I'm sure this will wreak the same levels of devastation as the Burd Flu, Sars, Mad Cows Disease and Salmonella epidemics that the tabloids all insisted were going to be the end of civilization. You'll excuse me if I opt not to lapse into a fear induced coma.

On the subject of Drug Companies and their charges, I wonder how Doctors, who swear the Hypocratic Oath upon completion of training, reconcile said oath with the blatant money grubbing the Drug Companies so often indulge in? Surely the two ethos are diametrically opposed. The Doctor swears to ease suffering and cure people wherever they can, refusing no one, to which the Drug Companies reply.... "I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands
Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

They're probably waiting for an actual emergency. Or danger. This is neither.
i agree with this, i mean c'mon, there are 2-10 people in England with it right now, and they are all in quarantine, we have nothing to fear until man-flu comes about
plus, i believe scientists have a 'basic' flu vaccine that can be modified to suit another strain of it.

There is only one important question to ask in the midst of all this:
"Are the people who have died of Swine Flu coming back as zombies?"
If no, then I'm not too worried.
If yes, then I need to make an S-Mart run.

True dat. But I can't help wondering if these increasingly frequent cycles are a coverup for something bigger.
Umm, this is mad cow, that's why the brains were bad. Yes, it spreads by eating brains. No, they weren't eating brains, the ummmm, cows were. Crud, I mean they were fed brains. Yeah, that's it.
Oh, that,? Just, ummm bird flu. that's it. Nothing suspicious about that. We just had to cut off the heads for testing. Rumors of quarantined villages being eradicated are blatant lies.
Mexico? Yeah, swine flu. No, I'm sure. Of course the victims didn't bite anyone. It's just the flu. Burning the bodies if perfectly normal. And people often moan and wander around when sick.
Nah, probably just a scare scam to make pharma business more money. Thank you corporate media!

Flu can be a killer, the last real outbreak was in 1918 and it killed about as many people as WW1, so there is room for concern.
However times have changed, world health is more prepared even in the developing world. This is Swine Flu, not Italian Flu (cookie to the first to recognise the source).

There's no need to insult my country for me pointing out an historical fact. And our population, by the way, is 21 million plus. Even in the present day, you can't deny Australia's importance; we're the closest 'western' neighbour to Asia.
On-topic: This probably isn't anything serious. We have had loads of 'ultimate killer diseases' like SARS and Avian flu, and I doubt that this is any different. If you look at the number of deaths in pandemics since 1918, they have decreased greatly thanks to a modernised health system.

The threat comes from where it's developing. In Mexico City, in one day alone, Hospitals dealt with 7,000 people with Flu like symptoms. Now granted, not all will have the disease, but given Mexicos poor health service, the virus has a lot of potential hosts to mature and adapt in. Given that number, it's entirely possible it will develop into a drug resistant strain in a relatively short time, then my friends, we are boned. The drugs being administered right now are apparently only effective in the early stages, which is not a good thing. So no panic right now, sure. But give it a few months.....
