We know it'll be Marines vs some non-Imperial army, but it still fun to imagine what could be.

I know this would never happen but a really cool themed starter should be Sisters vs Necrons. It could the battle of Sanctuary 101.
How cool would that be?

here is hoping that they learn from this past mistake ando a generic or vanilla marine set instead of one with molded on iconography of a particuler chapter.

As much retro-awesomness as that would be, I don't think it would make a good starter set. If you look at the AoBR and DV boxes they are packing a much larger variety of stuff in there these days.
2nd was SM vs. Orks
3rd was SM vs. DE
4th was SM vs. Nids
5th was SM vs. Orks
6th is DA vs. CSM
I think it's time for Necrons to be in the starter myself. Them and demons are the only evil armies not to show up in a box yet. I would prefer unflavored marine models, but I suspect there is going to be iconography on whatever marines are in the box.

I expect it to be a Revenant Titan and a Warhound and cost you nearly $800 to buy. Also, there will be no other access to the rulebook for a full year except a $200 digital release that gives you 'rules' to use existing Revenants and Warhounds.
-=Cough=-
I'd love to see Imperial Guard and a Xenos just as some variety from the last four having Marines....GW seems to like the idea of changing the dynamic and wanting people to support new armies, and putting Guard/Xenos in would give new options for armies people don't already play.

In an ideal world there would be multiple types of starter sets involving multiple combinations of races vs the other rather than the just the generic marines vs. xenos/chaos set we get every new edition.
But if we were to stick with this formula I would think that having marines vs. tau would be interesting particularly if it was one involving the Damocles Gulf Crusade. Or maybe even Grey Knights vs. some Daemons?

I'd like to see BA vs Nids in a new starter. It would be a good smaller force vs blob set up, not to mention they just released that Space Hulk PC game in 2013.
....And they are both armies I'm interested in playing.

Best not to constrict the player by the starter set. Generic Marines can be painted to be anything, even Chaos.
But seriously though, they need to stop with the snap-fit crap unless they supply multiple different limbs for different poses and loadouts. It's not a good starter set if it seriously constricts the options for the buyer.

The advantage of push fit is that it lets you start playing NOW. And they are easier to assemble. Both these things make it easy to start playing, hook fresh blood, and get people started. Which is exactly what the starter set needs to do.
As an established player, I'd prefer the multipart models. But I recognize that I'm not the target market for the starter set.

I'm actually a fan of the snap fit models. If they were to put in 'normal" models, we would not get NEAR the numbers of models or variety of units.
Besides, look at them, they are a far cry from the models of yesteryear in terms of deail forthem.
They may not give a full army, but they do let players start "now' and they whet the appetite of players who want something better with more options.
Most of us buy extra sets just for the al o the models and then use them to fill in ranks anyway. Dnt tell me you have not seen marine players go out and buy tactical model sets and put each of the special weapons on guys along with the heavy weapon and combi weapon to take up 6 of the bodies and then used the remaining 4 to make a few different sarge options or save them to extra heavy weapons onto from a dev box and then use the snap fit guys as the "grunts" of the unit in order to save themselves a bunch of money.

To be fair, from a devil's advocate POV, you also get stuck with overpriced plasma pistols everywhere.
I think 3rd was the only box with the full multi pose kits. Every other 40k box was snap-fit. From a amount in box standpoint it was not that far from the 2nd or 4th ed boxes. But they have been putting more and more in the box with each edition. Kinda nice.

I think in a perfect world I would like to see mega armoured squigs vs ...... Well it doesn't really matter what they fight.
In the real world it's very unlikely that SM won't be in the box as They continue to be GWs best seller. Maybe the new set will contain just flyers and some AA?

It will be 3 armies in the box. An O'vesa star, screamerstar + flying circus, and a Jetseer council + Wave Serpents in the same box. You will never have to get anything else but multiples of this box!
Obviously really expensive.
