As some of you now know, i will be hosting a painting competition very shortly. Its been discussed on Damos blog, but i created this topic simply for questions and discussion about the upcoming plog and to move the conversation onto this topic and off damos blog. THE OFFICIAL COMPETITION FORUM LINK WILL POSTED INTO PAINTING AND MODELLING.

The Competition. Bebops Painting challenge. The Guardsman.
The point of this competition is to present entering artists with a unique challenge: To paint up the most basic of minis to the highest standard possible. In this case: The lowly, basic guardsman. How much personality can you give to a model with just your brush and your imagination??
Often times, we gravitate towards cluttered and detail oriented minis because when painted, the amount of detail alone is truely impressive. But can we achieve as impressive a response with a mini that has little to no detail at all?
On top of this restriction, each contestant must paint the same model, a standard Cadian Guardsman with a las gun. Converting/Kitbashing is absolutely not allowed and the only modelling available to you is for the models base, which is a standard 28mm round. There will be further details and restrictions regarding this issue as the other judges and I confer ( so far whalemusic and myself. the 3rd spot is still open). The current rules are read as this:
1 Cadian trooper built from the Box.
MUST have lasgun
NO extra wargear allowed
MUST be on 28mm round
MUST add Pouches to backside
and MUST as closely as possible resemble this build (NOT my work):

ANY EXTRA DETAIL/POSE WILL GIVE YOU ADVANTAGE AND WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AS A VALID ENTRY. Its crucial that each contestants mini is as close to identical as possible (This is an issue only because the plastic snap together cadian is difficult to find, which, otherwise would be the required mini to paint)
YOU MAY ENTER UP TO 3 MODELS (But as this will be graded on sheer painting execution, youd do well to focus on less
While this may sound restricting...remember, that necessity is the mother of invention. The standard Cadian has everything you need to make for an incredible paint. Skin, Hard armors, Cloth, dynamic surfaces, OSL options, NMM....the world is your oyster...through your brush.

The judging will focus on how far youve pshed your own abilities, chances taken...time spent, execution of techniques (wetblending, feathering etc etc) if any freehand detail, and of course color choices...etc etc. In the end, how much personality can you give to the lowest of the low??
The final scoring rubric will be posted to the official link.

As for prizes, Thats not quite official either: IM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS. But they will be at worst (read: least creative) cash prizes, to more trophy like prizes such as models painted by me. which is what im leaning towards.
AND If you are concerned that your painting skills arent up to snuff to snag an award, have no fear. There will be a Best Color scheme award, picked by the public. The winner of that will recieve a guardsman in their scheme painted by me. That is for sure.
So far these are the things weve got pretty solid.

Please field any questions, comments, suggestions here and expect this competition to begin somewhere in the window of two weeks!

Cheers guys, spread the word, and take the challenge!! Bring your a game and your eye for color and lets see what yall come up with when working on the same project!!

Hey buddy, i figured i had dropped into your back log which i know is epicly long No worries, there are pics waiting for you on my kroots whenever you are ready hehe

And YES YES YES. There are NO restrictions regarding painting. You are most definitely encouraged to come up with your own color schemes and any freehanded details are also encouraged! Those will score you points. Id imagine copying too close the standard scheme will cost you points in originality. Again the rubric isnt set in stone yet.And dont forget about the color scheme award!

ok...this is now settled then then count me in officially...whenever you start this comp for real

i don´t own the snap and click guardsmen...but i will be able to get the basic trooper build like that for sure... bitzbox is overflowing^^ also...statdard head is also a must? or do we may take liberties here? i would understand if you keep strict on this too!

No liberties vik, the models must be exactly the same... In terms of sculpt. Basic helmeted head It says it on the OP.
Once youve got your build then you can do whatever you want. And i will allow modelling for the base, but only organics...ie earth, water, snow, mud, grass, urban, steel mesh etc etc etc. i think like a 2mm rule or something like that..

