye pattern fleece fabric from a fabric store.

Nope, it's two different fabrics purcased by the yard at a fabric shop. I don't know exactly, but he said it was quite inexpensive. If I didn't alraedy have some nice wool army blankets I'd probably buy some myself.

Yeah, black fabric with sparklies on it makes great spacescapes for Battlefleet Gothic (Can I still say the name of that game?), X-wing, and other space games.

Typically it is $3-5 a yard, so less than $20 USD.

Easy to store and transport too.

If you want desert, here one of Hotz versions (also available without craters or in moon-grey):

Felt has the advantage relative to cloth, that rolling dice and moving miniatures is more comfortable.

Both of those fabrics are 50x100 inches, and together cost around $30.

I have two Hotz mats, a space one and a desert one and can hearitly recommend them. For my green mat, I bought a large roll from Modelzone as they were having a sale and that is adequate enough for my needs.
