Subject: Ork Deff Dreads: Thoughts?

I'm in the process of 'looting' my Black Reach SM Dreadnoughts into Deff Dreads just because I'm A: That bored/into modeling and kitbashing and B: Getting out of playing Space Marines altogether (selling my Marines tomorrow to another player at my FLGS). So I'm wondering how these guys stack up using them as Heavy Support choices? I typically run Big Gunz and/or Looted Wagons as HS. I've used Battlewagons before. So I'm curious as to how the Deff Dreads stand up to the other HS choices in the Ork codex. Disclaimer; I don't even consider using Flash Gitz just because they're so ungodly expensive for Ork Infantry.

In my experience they're more hit or miss. I've had them ruin multiple units per game or just get blown up turn one.
Personally, I recommend Killa Kans. You get three instead of one for about 40 points more, and there's six hull points instead of three to go through. You can also equip these guys in a hybrid shooting/close combat role using grotzookas for infantry or three rockets for some decent ranged anti-tank.
If you're dead set on using a dread, there's some things to keep in mind. For equipment, I recommend either all close combat weapons or maybe one close combat and a flamer.
This is because he only has BS 2, so most of his shots miss, and he should be running every turn as he is a slower option. (And who doesn't want six S10 AP2 attacks on the charge?)
One last thing to keep in mind is how you plan on using them. If you charge from the front, even with a KFF, you will most likely get blown up early. They are good late game, used for either a counter attack or slowly trudging up behind the boyz and helping out with any unit that's in trouble.
Almost forgot to mention one of his best aspects is that he can get in that troop slot with a big mek, keeping you from narrowing your choices of HS.

More like 'utilizing what I got' as opposed to being dead set on using something. I don't have any Killa Kan models yet, unfortunately. They're on my to buy list after another box of boyz, maybe another trukk or battlewagon, and some more Bikers.
I forgot about the Big Meks allowing them to be taken as Troops. I use a Big Mek w/ SAG almost every game, so that'd be beneficial.
Thanks for the tips!

I've only used mine in one game so far but he did great. He put a glancing hull point on the stormtalon and drew all of it's fire for 3 turns.
That may have been more of a problem from the other players prioritizing but he was sitting on an objective and he knew that his tac squad wouldnt survive a close combat with it.
He died on that 3rd turn, but that was 3 turns I didnt have to worry about the stormtalon. I killed the stormtalon with my lootas on the 4th turn.

ive been trying to think of ways to use him, but its either hope to god theres a lot of terrain for him to hide behind as he walks up for 4 turns or just have him camp out of sight waiting for something to try and take out your lootas/kannon batteries.
I have a very awesome (and freaky looking) giant ork model i converted out of a hellbrute. i never use it because deffdreads suck so much lol. I also have 2 deffdreads and 2 killakan boxes unopened i got from an ebay deal. Reluctant to throw them away because i cant shake this feeling they might be useful again in the new codex. If not, least i got a ton of bitz to use!

If you run a Big Mek for Each Big Mek you can run a Deffdread as a Troop Choice ..leaving the Heavy slot open for Big Gunz to support ..
I like dreads with the following load out 2 x Skorcha.. Run them up with a mob of boyz sheilding them and move them up if they run into something ..BTW Kanz are an Easy conversion build from ..empty plastic GW painbottles a tiny bit of plasticard one grot ..and buy or make the CCW, and Grotzooka or Rokkit to arm them with
Con for Kanz ..they pop to heavy bolter fire or krak grenandes.. on the front ..DeffDreads do not pop as easy....takes a stronger weapon to pop it from the front..

