Sounds like usual barrels, but heavily burnt.

They look like barrels that are lashed to the side of the vehicle. When the vehicle comes under attack, one of the crew members lights them on fire and cuts them loose. Basically, they act kind of like depth charges.

Well then they would just be 28mm barrels lashed to the side of said vehicle.

So primitive? Then, enemies with shoot at barrel and set that vehicle on fire.

AM are still using coal power and M2 machine guns.

It's likely that they wouldn't do diddly squat except scorch the paint a bit.

Fire barrels are usually used to stop infantry, who are very flammable [I suppose]

Maybe they are tubular one use flamers mounted on the tank? I'm going to model them as smoke launchers with the tubes drilled out and painted to look charred.

Just strap a couple of flamers to the hull near the crew compartment, and paint "for emergency use only" like on a fire extinguisher cupboard.

I view them as 'barrels' such as a gun barrel, pointed outward with the muzzles of the barrels pointed towards oncoming foes. They'd be about the same diameter (and would function the same as) a snub-nosed shotgun that the gunner/driver could activate if they saw infantry bearing down on the vehicle.

Me, I'd take some Smoke Launcher bits, cut the barrels of the smoke launchers off and array them in a staggered 5 to 6 barrel stack, and mount them to the front corners or sides of the vehicle so they look like an offensive measure versus the defensive mechanism smoke launchers are.

Just my .02 cents.

Take it easy.

They remind me of the phougas used in the Vietnam War. Basically a 55 gallon drum of napalm which was used as a part of a defensive position. When Charlie got to close they'd blow the barrel and watch them burn. Some variants included a claymore mine for added effect.

So yeah, barrels of promethium with fuzes or demo charges sounds about right.

I'd assumed they were a fiery version of frag/smoke granades, so all you'd need would be some sort of short-range launcher representation. For the lazy, simply use ordinary smoke launcher bits but paint the ends red or something...

They're just described as barrels full of promethium that are set on fire and released.
