Beautiful Army! I normally don't like themed armies such as this but i'm such a sucker for the Dune Universe. Your fremen are amazing and i noticed those water rings right away. Unlike some i prefer the look of the movie fremen (whole cast actually) to that of the miniseries, I've always found the movie matched the books description of the characters, Especially the Duke, Paul, & Jessica.

I had been thinking about adding a Bene Gesserit squad to my SoB army for the fun of it but i don't know how i could compete with your army.

Fantastic work here. Your attention to detail is commendable.

No Gurney Halleck? :(

Might be tricky with Black Templar but I think you need to add some Inquisitorial stuff. Adding an inquisitor and retinue is a nice way to add a mentat, etc.

For Bene G's, I think you could use a callidus or cullexus or maybe death cult assassins. By adding the Inquistor you open up that possibility.

Ya no Gurney. I thought about using him as a Helbrecht with lots of neophytes as left over atreides soldiers, but there are some issues with this idea which I haven't quite gotten to yet. Also, the best part of inquisitors is often their psychic powers- Black templars can't use allies who have psychic powers (except GKs) so the use of inquisitors is a little complicated as well.

Easily one of the best themed armies I've ever seen.

Though I could never far enough into the Dune universe to really enjoy it, I have nothing but respect for Frank Herbert and his creation. And you have done it more than justice.

I think this just gave me enough inspiration to start on my own (completely unrelated) themed army that I've had in the back of my head since I first started Warhammer Fantasy.

I'll put in a second vote for Leto II as a Baneblade (Despite canonical impurity). Also, since you're considering this to be Fremen in the 41st century, perhaps you could have some fun creating your own characters in the vein of Maud'Dib. I'm sure a select few people have risen up to lead the Fremen in that amount of time.

I thought the Duncan gholas usu died because they couldn't handle discovering that they were gholas? Also some issue with a creeping insanity as they aged and memories of their previous life pre-ghola crept into the mind of a physical being who had not actually done those things?

I like the way you've approached the use of characters from Dune in the army. If you field Leto II, make sure you include Fishwives!

I don't know how I feel about the Sardukar helping out Fremen, but I guess you've got to bend the rules somewhere to make things fit...

I know nothing about the Black Templars and even less about Dune, but I am thoroughly impressed and inspired. Dude...simply incredible! As an Ork player / noob converter who enjoys building his own stuff and creating weapons, I can imagine how pleasing this army must be to field. I mean, even if you lost every game - which you clearly stated you don't - it would feel awesome to play these guys! To see your mind's creation locked in bloody combat must be the most rewarding part! Great work and thanks for the inspiration.

The Duncan gholas die for many many many reasons. Generally speaking, they don't die from the revelation of death- in fact, a Duncan cannot regain his previous memories until he has faced this realization. As one might imagine, the sudden influx of every memory and emotion from one's multiple past lives is nearly enough to kill a man, only nearly. Duncan's generally die one of three ways:

1.Leto II kills them.
2.Leto II's forces kill them.
3.They die in battle somewhere.

Leto II keeps purchasing gholas to preserve the Atreides gene stock and to keep the spirit of revolution alive- Duncan had been a slave in his first life, and as such has an insurmountable hatred of Tyranny. As such is the case, he always tries to revolt against Leto II, often inspiring entire populaces to join him.

I have considered Leto II before- the only way I could live with myself is if I played chaos and treated him as one of the legendary greater daemons.

With that said, I HAVE considered playing the Fremen as both chaos and black templars- that way I could use Bene Gesserit as sorcerers with lash (representing the power of voice).

Thanks! Half of my strategy is that when you see my army you simply don't know how to react.

GMMStudios wrote:How do you paint your bases? I like that look a lot.

I'll indulge you then! I start with a primer of grey- any old krylon or whatever is fine. I then drybrush the base vomit brown (I believe), it's pretty much a darkish yellow. Next is a drybrush of khaki followed by drybrushes of bleached bone, VERY light skull white and my secret weapon 'white metal' by Game Colour. The previous paints give it an earthy, desert like feel, but Arrakis is mentioned as having silvery grey sand. With the addition of white metal, you get grey sand which juuuust manages to catch the light just right.

yeri wrote:This is awesome. By the way are you going to read the new book "Winds of Dune".

EDIT: are you going to make any fish speakers?

I have tried and tried again to read Brian Herbert's stuff- every time I get a chapter in and then get this unmistakable feeling that I'm reading someone's fan fiction, not the masters original idea. I'm sure I'll attempt it, but we'll have to see. Also, I have considered making fish speakers- but have yet decided how... The fish speakers were the most potent warriors the universe ever saw. However, in 40k armor = potency, generally speaking (terminator vs. space marine). I have considered using them as termies, but the problem persists that fish speakers never rode worms- the main transport in my army. Also, I could use them as deep strikers, but if you have ever faced my army, you know that my main tactic is unified strike... on my terms. Deepstrikers and reserves are too spotty for me since when I decide the time is ripe to attack, I go for it in full force. Also, the fish speakers were INSANELY fast- termies can't even pursue... I guess I could use them as sword brethren, but we'll see.

Thanks! I always appreciate alternative models, whether or not I use them in my Fremen force (my other current project is a vampire grey knight force)

I too had issues with the Sardaukar, however, remember this... After the fall of Shaddam IV (Emperor before Paul) the Sardaukar became loyal to the new emperor. Although they were eventually phased out by Fremen and ultimately the fish speakers, Sardaukar did exist for several hundred years after Paul's ascension. Also, I generally put Duncan with the Sardaukar- this represents the fact that in the Dune story line, the last of the Sardaukar fell when Duncan led an insurrection with them against Leto II- only to be utterly crushed.

It's the Obi Wan Star fighter model. It came from a box set at Michael's Craft Stores and was a 'snap together' set. I don't remember what scale it was exactly, but I think it was more in the 1:32 range...

I had a thought: you could field the force using the Eldar codex. I'm partial to them, though, so I'd naturally think they'd be best.

Guardian (Storm or Defender) Fishwives, Harlie and Aspect Fremen, Wave Serpent & Falcon Worms, Duncan as Autarch or Farseer. Warlocks could be Bene Gesseret, Guildsmen or even a Naib Council! Think about it! This would give the army the legendary mobility the Fremen are renown for.

Oh yeah, Leto II as the Avatar...

I really don't know anything about Dune off hand. However if you were looking for something potent and possibly fast, maybe look outside the Black Templar. You can always use Grey Knights/ Assassins for a great deal of things. Reading about them they sound like normal Grey Knight squads would seem effective. strength 6 close combat with storm bolters is a mean combo.

Also I was curious, why did you choose to use Black Templar?

I chose to use black templar primarily because of their cc prowess. However, they also had special rules which really captured the zealotry of the Fremen (litanies of hate, oaths, righteous zeal, etc).

With the new space wolves book coming out, however, they may find themselves challenged for proxihood!
