Hey everyone!
I have recently decided to pick up some anime and I am looking to find a good Sci-Fi one. There are so many out there that I am not sure where to start. Series is preferable, but one off movies work too. If you recommend one, a brief summary of the plot would be cool.
Thanks all!

I'd recommend asking that in this thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/4320/386502.page#6385019
The people in that thread are quite nice people and there have been others that have asked that question on that thread too.

Thanks for the link!
I did see that thread, but it has grown considerably and I was looking for a specific genre of anime. I will sort through that thread in the meantime. :-)

I don't think you have to read through the whole thing. I jumped in after reading about half of the most recent page.

I'd recommend Psycho-Pass. Great dystopian future sci-fi about the ethics of living in a panopticon state, following a new officer in what passes for police there.

I'll chip in Steins;Gate. An incredibly simple description is that it is about time travel.
Additionally, a movie to wrap up the entire series was released earlier this month.

Ergo Proxy.
It starts out as basically Blade Runner, and then goes its own route.

Fair point.
I am currently in the mood for something that occurs in space. War, struggle, etc would all be good to have.
Also, the ones I have, borrowed, and enjoyed are Appleseed, Neo Genesis, and Ghost in the Shell.

I'd also suggest Ghost in the Shell, it's a very unique series.

One of my friends mentioned Gundam Wing. How is that series?

It's pretty much what all other mech anime springs from. This is not necessarily always a good thing.

I thought you wanted to watch good anime? To be fair, Wing is okay. It tends to get a lot of hype from Americans due to being the first Gundam series aired here, but it really doesn't deserve it. I say don't bother with it. If you want a good Gundam series, anything from the Universal Century is worth watching. Especially 08th MS Team, Char's Counterattack, and Zeta Gundam. If you want one of the alternate universe Gundam series, watch X. Gundam X is, IMHO the most underrated Gundam series. It also unfortunately happens to be the one series that Bandai continually skips over for merchandise. Even Turn A had more stuff released Speaking of, Turn A is also pretty good, though to be honest, I found myself siding with the "bad guys" waaaay more than the supposed heroes.
If you want a really gritty sci-fi war anime, check out Armored Trooper VOTOMS. The animation is a bit dated though, so keep that in mind and start out by watching the Armor Hunter Mellowlink spinoff series. Mellowlink is for the most part unrelated to the plot of the main show and has WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better animation. I'd say Mellowlink is probably a good introduction to the series.
If you want a depressing sci-fi anime, track down Space Runaway Ideon and its movies. Blue Gender is always fun if you can get past the sex and nudity.
If you want an interesting sci-fi anime take on classic literature, check out Argento Soma (based on Frankenstein) or Infinite Ryvius (based on Lord of the Flies). Despite their source material, both deal with giant robots and aliens.

Was Wing the first series aired in the US or was it simply the first one aired on Toonami, the biggishest place to watch good cartoons at the time?

Wing was the first Gundam series aired in the US. It had come out in Japan the previous year. Unfortunately Toomani went a little too far. At one point they were airing three gundam series back to back and some people got sick of it (arguably this led to the death of Toonami at the time, as viewership dropped and never went back up)..

And thus begun a sad time for the american anime scene.
I would second (or third) both Ghost in the Shell and Psycho Pass. They are both good sci-fi anime.
