With rumors about warhammer 40k 7th edition already floating out there. I just got to wondering: who would you like to see in the new starter set? While one of the armies is usually some flavor of space marines, for the sake of this discussion lets assume that isn't the case.

Personally: I think it would be cool to see a Tau Vs Tyrnids.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

I think it'll be Space Marines vs Tau or Eldar. Probably Iron Hands (if they go specific... otherwise vanilla) vs Tau.
Personally I'd like it to be Tau vs Space Marines - purely because so many new players play marines and they're really the people who need the starter sets. Also vanilla, because tailoring like they did for the last one sucks for all the other Marine players. Either that or Eldar vs Tyranids (this depends on how the new dex goes next month...)

EDIT: (yeah I play Tau)

I'm not a fan ofthe chapter specific models when they do marines. Not a big deal to me as I just paint them in my colors and mix and match anyway, but I can see that turning a lot of players off from buying the starter set. For example, a blood angels player might not be so keen to buy the current ones as the models are kind useless to them without a lot of work removing the icongraphy. When they put in the "generic' marines This does not mean dont put on details of course, you find that they sell better and help the hobby as a whole.

Are there really rumors about 7th edition already? o_O

Anyway, I'd be more interested in actually discounted army-specific bundles than the thematic kits(Dark Vengeance, Assault on Black Reach).

Stop making specific models in the sets and instead add customization. And lots of loadouts. Dark Vengeance looks great, but I decided to pass on it to start out in the W40K hobby for the loadouts being crap and it being a pain to customize anything without extensive use of a knife and greenstuff.

They are meant for begginers who dont know even how to play yet, and you want them to freaking customize?!

God people, we need SOME sort of viable entry point for this hobby.

Anyway, next starter?
Starters are usually "Marine X VS xeno/chaos menace"
For marines I'd like to nominate blood angels or space wovles.
For the menace, how about necrons?

I would love to see Sisters vs. Chaos

But Iron Hands vs Tau would be cool.

I like this suggestion.

But I do agree, that you don't want to give brand new players too many customization options, because ultimately they are going to do what looks cool in the first place. or they'll end up with 6 guys with melta guns in a squad and no realize thats not allowed.

I'm selfish. If one of the armies is one I collect, I'm happy.

Though we all know it'll never happen, I'd also like to see a huge lack of space marines, or anything in power armour for that matter. 40k has far too many space marines.

As someone who got into 40k via Dark Vengeance I'd have to say that it doesn't matter what armies come in the starter set, the lists have to be balanced!

What was going on with the DV set anyways? Dark Angels weighing in at like 800 points, while the poor Crimson Laughter (not a typo!) were something like 600? That really turned me off of that set. Even going back to it after learning how to play, it was still so unbalanced!

If the idea with the starter set is to get people to buy more Space Marines then I guess that's fine.

But they should do a combo that they haven't done yet, we know it will be Space Marines though, Blood Angels maybe? By all logic it will be two armies that have new codices. So Space Marines, ha!

I would like to see Space Marines vs Eldar!

But really anything as long as the two armies are designed equally...

Gets along better with animals... Go figure.

This is a really good point actually. At the very least, include some scenarios (à la Battle for Macragge) that balances out the forces.

to be honest, just as i would buy one (or more) starter sets with sisters, I would likely do the same for one with a new (or classic) guard set. A clasic one would see a boost in sales for the clasic models for whatever weapons and options werent in the starter set.

I'm starting the hobby but I actually know what I want and how to build it. Beginners aren't mentally slowed FYI as some people seem to believe. The reason why I passed on getting Dark Vengeance was DUE to it being so basic with the stupid snap fit system that prevents me from making something that will stand out without buying stock in greenstuff. Instead I'm buying the fairly nice deal of the CSM bsi battleforce (one ten man squad of CSM's, Rhino, bikers, and possessed) and a squad of Raptors so I can make counts-as-shrike if I ever decide to play them competitively under Raven Guard rules.
(Not to mention DV really isn't all that 'basic' anyway with how advanced the CSM Chosen models are that makes it an oddly poor thing to chose to start out with unless you're a rad painter but want to get stiff models that can't be specially posed or modded without greenstuff. It's really quite odd compared to older sets.)

I just hope the next starter will have unique models that are either standard glue/melt together or snap fit but with multiple different sets of limbs with carried weapons.
