Not seeing what the issue is. Clearly she's a light weight. There's absolutely no mention of "taser," "You're dumber than a box of rocks" or "time to meet Masters Funk and Wagnall" in the article.
Duval teacher faces termination for repeated profanity directed at students

Joyce Quiller investigationDuval teachers reprimanded for separate incidents resulting in student injuryBy Stephanie Brown
Jacksonville, FL —
A math teacher within Ribault High School is facing termination after the District finds she used profanity directed at her students- and it’s not the first time.
WOKV obtained the investigation in to Joyce Quiller, who teaches with The Bridge to Success program at Ribault. The Duval County School District first began this investigation in January, after receiving complaints from students and parents about Quiller’s conduct.
The investigation shows eight students in 10th and 11th grade met with the District, seven of whom accuse Quiller of using a range of profanities and having a general disregard for their work. One student said Quiller asked a student who came to school without a pencil “What is the point in coming to the mother f****** class if you do not bring materials”. Another heard Quiller tell a student to “Shut the f*** up”. When a separate student asked for make-up work, Quiller allegedly told her “I am not going to help you with s*** else”. Still another said Quiller “criticizes him and calls him a N*****.
Those students also say Quiller refuses to let them turn in work, doesn’t answer questions, and tells the class who is getting an “F” in front of all the other students. An academic audit was performed on Quiller’s class as a result of these allegations. The investigation says that found she had assigned 108 of her 140 students “F’s”, or 77.1%. The investigation says 90.7% of Quiller’s students received a “D” or “F”.
One of the students questioned did not have the same problems with Quiller. She told investigators Quiller is strict and does not put up with students who do not want to try, but she did not remember hearing Quiller use profanity. Another teacher placed in Quiller’s room to help for a period of time said Quiller does get angry and students had reported profanity to her, but she had also never heard it directly. The teacher further said she sits in the back of the room, and the students said most of the profanity were said softly, where only those immediately around Quiller could hear.
Quiller herself submitted a written statement to investigators saying she was “appalled and disturbed” by the allegations. She denies using any profanity and says she helps her student pull their grades up as much as possible. Further, Quiller says the Assistant Principal has a vendetta against her.
This is not Quiller’s first run-in with DCPS investigators. In December 2001, she received a written reprimand for saying she was “pissed” in the presence of students. In April 2013 she received a verbal reprimand for making an inappropriate comment to a student including “your mammy”. As recently as October 2013, she received yet another written reprimand for using profanity and derogatory language on several occasions in the presence of students. Investigators believe she said phrases like “Sit your a** down”, “get out my f****** class”, and “pull your damn pants up”. Quiller was still receiving counseling as a result of the most recent reprimand when this most recent investigation happened.
Quiller has been given a period of time to determine whether she wants to appeal. The School Board voted last week to suspend her immediately pending termination. The documents detailing the investigation weren’t considered public record until today. The District is looking in to whether Quiller has filed an appeal.

Another narcissist in the scary position of teaching the next generation and sucking badly at it (and not really caring).
Probably thought being in charge of a bunch of kids and teacher benefits would be great and is all confused on being called on behavior (you would not believe these children over an adult would you?).
Realizing now that treating children badly get people jumping on you with both feet in a hurry.

"she had assigned 108 of her 140 students “F’s”, or 77.1%"
Now I don't know if those grades were truly earned or not but I think that statistic is at the root of her being fired.
I wouldn't put it past the school administrators to trump up verbal abuse charges to get rid of a tenured teacher who is either under performing or refuses to give all the little boys and girls C's regardless of their performance.

Difficult to say anything without more information. I think the swearing thing is overblown anyhow, but schools are the museum of virtue, where adults are expected to act as slightly unrealistic role models for kids that don't see anyone from their day to day existence behaving like that.
Though, I've got classes where the majority of the kids are failing. I've also got classes where the majority of the kids are getting As. It depends quite a lot on the ability of the group in question.
Been sworn at plenty of times by kids and had parents swear for emphasis while talking to me in previous schools.