Deff Dreads are rubbish.
Luckily though, they'll work just fine in Zone Mortalis. But that seems to go for almost every unit that sucks in standard 40k

If you havent sold them the Termies from black reach are a simple to convert into Either Meganobz..or Killa Kanz..(just make sure to magnatize the weapon arm and an Ork head and voila they are good as both) with the addition of some pistons and extra plates and smoke stacks ..Grot head for Kan ..Ork Nob Head with Metal GOb for Meganobz..DCCW can count as the PK easy enough or a PK as a DCCW ..Weapon arm can be magnetized to swap between ..Twin linked Shoota , Combi Weapon .. or ..Grotzooka easy enough ..

also had a try inn with them with the new apoc book with a big bunch of dreads and killa kanz... ended up tossing a six giving them all the uppgrades Oh man.. it was a slaughter xD

Hm, I'm going to need to remember that trick with the paint bottles for the Killa Kans. That's a great idea! (puts that down for future kitbash project).
Unfortunately, I've already sold the Termies from Black Reach. I'm using the cash from that sale tonight to buy a new DakkaJet (I'm going to put nose/tail art on this one!). No MANZ for me just yet...
Thanks for all the awesome feedback on this guys! Either way, whether I use them or not, I'll still be sure to post my kitbash/conversion pics up on my profile since that's one of the reason why I love the orks!

If I take a Big Mek, I usually field them as a troop choice - instead of using Heavy Support.
They are a great target, they are fairly cheap (85 points that you can choose between Big Shootas and Skorchas). It forces your opponent to shot at it, because if allowed to get into melee, they become very difficult to kill and they have 3 attacks they are all str 10 ap 2. If the additional CC weapon gave 2 more attacks instead of one, I'd outfit them with 2.
Like the Killa Kan, I believe Big Gunz or battlewagons are the better choice of HS. Taking up a Troop spot is the reason I would take a Def Dread over a Killakan squad.
I would love to see the conversion of a Dreadnaught to a Def Dread.

3-6 tanks, one can be a kommanda and gets an extra gun plus the ability to re-roll the movement dice. Take them as Fast in a Dread Mob or as Elites in a Vanilla list that also contains a Big Mek.
These things look easy as hell to build, I just never got around to it because of uni stuff.

Just curious, has anyone tried bringing a full set of dreads, as in three heavy support and two troops? At least one or two of them should make it into the red zone.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

I would actually like to see this. I just made up a quick 2000 point list based on this idea. what do you think? I came out with 9 points left so i just stuck ammo runts in there to fill the gaps.
HQ
MA Warboss, bp, ammo runt
MA Warboss, bp, ammo runt
Big Mek, KFF, ‘eavy, cybork, ammo runt
Elite
10 lootas
10 lootas
Troops
9 MANZ in BW w/ Deffrolla
9 MANZ in BW w/ Deffrolla
11 boyz, big shoota in truck w/ ram
Deff Dread
Heavy
Deff Dread
Deff Dread
Deff Dread
So this list comes to 2000 exactly but the deff dreads are only upgraded with either big shoota or skorcha. I mean, if we dropped some of the lootas we could get some more in the heavy slot because of dual FoC

Yeah I dont think many people would expect to face 20 MANZ and 4 AV12 walkers.
Or if they know they are playing orks, they may prepare to face horde infantry, and this list brings nothing but armor.

i've had success with dreads, even had one with a rokkit bring down a stormraven the turn it arrived, then assault the death-company dread that fell out and lost an arm, and krumped that! but that was just luck.
generally, they are good if you keep 'em cheap and walk them towards the enemy with a KFF covering them, and have some less-intimidating more dangerous units approaching, like looted wagons with tankbustas in 'em (yeah, that's right, i use looted wagons for transports). the dread will draw the fire for looking big and scary, and then the more dangerous units can make it into range and start unleashing hell.

I think the Deff Dread is a decent close combat walker, the only thing holding it back is that it lacks any kind of transportaton method. If you could teleport (deepstrike) it by itself, or stick it in a drop pod type landing craft, it could be used much more aggressively, forcing the opponent to deal with it right away or take a huge amount of damage to one of his units. As it is right now, it can be dealt with later, because most of the time, it doesn't arrive with the rest of the army because it's so slow, and can even be stunned or immobilized.
