I had an eye on the Sslyth too, but I didn't have a proper conversion idea to justify the purchase yet... maybe a good thing, too much lying around already.

Baiyuan - Is this a better teaser?

I need to neaten up the lettering on the parchment "Dues Imperat Vult" (I wish I hadn't battle damaged the parchment in the middle now. I'll also be adding extra highlights to the shield once it is glued and pinned into place. The Crusader's name is Galvinra Virarchy

neil - I'll never be as bad as Baiyuan. JRN has now finished his Daemon Host. I love the colour of the armour. The Slyth is a lovely model that will get dragged onto my modelling bench if I ever get round to a radical ordo xenos inquisitor or perhaps a fantasy slannesh lord. It will be worth the wait until sunday....though if you are allowed to play with it before tuesday I'd be surprised!

Merry Christmas Guys

Lovely Gold matey , recipe please..

here is one i got from from Giraffex for this lovely concoction

Spoiler:

For the gold I'll be doing it as follows all vallejo paints

Black undercoat
Charred Brown base coat (on this test I painted over a Khorne dark red pad)
Then its a case of wet blending from the bottom of the pad starting with Tinny Tin > Polished Gold > Silver and finishing with Liquid Gold

oh and Tuesday sounds about right

Yeah that's better Peter.
The gold is very good so far and an additional highlight can only make it even better.
The lettering looks a bit scrawly, but you said so yourself. Also if you don't like it, just put some gs in that hole in the parchment and simply paint it over again, shouldn't take you more than 5 min.
Still looking forward...

I think I should have left him over night before taking photos after the purity seal...tad shiny.

Really rather happy with how he has turned out., especially the fire dragon crimson robe (thanks Jakob) and the shield. I think I could have spent a little longer on the parchment text but overall I think it gives the right effect. He looks good standing next to the brute but you'll have to wait for the warband to be finished before you get the money shot.

The mutie killer is undercoated and I'm looking at him and thinking...."Why the hell did I put that many skulls on his back?" Oh well better get on with him otherwise he won't be finished by mid Jan. After he is done I'm going to be starting my priest and his factotum. I'll be using the FW Nurgle Priest as a base for my priest...I'll be removing the head, arms, belly, staff. Then I'll be adding a fur shawl, a new chest and belly (GS robes) and arms holding a baptismal mace. I'm really looking forward to the priest.

Capitansolstice - Cheers, hope you had a good Christmas.

neil101 - Hi mate the recipe goes a little something like this: Base coat tin bitz, dry brush a mix of tin bits and shining gold, wash with dev mud, wash with griffin sepia. Highlight a few more times with the tin and gold mix adding more gold. A very thin purple wash part way through the highlights. Highlight with Burnished Gold and then a final highlight of Mythril Silver.

Giraffex's gold looks rather good colour wise, very polished, but a little rough.

Baiyuan - Even the redone lettering looks a little scrawly...but I'm pretty sure the Imperium employs 5 year olds as scribes! Very happy with the gold on the shield and the bright skull.

l33tninj4 - Thanks. Ah but they do...you just need to find the bits and combine them...its part of the fun

Holy crap that's gorgeous. I love the contrast in materials on him. Having him wearing such fine-crafted armor, but with a wooden panel strapped to his back has such a charming, grimdark feel to it. You've really captured the essence of this model. The face is great too. I've been looking for a way to use those Chaos Warrior heads for a while now, and I might piggyback off your idea. The skin tone you've achieved is great. Mind sharing your recipe?

Dex - Thank you very much. The wood and metal seems just crazy enough for the Imperium. As for the skin recipe...hmmmm I wish I could remember it like the gold, I forgot to write it down. But it was a base of Tallern Flesh and a Deneb Stone. Wash of Ogryn Flesh and then highlight adding using various Vallejo flesh colours. Definitely used a purple wash round the eye sockets. Sorry dude.

Neil - Cheers man. God Emperor Wills....it just seemed right. The thing I really like about the model is how most of it is hidden behind that shield.