How friggin typical is this statement of the classroom today? How about:
"108 of her 140 students EARNED "F's"

Oh, absolutely. Especially since state funding is typically tied to graduation rates, etc. I realize these kids were 10th and 11th graders, but failing a class means they have to retake a class means they probably don't graduate on time. And this gak happens a lot.
Anecdotally:
I found out I was going to be laid off in Feburary of the school year (on a Wednesday during Lunch, no less; yes, my principal was a piece of gak) with four other teachers. I had a senior in one of my classes that, up to that point in the 2nd semester, had been to class about 3 times. He was a Heroin addict, and rarely attended school. He could barely read or write. He showed up for two days in a row in early March and wanted to make up a bunch of work to "pull his grade up." I gave him a packet of things he had missed. He turned in about 1/5 of it. Come Midterm time, he had like, a 7% in my class. I was told in Early April (with about 2 months of school left) that I needed to make sure he passed. I refused for numerous reasons. He'd been to class maybe 7 days in the semester. The principal pulled him from my class with about 6 weeks to go in the school year (long after kids were "allowed" to drop/switch classes) and put him in the classroom of a tenured teacher (who was, if it matters, a fething dumpster fire of an educator). The kid passed. And graduated. Having been to school a total of 14 times in the second semester.
So wrong on so many levels.

I don't think swearing is that serious of a thing as well, I mean it is our perception of them being bad that makes them bad
However I do think a classroom is still no place for it, especially when it's coming from an adult and aimed at the kids.

Yeah, there's a fairly crappy theory of educational psychology that says, basically:
-There is a correlation between success and self esteem.
-Therefore, high self esteem must CAUSE success!
-Therefore, anything that damages a child's self esteem damages their chances, and should be avoided. Criticism, telling them they're wrong, marking in red pen, etc etc.
Of course, the alternate explanation for that theory (that successful people have higher self esteem BECAUSE THEY ARE SUCCESSFUL) does not get much discussion. This is the training I got a few years ago, so it's still current, apparently. It blatantly doesn't work, but whatevs.

Well you have to be the second most cool teacher in the school with a principal that will back you. It helps that all your kids are the top 10% too. One lady complained (friend of SWMBO actually) when her boy was sprayed a few times (he deserved it) and she was completely shunned by the community and shut the heck up. EDIT: the coolest was a dot com millionaire who taught ONE class a semester and truly, epically, did not give a gak about anything other than the class. He didn't last too long though.

In Ohio graduation rates have direct correlation to how much funding a school gets via the district scorecards.

Schools never want kids to fail, it either looks bad for their statistics or can directly impact funding as Cincey describes.
Teaching in the US sounds hellish, and it's underpaid from what I've read to boot. I don't understand how they expect to get high quality teachers to stay in the profession without decent pay and working conditions.

Hell, I swore in front of students when I was subbing and student teaching. I said "pissed" in front of them AND my guiding teacher. Teacher told me that wasn't cool, but that was it. I don't see what the big deal is about pissed. Seems lightweight to me. If she dropped racial slurs and f-bombs, that's different.

I'm currently replacing a teacher who was suspended for two weeks for "something so horrible no one will tell me what it is." The students, additionally, have no clue what that is.
Students told me that talks to them on Facebook (the true f-bomb in a classroom, if you ask me). One even told me that he was trying to get hell raised while he was away.
I think the chimera of "free education" has gone on long enough in my parts of the world. We pay for it, through taxes, and it's time parents (I think) started pressuring their kids into performing a bit. In our system, students cannot fail until they reach grade 8, unless the parent insists.
The government has moved to lower the number of credits required to pass into grade 9, arguing that a grade 11 education is really nothing more than a work permit, and should not be denied anyone. Now try and have some self respect as a teacher.

As an adult with no children I snickered at some of this. That being said if 77% of your class is getting an F, then you're probably not too hot of a teacher either regardless of the snowflake theory of grading or not.

I must have had a weird collection of teachers at high school. One used to smash windows, occasionally attack students and swear. A 2nd used to tell you endless boring tales about her childhood and do up to half the lesson as a prayer. The third used to tell stories about ww2 and try and teach kids about life ( I do appreciate his lessons now) . I think these kids should be happy with their teacher.
When did "it builds character " become bad things destroy children?

It could mean a lot of things, none of them very good, and several would mean that the teacher isn't wholly to blame. At the very least it means an inquiry needs to be made. Of course, if the problem is institutional and the institution is the one doing the investigation...

I assume that was a rule only for cadet teachers, right?

In Japan, you don't even have to attend school and you graduate junior high school. I've had the experience of working at a 'prestigious' jr./sr. high in Tokyo, where the marking was set up that the minimum final score a student could get in a class was 63%. It's all a joke. It's all BS. And it's bad for you.
