This kid just got tired of being slapped and kicked and got some "private justice".
Where the heck was the bus driver in all of this, and what is going to be the fall out? I mean, in a national svhool system where kids get expelled for saying "bang", this should be a huge story, because outside of the scofflaws that make gun looking shapes out of Pop Tarts or their fingers, there is no hint of violence in our schools.

Zero tolerance laws aren't there to protect your kids. They are there to protect the school administrators. Good on the kid for teaching the bully a lesson.

Victim blaming, failed education system, and blatant stereotyping in the first five posts! It's a Dakka hat trick!
If only George Zimmerman and some Nazis had given the boy a gun, then maybe his attacker wouldn't have conspired with Obama to sell Finecast to the victims of Benghazi.

Should we add "Pointing out DakkaDakka stereotypes" to the bingo card?
But isn't that what zero tolerance policies are? I mean, I would imagine that laws against firearms and knives are the policies in place to protect your kids.

Way to go, Steven. Neutralize the aggression with a chokehold then make sure to let go before they die. just let them see it as a possibility. Then ask them if they are OK while they start to snuffle.
Good on him.

Not naturally. But the current system of just allowing yourself to get pushed around creates it.
Kids need, and should be allowed, to fight back.

That's true.
I had a school bully once. Needless to say, he got beaten up and he stopped his "activities", but it wasn't allowed by the school rules.
I think you should definitely be allowed to fight back.

Fighting I guess can be an effective way of dealing with bullying in school but if you're bullied often are you going to put up a fight for every occurrence? Where do you draw the line? If you're someone who gets bullied often it becomes exhausting picking fights with everyone who bullies you,
so I still think learning other techniques to deal with bullying is important.

The thing is that bullies feed off the fear and the lack of retaliation, if they get a broken nose and a kick in the junk they'll most likely stop.
Bullying should be countered with a variety of techniques, of which physical retaliation by the victim should definitely be one of them.

True, but some will give up if you give them non-reactions as you're ruining there fun by not going with the response they want, plus constantly fighting for every time someone harasses you makes you come across as an ill-tempered and violent parson which can make you unlikeable.

.
The problem is that a bully often is looking for a target because of other issues. The target almost doesn't actually matter to most kids; its just an excuse and the bullies method of venting or dealing with their own issues. Thus if their chosen target proves to be too violent or dangerous they might back off for a bit, but because the actual cause that made the bully start in the first place isn't solved there is every chance that they will simply attempt to identify another likely target to focus upon instead.
They could also shift to a non-physical method of abuse which can sometimes be even more harmful - punches and kicks are one thing but words can be very destructive and can often spread to others; suddenly the victim can come under abuse or be ignored as a result of lies or slander spread through their community. That latter method is also much harder to control or crack down on as once started other stories can rise up.
It's a complicated matter and our gut instinct has to sometimes be set aside to consider that the bully themselves is often in as much need of support as their victims - even if the support is of a different nature.

It turned rather scary when he started choking her, in my view. Before then, for both people, it was rather well, sad. But the choking it turned downright scary.

Fair enough, I don't think I ever came up with a system that really reduced bullying whether through fighting, insulting back, ignoring them, etc none of them were perfect at dealing with it even if I stopped one person from bullying me a new one would take his place. That being said
now that I'm not in high school and am in uni instead I haven't been bullied once.

It's all well and good to talk about fighting back, but what if the person bullied isn't big enough, strong enough, or of a peaceful disposition?
The logical answer should be to go to someone of authority in order to stop the bullying.
But what are the options if, as in the case of the video, the driver, the authority figure here, did not thing one to intervene?
Court? How many people have that kind of money or the luck to have a lawyer take the case pro bono?

I also really hurt someone badly once during a bullying situation. I felt sort of badly over it, but the rest of the kids were a lot faster with their lunch money after that, so ultimately it worked out.

If I am honest....I want to say some unflatteringly racist....
I will just say: she deserved all she got and should have gotten more.
The school system should be sued for negligence and the bus driver, principal, superintendent....charged with child endangerment.
Something like this should *never* happen or get this far...ever.

This is not true.
In addition, luckily there are still school districts out there that don't have ludicrous enforcement of zero-tolerance policies.
As far as the video goes: while interesting, I don't think it should be taken as some sort of indication of the state of schools and how they deal with bullying on a national level.