Before I start the usual nitpicking (tell me if you don't care about it and I'll keep it to myself) I have to say it's another lovely paintjob!
While you're painting skills are clearly above average, for me the special thing about your painting is that you always achieve a certain harmony, that is quite unique. It's hard to describe, but your miniatures give an authentic and complete impression. That being said, let's move on to a more detailed analysis.

Strong points:
The color and blending on the robe is very good.
The head looks fantastic, no overexaggerated shadows, still enough depth, visible eyes without comic look etc.
The metals have just the right amount of everything, not to dirty, not to clean, slightly damaged, enough highlight etc.

Weak points:
The chest piece is boring and the paintjob doesn't do the sculpt justice. Considering that you had planned to use it for quite a long time I had expected you'd make it stand out a little bit. I can appreciate that you saved the gold for the shield, but a brighter highlight or ornaments in a different color would have looked better imo.
The parchment is pretty bland imo. I don't mind the scrawly lettering, that has some charme, but I would have liked the parchment with a little more light and shadow, neither is really there I think.
The shade of the wax seals is slightly distracting for me, but I know you were especially happy with it, so it's probably a matter of taste I would have gone for a different hue.

3 vs. 3 and the downsides are just an attempt at constructive criticism where none is really due. I'm looking forward to your mutie.

Baiyuan - No mate please continue sharing your thoughts and comments

The chest piece is perfect imo, I wanted it to be totally understated. Perhaps a little more mythril silver on the chest skulls is needed, as it has lost a bit of shine when the purity seal went on.

The parchment is a little bland in yours and Jakob's opinion. I'll probably go back and dirty it up a bit and a add few more shadows.

The wax seals are not actually that colour...not exactly anyway. Everything else has come out nicely but the red looks a little peachy in the pictures.

Commander Cain - Cheers. I actually need to ask you a favour...how did you paint your commissar's white cloak? I like the contrast of the black and white:

Spoiler:

Rogue Wolves - Thanks. See B's response about the chest and parchment.

Capitansolstice - Thank you

I may be an echo....

But....

The head - skin tones, wispy greying shaved hair effect - spot on. The battered shield and worn chestplate? Perfect.

The parchment? Not so - for reasons already stated. There doesn't seem to be any depth in it.

And now I need to go back to that Farseer of mine....

Blood red does that IMO if you don't first basecoat it with red gore first for some reason. I think GW changed their formula for Blood red at some point, it seemed to have better pigment back in the day. You might try a final highlight of blazing orange to bring the red out.

I think I'd agree. Its all torn and tattered, but still very white. Seems just a bit off on an otherwise perfect model.

Hmm, let me see, I believe I started with an Adeptus Battlegrey basecoat then blended some Fortress grey into every part of the cloak except the deepest recesses. I then did the same with Skull white. The trick was piles of thinned down layers, building the colours (shades) up nice and slowly. It was made quite simple as the cloak already has very deep areas, if the area I am painting is flatter, I tend to make my own shadows on it to make it pop out more. Hope this helps!

Do you blend the fortress grey into the wet adeptus battlegrey?

Commander Cain - Thank you, you might just have helped with the two models for the warband.

dsteingass - Thanks for asking for the clarification, would have thought of that. The blood red looks fine in real life...just a bit peachy in the photos.

Tortured-Robot - Cheers

DarkStarSabre, whalemusic360 and everyone else who wasn't sold on the parchment - I've added a bit more paint and wash to them all. Black stipple and dry brush to the ends. Random stains using Griffin Sepia and a lovely mix of Baal Red and Thakka Green (you should try it). Tried to add a bit of shading using Dev Mud and a tiny about of black. Then dry brushed as carefully as possible white over them all. Finally tried highlighting the raised points to add more contrast.

Thanks for pushing me to make it a better.

Dex - I will do new pictures soon. I need to redo a little of the text. The green and red comes out a lovely purple brown. It is even more interesting if you mix it together wet on the model.
