Subject: Meanwhile in the public domain...

So according to my research (wikipedia) Sherlock Holmes is now in the public domain.
Along with King Kong (via the novel of the original movie)...
And Dread Cthulhu (via lax copyright renewals by the pulps)...
So...
THE PUBLIC DOMAIN PRESENTS:
SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE CURIOUS CASE OF KING KONG VS CTHULHU!
"It was elementary really Watson" the great detective said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "The mega-fauna, the madness gripping the natives, it was all there as clear as... PH'NGLUI! ...as clear as... as... the thing, in the center of your face, oh blast it you know what I mean!"
"The nose?" I replied wiping some drool from his chin.
"Yes of course the nose! Do you think I'm an idiot Watson! What else could I have meant! MGLW'NAFH!"
"Yes sir, of course sir." I said as I offered him a spoonful of porridge. Alas the bindings on his arms did not permit the great detective to feed himself.
"The hand of the old ones was everywhere, PH'NGLUI! What other force could have possibly cause long-dead tyrant lizards to once again walk the Earth, or cause a common low land gorilla to grow to such heights?"
"I cannot imagine sir."
"Of course you cannot you dimwitted fool! No one can! The old ones... the old ones... the old ones... MGLW'NAFH! Tell me Watson, have you ever considered what it would mean if we were but shadows in another's dream, what terrible revelation, what terrible apocalypse might we face when that dreamer awakens?"
"No, I do not believe I have sir."
"No! No one has! Why the very thought is mad! PH'NGLUI! Do you think me a madman Watson? Do you?"
"I..." I chose my words carefully. "I know you have been under a great deal of strain of late."
"They think me mad you know. All of them. I believe they seek to poison me to silence my words. Of course they think me mad, when in a land of liars the honest man is branded insane! Write that down Watson, write that down in one of your journals for that hack Conan Doyle! MGLW'NAFH! This world of ours is, it is but a dream of those elder Gods, they mold reality with their thoughts, a stray thought, a dream, and we could all be gone."
"Yes, I will be sure to write that down Holmes, I fear I must go however, perhaps I can visit again tomorrow."
"Yes, I need to rest Watson, rest..." He began to laugh, cackling in a most undignified way. My nose detected he had soiled himself again.
I signaled to the latchkey to let me out. As I walked down the halls of Bedlam Assylum I heard Holmes, once the greatest mind the Empire had ever known screaming "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!" Something about those words, those sounds chilled to the very bone.
I knew I had lied to Holmes, I would write of this, but not to share with Conan Doyle and his publisher. No one would know the secret of the great detective's final case nor the madness that ended his days.

There was a Sherlock Holmes meets Lovecraft story published in Year's Best Horror/Dark Fantasy some time ago, actually. Two or three years back, I think.
It was pretty good.
