I think the real question is why hasn't a moderator limited Wrex to, say, 10 images or YouTube links a day.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. |

Hilarious , but good advice.
MeanGreenStompa wrote:The mistake we are all making (and I've certainly done it) is to assume we have 'rights' here.
We don't, this is private property, this is Yakface's back yard. He liked the folks who mod enough to ask them to mod. I think perhaps in our nice daily lives, we've been seeing too much eviction by popularity on reality tv shows, we are blurring this.
WE don't get a poll every week where we boot off the mod that we don't like much or certain frequent posters who, we feel, need to be ejected. The mods police according to the wishes of the owners of the site on a voluntary basis, they will take on board feedback regarding certain of the dakka membership and reconcile this against warnings issued, previous penalties dealt out and then discuss it between themselves to reach accord.
Personally I have no great issue with it. I've modded myself and it's fairly thankless and labour intensive and like all hobbies people extent into tasks, you have to be careful it doesn't kill your enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Hmmm... not too sure... (A challenge you say!!! This will only make the images much more precise, which may or may not be a bad thing ). I am usually pretty considerate of space in threads, but I just HAD TO drop a few funny bombs in here .

I liked my Watchman avatAr because I could easily identify with the Comedian but the new avatar is the chapter master of the Flesh Tearers. They signify all the bad things concentrated in the Blood Angels and to me that makes them tragic. Life can be tragic at times and gallows humor always makes me laugh. Life can be a thin veneer of morality stretched over a canvas of madness. If we can control our urges then maybe we can have some control. It's the things on life that happen we are not prepared for that affect the most. We try our best to eliminate randomness but it is always there.

Based on my experiences as a mod elsewhere you don't ask the people you like to do the job.
Meanwhile, the mods here do a solid job. Light, but consistent touch. I wouldn't mind seeing a policy for punishing deliberate obtuseness, but that can be a tough one to properly moderate.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I think "almost" would work better than "sort of" for the gallows humor caption.

I totally agree with this plan. There are a handful of posters that seem to delight in "not getting it."
I think that the only real problem with the moderation on dakka is that the Mods have far too little faith in their own ability to make decisions. There seems to be a bit of a "firefighter mentality," where simply putting out the flames is more important than dealing with the high level drama of actually
dealing with the trolls. It's understandable, but a bit counter productive.
The other thing to remember about private PM warnings: users don't see them going out, only going in. When you respond to a long time troll here, and get a PM warning, the first thought is "why am I getting yelled at when this guy says worse stuff every day?" It's what creates the impression, which isn't entirely true, that far from punishing the most notorious trolls, the mods are actually protecting them, by warning those that are too mean to them.
there's also the simple principle that when the people don't see the trials or the punishments, they're not seeing the repercussions of breaking rules. That can lead to more people breaking rules, because they simply don't see anybody getting sanctioned for it.

DakkaDakka is self moderating to a degree that even the most well behaved forums tend to drift away from. The lack of a need for a public pelting ground is a very good sign for the community on the whole... well, many threads become their own mini-pelting grounds... I prefer the watermelon-hammer stance myself, but many prefer a more direct approach... which I refer to on occasion as the banana-staff style, and I think it works quite well. I have been known... on occasion, to implement the more sneaky "Glenn Beck is a tomato" approach, but it's popularity has declined so has my use of it as a conversation tool... of sorts.
My point being that the only salad that can be as diverse as possible is a fruit salad, but on occasion even the best fruit salad has been known to be in keeping with the walnut style of a more traditional salad. Salmon with lemon juice?
Unofficial Glenn Beck quote=
"See what I did there? Neither did I..."
I prefer the system we have now... it is a learning process that some choose to ignore . The boot follows the worst and they fly thus forth into the rest of the web... and stuff

What I find amusing is that this thread is directed at me when personal vendettas can be taken up with a mod or Yakface instead. There's also a very obvious 'Ignore' button, which I'm shocked that more people don't use (especially regarding me).

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

It is?
I thought it was about the YMDC area of the forum existing in a constant state wherein any thread over 2 pages long is heading for a lock due to someone who just can't let it the feth go and has to post his same argument ad infinitum after everyone else's posts until he cries out that he's 'won' due to everyone else just packing up and going home.
I like you cheesey, your an unstable gibbering loon but you're our unstable gibbering loon and very far down the scale of ebil on Dakka IMO.

I just took a look at your contribution to dakka in the considerable time since you created your online persona here, 30ish posts, mostly concerned with 'happening to mention' that you spend several thousand dollaz on GW stuff. I especially liked the line 'I spend more on GW stuff than many of you make in a year'.
Grats, thanks for sharing with the group. Is that the sort of post I was missing way back when? gak on me, guess I really lost out...
