As above, after reading a fair number of Skaven books I'm starting to want a WHFB army of rat men of my own.
I've got a couple of Rat Ogres from the Island of Blood boxed game and I love em.

Thinking of a Clan Moulder heavy force- suggestions?

General tips on new armies

1) Google for skaven forum - Warhammer has enough power that most factions have their own dedicated forums/groups online. You can oft find one or two and they can be a wealth of concentrated advices, tips, battle reports, army lists etc.. Not to day that Dakka hasn't got great resources, just that oft you'll find dedicated groups have a concentration of them.

2) Search the army lists for skaven here on Dakka and open up a notepad. Take a rough list of the units and the count of units being used (for units with squads and command give a rough list of the number of units per command group).

This might sound (actually it is) dull; but it can be a great way to get a good idea of what is "popular" and being used in average armies. It also starts to give you a rough idea of unit counts that you can expect to work toward for a typical army.

You'll also likely find others doing themed or similar armies that you're looking into so you can also tweak your desires based on those lists and the feedback those lists get.

3) Hunt ebay for some Island of Blood skaven kits - it can be a great way to get some core skaven for your army at not much cost (I've done the same for High Elves - esp as a few of those models were not for sale otherwise).

Rat Ogres are, at the current time, probably one of the lesser units of the Skaven Army Book. People don't really play them much, as they are somewhat underwhelming in comparison with the rest of the book.

But that said, unless you're going tournament scene, you could make a very flavourful Moulder army. It's fine enough for friendly games.

If you want a bunch of Rat Ogres you're going to want to start scouring ebay though. The Island of Blood Ogres are so much better than the Rat Ogre box, that they don't really fit with eachother.

As there are only two of the IoB ogres, you will also want to hunt for bits so you can convert your ogres so they don't all look the same.

Since ogres are quite big, they are quite thankful to convert, and weapon hands from the Ogre army should work quite well for some easy replacements.

As I'm not a power gamer, I did make a small Rat Ogre unit, but as you can see, my two Ogres from the Skaven Batallion box (which are the same ones as in the Rat Ogre box) are not up to the same standard as the IoB ones. The middle one I converted to make him not look the same as the far right one, and to act as a master moulded ogre.

One tip, no matter which of these ogres you choose to work on, do yourself a favour and get some greenstuff.

The old ones have a HORRIBLE choice of spines that you glue on, which doesn't fit at all, so it makes these deep weird holes in their backs, and the new ones don't go flush together, so they need to be filled out along the line where you click them together as they are split down the middle vertically.

Yeah I've got the IoB Rat Ogres- really nice models. The current kit for Rat Ogres doesn't look too bad in fairness, but you seem to be speaking from experience lol. Really liking your buzzsaw rat ogre! Good use of orky bitz!
Not really bothered about tournaments- I just enjoy the hobby for what it is.

The currently available non-IoB Rat Ogres are awful, awful model. I'm very happy not to have them
The old metallic models are very nice, and the (very) old ones are pretty decent, be they (old) Boneripper, Blood Bowl, Mordheim or regular ones

Each to their own I guess...If you look at the "Oh Rats!" part of this KS- the Rat Ogre there is pretty monstrous..

Well Skaven are a really fun army to play!
As for clan moulder the choices are fairly limited but Rat Ogres aren't the best but the Hellpit Abomination is the bomb!

Be prepared the paint a TON of models but it is well worth it to field a fully painted 2000+ point Skaven army.

I don't know why there's all this bashing of the Rat Ogres- for monsters, they're pretty quick! Sending them after the weaker units would cause all kinds of mayhem!

Because saves, yo. But also, it's because there are so many viable (and better) things in the army book. Rat Ogres aren't terrible. They are just lackluster compared with the other stuff you can bring.