Is urban and steel mesh really "organics"?

Lol, yeah i see your point OK. FLOOR. lol.
Basically, the bases can be pretty extravagant but it must fit on a 28mm round.
i havent a set rule for that yet. But i think as long as its not too much of another structure (ie your mini standing on a massive peice of ruined tank is a bit unfair as it gives you more room for possibility)
Thats why i think 2mm height rule is a bit more defined but yet open ended enough to give your mini a proper and delicious environment! And of course you can add all the fake plants you want

OH-I Wanna get out of here

We could just limit the possible amount of points for the base. Would give you the option of doing as much crap as you want, maxing out the same as someone who made a nice but basic base.

I'm looking forward to entering this contest as I don't normally post anything I paint online. I have a suggestion or two for you to consider before you open the contest officially.

1. Post a picture of the unpainted plastic guardsman front and back that everyone is to use. I know that we are allowed to build ours from the plastic Cadian kit and that they should all look the same and have pouches on the back. Posting unpainted pics of the example will help eliminate many questions about alternate heads, pouches, etc.

2. Have everyone pm you a pic of their entry before they start painting it. This will eliminate any problems with questionable basing, posing, extras, etc. The playing field will be leveled before the game even begins and you will be able to ensure that there won't be problems with people's entries the day before the deadline.

Keen for this! Thanks for the opportunity man.

@ whale. That's a good idea. I definitely want to allow alot of creative freedom with the base as it helps identify who the guy is, but I want to avoid people from spending all their time on it in exclusion to the painting. Limiting the points earned for it is a good plan.

@ephrael: definitely. Was going to state that on the official. The entries will need to be ok'd before being posted and ill put up a pic of the build as well. And, if you have the plastic snap together, that's preferable. Not sure how easy they are to get nowadays...
Saw your art and I can't wait to see what you do with brush and paint!!

@LDP. alright, LDP, definitely happy you are going to be involved in this!

Looks like this hopefully will shape up to be an inspired challenge.
I'd like to say too, the more I think of it, to give points for challenge and trying new things. I'm hoping to see many wip pics of artists trying out new techniques and sharing their progress on the comp blog. I imagine we are all going to learn a great deal from each other!!

Also: just another mention of it. We still need a third judge. PM me if you're interested.
And again, prizes. suggestions? The only set in stone priZe is the color scheme champ, a model in the winners scheme painted by me. The other 3 are up for discussion but I'm leaning towards personalized trophy like gifts as well. Akin to nerds comp
Cheers!!
BB

Also need a 3rd judge still >_< !!

And anyone know how to make a cool little banner like our league of extraordinary riveters banner as competition badges? It'd be a nice little extra on top of physical awards for the winners (gold, silver, bronze)

PM me for judge/banner

What a great idea for a comp, I won't put my name in the hat just yet, really to concentrate on finishing the two other comps that I'm in first (namely the League Terrain compo and then The Junk pile compo). IF I get done with those then I'll certainly be tempted to join in Bebop

Cam, no laughs about it. Even if you dont think you'll place, 1-3, theres still the best color scheme award voted by the community, not the judges.
Either way, youll do great Your latest work is really taking off!

I'm more of a converter than a fancy painter, but I actually just happened to assemble the one pretty-normal Cadian in my entire Catachan army. The only difference is that he has Catachan legs instead of Cadian. Will this be all right?

Hey man, it is with great respect that i must decline your request:(:( Its pretty much the only rule set in stone that the models need to be identical. Thats part of the "challenge" so to say. How will it affect the artists work when hes challenged to paint the same thing as the next guy.
If you decide to just piece a regular dude together itd be great to have you Youre a fantastic painter!

My Post seems to have disappeared. Unfortunately I'm more of a converter than a painter, and as I don't have any guardsmen to paint I'm afrai I'm going to let this one pass me by. I will continue to watch in awe of everyone elses skills though.
