What's your thoughts on this?
I personally find it ridiculous how people view you as 'lesser' for swearing. The only reason why I don't like the idea of a 'swear word' is that society could turn any word they wanted into one.
Does swearing make you dumb? Unable to use better words?

Per the late, great George Carlin, there are no bad words, only bad thoughts.

Also, thanks to Star Trek IV, I like to think of them as "colorful metaphors."

It all depends on context. Where I come from, even C U Next Tuesday is not a serious swear word, and people swear all the time.

/when I moved to England, I quickly learned that things were different, and even things as mild as bollocks could be swear words to people here.

So, now I don't swear unless I'm really annoyed or pretty sure it;ll be accepted as a comedic punchline to what I'm saying.

Swear words are bad because people think they are, not because they have any intrinsic negative value. They are merely words much like any other word. The idea a certain collection of sounds is taboo to our society strikes me as being immensely stupid.

Out of respect for some of my older relatives set in their ways I will hold my tongue, but outside of that I have no reservations about using them to further enrich whatever subject matter I'm trying to converse with someone about.

If you can't relate an idea without them, yes.

It's also painfully obvious when they are used as a proxy for actual humor, or as a crass attempt to be edgy.

I use "Oh my god", Jesus and gak and other swear words. I dont get it how words that are used interchangebly are bad. Like is i yellled "Ah Crud" in public, nothing will be worng But if i changed it to gak suddenly its wrong to say it? Aslong as it isnt directed to someone, it is fine IMO

Surprisingly, the internet mellowed me out. The otacool communities aren't big on swearing.

I'm very polite and normal-ish, until I get excited about something, and then every other word is the f-word.

They are different because society has arbitrarily determined they are different.

You may not perceive them as being different, but that doesn't mean everyone else should just accept that.

People that swear in a vain attempt to be cool or appear tough are really pathetic. Also those who swear just in normal conversation. Those who add "feth"/"fething" to the front of every noun and verb. You really just make yourself look stupid.

Save the profanity for when it would be "appropriate".

Some of my favourite words are profanities. There's no word in the English language that's as versatile as "feth."

It always amuses me when people say that the use of profanity is evident of a small vocabulary. I tend to be the most pretentiously magniloquent person in most situations I'm involved in, and am usually regarded as a strong speaker, despite my tendency to also be the most profane.

witch is probably my favourite word at this point I just love how harsh, blunt and powerful it sounds at least on an aesthetic level, although I don't use the word much.

Oh, I should say I love how ugly the word witch sounds as well it really shouldn't mean vagina (vagina's are little pretty things it doesn't make sense to me to give them a harsh sounding name) but the word is rarely used in that context and more as an insult so I suppose it doesn't matter too

much.

Something I've noticed about swear words is that they are incredibly versatile. Feth can be a verb, adverb, adjective, a noun and so on.

I think the reason why swear words are taboo is because they relate to something we like to shy away from. The reason one thing might not be so bad in one culture is terrible in another is because they treat the related subject matter different.

For example, feth relates to sex and gak relates to excrement, things Western Society is uncomfortable with talking about. Maybe the reason they are censored is because they are direct and harsh words that can't be softened or used for something else.

I rarely ever swear. when I do swear people know I'm thoroughly angered. The art of conveying anger or insult is quite boring when you use the same five words.

I went to military school in middle school, spent my high school years in a crappy public school, and work as a stagehand. I hear horrible profanity on a daily basis. I use it quite a bit if I'm in an area where its not a big deal, like at work (where even the boss will use profanity quite a bit) but if I'm in an area where its taboo I try and avoid it.

As far as I'm concerned, they're useful words just like any other, less taboo word. They just carry more weight and can get a point across much faster.

For example, if my boss says "grab that cable" I know he needs it, but its not an urgent matter. But if he says "grab that fething cable" I better drop what I'm doing and get it right away. Its not even like he's mad, that's just him stressing that he needs it.

I get some people don't like it but it doesn't bother me. Time and a place and all that.

People often say they like to swear because of the fact that many swear words have a multitude of meanings. That's just it. The thing with swear words is that people use them when they don't know how to properly express themselves. Their thoughts are not properly developed and so they need to swear to try to convey what the could not think about how to say properly.

Ultimately, this is likely going to encourage users to circumvent the swear filter to express their views--and we have likely discussed this as much as it warrants.
