I don't really mind proxies. As long as the model beiung proxied in is at leasta close to the model, ESPECIALLY with special characters. I have a plastic commander for my templars army that has a combi melta and a power weapon: I've dropped him once as Helbrecht. I like the helbrecht moidel, but I have other things I'd rather drop my limited funds into. Saying an appropriately sizable model is Ghazkull, or that this land raider is an LRC is no problem. Dropping a lichtor as a carnifex or (and I'm not kidding) a NOTECARD as a leman russ just isn't cool.
And on the subject of poorly painted I once played a gray knights army that looked like it was painted with a shotgun filled with paint and poop. But waht made me cry was the 3 forgeworld dreadnaughts that looked absolutely terrible. Has anyone else seen this travesty?

Proxies and unpainted models are fine. I use them all the time.

But when you start slapping down neon green-and-orange Fagmarines...*shudder*

I would definitely prefere badly painted over bare.

I have no problem with badly painted armies, and I will tell you why.

People play them knowing fully well they don't look good, but that does not stop them.
They keep trying, and they will happily put them on the table to game, even if they are embarassed by them.
Most of the time I have played poorly painted armies they have apologised to me about them, and I always felt terrible that for some reason they felt the need to do so.

I respect that a lot more than someone who just cant be arsed, so fields an un painted army and does not so much as mention it.

@Watcher: posting once is enough. 5 times is excessive.

By "Proxies", I think people are complaing about situations in which the model is nothing like what you might expect it to be, or confusing for another model. I.e. generic Skeleton proxying in for a SM Chaplain.

Badly painted. But if their painting is just akin to IRL trolling (you know... just annoying in choice of colours, stupid, thought out to be headache-inducing), I'll say something.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Bare over badly panited to me. I think of it this way, say you see a awesome drawing, now said awesome drawing being colored by a person who is bad at painting. which would you have ugly painted drawing or awesome drawing that has not been painted.

Because the 'official' Space Marine color schemes are all so subtle...

I'm in the "as long as you're making progress..." camp. As long as there's an effort to assemble and paint I don't mind.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

They must be at least primed, or I won't play against them. I simply won't touch metal minis unless they're primed.

I'm fairly open-minded about what opponents (and in some cases allies) have on the table, and I'll play just about anything save terrible proxy-fests. Folk probably have their reasons why their army isn't --insert design component here--'d and that is understandable. Myself, though, I'm a bit of a perfectionist about my army and as an artist (animator, not really painter but eh, I'm learning) I take a modicum of pride in my work. When my army was first bought and assembled, I spent almost a month thereafter hunched over a small table a few nights a week until perfectly ridiculous morning hours before I would even take it to my FLGS. I count myself fortunate I never woke up with my face on my mixing tray and a snapped plastic chainsword embedded in my forehead. Chainsword-related head trauma aside, I do very much enjoy playing against armies that are at least as painted and based as mine, especially those that are nicer as they give me something to aspire to.

P.S.: Pardon my rambling, I have a nasty case of quasi related tangent-itis. I'll try to post some macro shots of my army in action this weekend in the Paints forum for critique, I would love the input.
