Rep. Thompson doubles down on racial remarks in interview with CNN's Dana Bash
Posted by
CNN Staff
(CNN) - In an exclusive interview with CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash, Rep. Bennie Thompson doubled down on controversial remarks he made about race over the weekend.
The Mississippi Democrat had argued Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, a black conservative, is an "Uncle Tom" who doesn't stand up for African Americans.
In his interview with the New Nation of Islam webcast on Sunday, which was first reported by BuzzFeed, the eleven-term African American argued President Barack Obama has been mistreated by other politicians, including Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, because he is black.
Follow @politicalticker Follow @DanaBashCNN
Here's the interview between Bash and Thompson:
Bash: When you said Clarence Thomas was an "Uncle Tom," what did you mean by that?
Thompson: "Well if you look at his decisions on the court, they have been adverse to the minority community, and the people I represent have a real issue with an African American not being sensible to those issues."
Bash: Isn't that a racially charged term?
Thompson: "For some it is, but to others it's the truth."
Bash: Because looking at that and hearing that kind of language, that certainly wouldn't be appropriate if it was coming from somebody who was white.
Thompson: "But I'm black."
Bash: That makes it OK?
Thompson: "I mean, you're asking me the question, and I'm giving you a response. The people that I represent, for the most part, have a real issue with those decisions–voter ID, affirmative action, Affordable Care Act–all those issues are very important and for someone in the court who's African American and not sensitive to that is a real problem."
Bash: The other thing you were talking about is the fact that you believe some of the opposition, maybe even much of the opposition, to the president is because of the color of his skin.
Thompson: "Well, I've been here a long time. I've seen a lot of issues come before Congress. I've never seen the venom put forth on another candidate or a president like I've seen with this president and that's my opinion."
Bash: Are there specific things that people have said that are racially tinged that make you say that, or are you reading the tea leaves of what's going on?
Thompson: "I've seen quite a few State of the Union messages, I've never heard a president called a liar in a State of the Union message."
Bash: You think Congressman Joe Wilson was race based?
Thompson: "Well, I've never heard it before, it was a stupid decision...statement, but it has no real bearing."
Bash: last question, just broadly...Where do you think the Republican Party is right now on issues of race? You have younger people who are trying to reach out to the African American community. Do you see things changing?
Thompson: "You always see a change when you see the policies change, when you see programs that have been beneficial to the survival to African Americans in this country being cut, whether it's Head Start, nutrition programs, educational programs, job training programs. It's hard to demonstrate that you care about people when the programs that they hold closest to their survival are being put on the chopping block."
Bash: Were Mitch McConnell's comments were racist?
Thompson: "It had nothing to with that. The comments are insensitive. To say to a president that you're going to oppose anything that he puts out there is just totally..."
Bash: You think it was race based?
Thompson: "Well I've never heard him say it to any other president."

So you're ok with calling a member of SCOTUS Uncle Tom, and Senate minority leader a racist because he opposes POTUS?

I agree, Go get some job training if you want to suceed in life. My college will have you pay 10$ a year and it takes two years in their program to be a welder, 3 to become a building inspecter and other things. I think it is great that the government in cali put a 5 year limit on Welfare benifits.

I tried suggesting that in a sociology class. The literal answer I got "You shouldnt have to get shot at to earn a living" The teacher stopped the argument until I answered that only a fraction of the military is actually combat.
I mean, I do believe there are forces and oother things tht do make it difficult for poorer americans to make a legitimate living, poor education in inner cities and other problems that need to be addressed, but to say it is impossible is an insult to all involved

Any opposition to the President is racist according to him:
“I’ve been in Washington. I saw three presidents now. I never saw George Bush treated like this. I never saw Bill Clinton treated like this with such disrespect,” Thompson said. “That Mitch McConnell would have the audacity to tell the president of the United States — not the chief executive, but the commander-in-chief — that ‘I don’t care what you come up with we’re going to be against it.’ Now if that’s not a racist statement I don’t know what is.”

You all do understand that there are numerous children who depend on things like SNAP, Headstart, and WIC to eat right? Or that for many kids from poor families, the meals they get at school are generally the only meals that they get? Some schools even provide backpacks of food to send home with kids on the weekends.
So yes, some people do actually depend on these programs for literal survival.

1. You do realize those programs aren't limited to minorities right ? And simple numbers wise, more whites are on them than blacks.
2. Half of those "survival" programs can be alleviated with a library card (free) or Internet access and a half ounce of motivation and personal accountability.

Who said I wanted to say racist things? I know you did, which is just stupid, and insulting. Maybe dont make up stupid things that like in the future.
I dont want to hear the N word on the radio or TV, even if it comes from black people I find it offensive. Why I have to be black to find the word offensive seems like a double standard.
Also, im not painting all black people with the same brush, I never said all black people do it, just that those who do, get a free pass.
Its 100% true that not all will use racist terms, its also 100% true that our society accepts and gives a free pass to those that do.
but I certainly expected the "you're a racist for mentioning that there is a double standard" card to be played, and you certainly did not dissapoint there.

I do realize that and never said anything to the contrary.
His statement was that african americans often depend on programs for survival.
You called bs, essentially.
I showed that african americans (along with, as you say, plenty of nonafrican americans) DO in fact depend on those for survival.
Personal accountability? Do you think there is a reason, perhaps, that I specifically mentioned children? You do understand, further, that the VAST majority of those programs goes to people who work, are disabled or elderly? (i.e., already working or unable to work)
Seriously, the Far Right has done a fantastic job of obfuscating the facts of the welfare programs in the US., whether it's who receives them (as you correctly point out, the majority of people on Welfare are not black, but white), or how much they actually cost us (food stamps, as a program, actually boost the economy instead of draining it.). It's sad. And it's sad to me that so many Americans would rather gak all over the poor instead of help them.

1. You do realize those programs aren't limited to minorities right ? And simple numbers wise, more whites are on them than blacks.
2. Half of those "survival" programs can be alleviated with a library card (free) or Internet access and a half ounce of motivation and personal accountability.
I know, if only those kids from poor families had the internet and a can-do attitude, they wouldn't have to go hungry.