Forums tend to have a higher concentration of players who want "the best" out of an army; at least in theory based upon the numbers. AS a result you'll oft find there are "bad" things in the codex which are mentioned here which are not outright bad, but which might be more situational or require specific use on the table to get the best out of them. So certainly don't get discouraged - also remember a lot can vary based on how your local games play out. Some areas will have different armies and different choices within those armies that end up giving you a different kind of opposition as to someone playing in a different store environment

Drybrushing works well but quickshading works much better, here's my method
- take 50 rats in front of you (80% of mine are based 2x2 or 3x2, before I paint them)
- basecoat with can of vermin brown
- paint clothes in 5x10 colours of 1x50 single colour depending on what you're looking for
- paint flesh on tails, face, hands, feet
- paint dark-ish brown on wood & leather
- paint metal on weapons & armour (I paint sycorax bronze / scorpion brass mix armour and boltgun metal weapons)
- dip in ArmyPainter (choose tone depending on your tastes)
- shake vigorously somewhere that doesn't fear droplets of sticky armypainter thingy

It takes me 4-5 hours to paint around 50 rats, doesn't feel taht depressing when it goes fast like that
Armypainter makes it ridiculously easy, fast and efficient to have a very decent / good look on regular models
Even on characters, I do the same method, simply adding a few highlights (and fancy colours) and being more cautious on the details

The next steps are the basing (dark sand, pebbles, patches of grass > wash) and the matt varnish

While I've recently developed a love for GW's own Shades/Washes, I have to agree with Tankol. Army Painter's Quickshade makes a sloppy paintjob look better than average.

(It's called Quickshade, Tankol Army Painter is the brand)

yeah you're right
I just got used to that name as I started using their products from when they only had the quickshade
GW shades are great, but they just don't work as well to cover/protect the whole model in one go

To be honest, keep rat ogres out of any form of competitive play.
The lack of save and only S4 really isnt great (although I4 isnt bad on a monster)

Shame really though since they are quality models and i love using them.

Also, yes, the plastic kit ones do look really cheesy, but i still love mine :p

For a moulder army (if your going fully themed) your stuck with just throt as a lord choice, who is anything but amazing.
Low ish points though.
However, you would take him to make giant rats count and for 2 units of rat ogres as troops
Just put him with giant rats as he tends to eat models alot.

Can also take a warlord on bonebreaker to stay fluffy and add hitting power to a unit of rat ogres.

No hero choice for moulder really, although a BSB is kind of important in most games.

To stay fluffy you do lose any form of magic, which sucks badly.
However, the army does look great and if your not playing tournaments, people shouldnt be going super heavy on magic anyway.

Giant rats - Nice unit, plenty of attacks and fairly reliable.
Large unit to keep throt out of trouble.
Also run 2-3 minimum sized units as darts to cover flanks of units.

Slaves - Just blocks of 50 or so with a musician is good enough to tarpit units while ogres rush into them.

Rat ogres - As ive said above, but you want to add skweel into your biggest unit as the buff goes from nice to amazing. (poisoned attacks, +1 attack, regeneration)
If you roll regen, the units instantly becomes tons better.

No specials really unless your taking more rat ogres.

Rare choices are not really optional here.
Just the abomination, which in short terms, is fething amazing.
In 1,000 point games take 1, in 2,000 games take 2, you always want to max them out where possible.
They are fluffy and hit any unit bloody hard.
However, if your taking 2, only give 1 of them warpstone spikes.
Units with banner of the world dragon etc love magical attacks against them, so throw the normal one at them and watch the unit fall apart very quickly.

I'd also say that if you can get 2 abominations into combat with the same unit, it will die.
Characters, special unit, monsters etc, does not matter, it will die.

Like I said, I have no interest in tournament play. Friendly games with folks you know is way better, because they're less likely to be a jerk about things.

On topic: I don't think I'll keep it exclusive to just Moulder. From what I've read, Skaven can work together fairly well until their warpstone induced paranoia tells them otherwise! I'll probably have my Warlord from Clan Mors (with some Storm Vermin as his bodyguards)

Keep in mind that very few (if any) clans operate with 100% members of their own clan. Most still buy slaves, weapons, weapon teams and all sorts of other gear from other clans. Eshin is the most likely, imo, to operate 100% completely independently, mostly due to the nature of their work. Pestilens would be close, but I think even they buy things like Pox rats from Moulder.

As to the effectiveness of Rat Ogres, I can't say anything from experience. I've been meaning to give them a try, but their cost usually keeps them out of my lists.

88 points at the lowest. 128 for a single full rank. They still have Ld issues, which is extra bad for ROgres that lose their packmaster as they'll likely fail their Ld to resist Stupidity. Sure they're fast, but Giant Rats are just as fast and also aren't Stupid. S4 is nice, but I can get that on Stormvermin who actually come with an armor save. T4 vs T3 and decent A per model are pretty much the only real advantages I see. Even then, Stormvermin have nothing to fear from Mulitple Wounds weaponry (such as, say, Flame Cannons, Mortars and the like) whereas Rogres do.

That said, I love the idea of giant monstrous rat ogres. I love throwing my Warlord on a Bonebreaker because it really helps him shred through enemy infantry. ROgres really just can't compare to most other MI units; they need a decent price drop or a few options/buffs to really be a competitive choice. (To be clear, I don't mean "competitive" in the "tournament scene" sense, but rather the "why would I spend my points on these" sense.) Looking cool only gets you so far on the army list.

After reading the recent Thanquol book ( Temple of the Serpent I think?) I did quite like the idea of my Warlord getting a ride from his pet Rogre. I think if anything, the Grey Seers should be allowed a ride other than a Screaming Bell. What are pox rats like for mounts by the way? I've seen Brood Horrors but not the pox rats.

Because they are probably the only truly BAD thing in the Skaven Army Book. Like it actually makes your Warlord worse than he is on foot.

You want a Rogre or War Litter.

I don't know about making your Warlord worse, but they certainly don't provide anything useful that can't be obtained from a Bonebreaker or a War-Litter.

They're M6 (same as a bonebreaker) with 2 poisoned attacks. They don't boost the T or W of a Warlord like the Bonebreaker does, and provide less attacks than a War-Litter. Then again, they're 5 points cheaper than a litter and 35 points cheaper than a Bonebreaker.

Certainly not a great choice, but far from making the Warlord worse than he is normally.

Never looked into the brood horror to be honest since the rules come from FW.

But pox rat is usually a stay away from upgrade.
Bonebreaker is the best of the standard 3, but if you dont have the point, the war litter isnt bad.

Ill be honest, but the main reason i have kept away from rat ogres in the past is simply points, save and armour.
I can get 5 stormvermin with shields for the same points cost.
They give you far more than a rat ogre in terms of S4 attacks.

Failing that, you can nearly get 6 plague monks for that price too.
Which while they are lower strength, their attacks are pretty damn insane for such small critters.

Hmmm, seems ok, but a tad heavy on points.
I think the main issue is that its points after a few upgrades bring it into abomination territory, which isnt good as the Abom wins hands down.

The real issue though is that your general will be riding this thing, meaning he cant hide in a unit like with a bonebreaker, and it has low toughness, wounds and no save.
A stray cannonball will kill this or your general pretty quickly.

WHFB has a real issue with characters on mounts being killed very quickly, so i see this as being fun, but very high risk since your general could be dead on turn 1.

Just want to point out, a Warlord on a Bonebreaker can't hide from cannon fire in a unit either. A Warlord on a Bonebreaker counts as Monstrous Cavalry; skaven have no other monstrous cavalry for him to hide in. Even Rat Ogres are monstrous infantry and since the unit types don't match he can't get a Look out Sir! save.

But while a Rogre mount makes him a beast in combat, the pox rat upgrade is, in my opinion, not even close to worth losing LOS! for.
Personally, I prefer the litter of the three. It's a decent upgrade with the only drawback being a wider base (as most people use the defacto standard of a 40x40 base for the litter.)

Yeah 775 points is a bit steep. Particularly when you can get a good number of Skaven for that price. Can't imagine the hurt you'd feel if that thing snuffed it in a game!!

Would be nice to field as a general Verminlord though as it looks a good bit more badass than the current model.

I suppose that's why you make him run like an athlete into combat as quick as poss so he can munch some weaklings!!

There's a beast in every man, and it stirs when you put a sword in his hand

I really like taking mono-clan lists every once and a while, and I always have fun with moulded especially. I've found with rat ogres that it's best to go big or go home, so I always run my ogres in a block of 8. This isn't super competitive but it tends to get results and while it has only once made it's points back the Skaven book has so many efficient value units (WLC poison sling gutter runners). That it helps to offset it, also the very silly warlord on bonebreaker combo can be effective. I usually run one of two builds, a barebones warlord with just a bit of protective gear and maybe a halberd, or a warlock augmented well armored warlord who can S5 spam with his ogre. Also I once tried a warlord with the fell blade on an ogre and uhh, just don't bother, it will only bring you pain.

Silacier & Rozgarth: Hey you should start playing warmahords with us.
Me: OK (sets down Tyranid, drives to store and picks up Legion of Everblight)
Me: the more things change....
