Should the Dakka Dakka Mods take a more firm stance against people trolling these forums?

I for one feel that they should. I wont go into nameing people, but I see the same people day after day getting threads locked because they troll/argue/spam them to death. (Though im sure we all know who these people are)

In a thread not very long ago 3 different mods posted "Play nice" comments in it and the same people still continued to carry on. They eventually locked the thread, and nothing happened to the offenders... Some of the same people then were involved in getting another thread locked not 24 hours later. Again no action was taken. Combine that with the fact that these same people day after day spam the threads and you cant help but wonder why nothing has been done.

This is just one example of many that I could post on here. Im sure im not the only one on these forums that is sick and tired of the trolling. You have people on here that openly ADMIT that they are trolling for the sake of trolling and do it on a daily basis unchecked and even after multiple reports from different people nothing is done about it.

What im asking is this......

Will the Mods as a whole Please take a firmer stance on people who troll these forums? Its getting to the point where in some areas its as bad as 4chan.

Meybe the mods ARE the trolls

Something like a 3 strikes in a week and you get a temp ban... 3rd temp ban = perm ban... something like that, which gives them time to learn, and if not... the boot would be best...

That can be true. The Mods try to be more restrained here. It has the side effect of permitting "trolls" to last longer.

Being Restrained isnt a bad thing, however its when people realise this that they start to walk all over you if you let them.

Which in my eyes is what has happened here on Dakka.

I'm with jp400 on this one.

If they want to do 4chan type stuff, might I suggest they nick off to 4chan?

Here's the prob, except for Malf and Sanchez you turkeys have been reported at least once. I have been reported-and if saintly little old me has been reported...Should you have been banned? How tough do you want us to be?

Reported for what exactly? We have not broken a single rule on here.

I for one feel that the mods need to be abit more firm about it.. However common sense and judgement still come into play.

I for one welcome our new Mod overlords and offer to ban anyone who oppose their right thinking leadership...

Personally, I feel that the Dakka mods are doing a pretty darn good job, and that's reflected in the attitudes of the posters. I mean, let's look at what people call 'trolling' on this forum. It's a good sign for the forum that people cry 'troll' over offences that are more minor, especially since we don't see the major offences that other forums experience. Really, the problem that seems to be at the forefront in this forum isn't actually people posting with the express purposes of angering other posters (which is what trolling, at it's heart is about, intentionally angering the wider community to get a reaction) but the problem most often commented on is posters getting too heated about a debate and moving towards personal attacks and continual posting. That's not trolling on the levels that other forums see.

In summary, the dakka mods are doing a great job, and if you think things are bad here, check out the rest of the internet. At least no one here is rickrolling you.

I respectfully Disagree with you.

I am apart of a few different forums around the net and people here Do troll and are VERY open about it.

People here also will drag a argument out over several pages cause they will not refuse to admit they are wrong or simply walk away.

Spam also has been a big problem on here, and even after Yak posted plain as day rules, certain people still violated them for a good while after that.

Granted it is better now then it was a month ago, but thats cause some people havent been around much during that timeframe.

I have to agree that the mods are working. Even though I haven't got any private warnings that "play nice" post is usually enough to get me out of my trolling attitude.

Personally I'm afraid that someday a van will pull up and a bunch of guys wearing dakka dakka shirts will take me away, hopefully somewhere fun, but more than likely not.

I guess it depends on the topic, the kind of trolling/spamming/flaming, and of course the mod's mood.

The flip side is the moderators also get congratulated on their light touch.

Some users comment on how other forums ban people for quite trivial offences, and say they like Dakka because that doesn't happen here.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.

I can't even imagine how much of a hosebag you would have to be to actually get BANNED from www.dakkadakka.com.

This is also true KillKrazy. However kindness is often taken for weakness and a firm hand is often needed to restore balance.

Plus common sense goes a very long way when it comes to looking at users and going "Ok, this guy is just trolling for the sake of trolling" and "Ok, this guy is just trying to argue his point in a logical mannor."

We have the "!" buttons for a reason. This place has its share of donkey-caves but for the most part they tend to stay here, in the GBS of Dakka. As long as they stay there it should be okay.

Yes we do Brookm, and im sure they get used quite often.

I myself have used it and seen results.. but on that note ive also used it (As have others from what I hear) and not seen results.

However that being said that isnt what is being discussed here atm.

Since we are going for more strict mods here, can we do away with a few of the somewhat unstable mods please?
No offence, but a few mods on here are just a waste of time.

I will agree with you that a couple of the mods on here need to go, however the hard part is judgeing/proveing who is and isnt worthy to stick around and mod.

That reason right there is why on that front nothing will change.

Malf may be somewhat weird, but he is fine too

I do have reasons aswell, not just a random thing here.
Just mainly based on thier actions over the time ive spent on here and thier "cant be fethed" attitudes.

The mistake we are all making (and I've certainly done it) is to assume we have 'rights' here.

We don't, this is private property, this is Yakface's back yard. He liked the folks who mod enough to ask them to mod. I think perhaps in our nice daily lives, we've been seeing too much eviction by popularity on reality tv shows, we are blurring this.

WE don't get a poll every week where we boot off the mod that we don't like much or certain frequent posters who, we feel, need to be ejected. The mods police according to the wishes of the owners of the site on a voluntary basis, they will take on board feedback regarding certain of the dakka membership and reconcile this against warnings issued, previous penalties dealt out and then discuss it between themselves to reach accord.

Personally I have no great issue with it. I've modded myself and it's fairly thankless and labour intensive and like all hobbies people extent into tasks, you have to be careful it doesn't kill your enthusiasm for the subject matter.

So it's like being a police officer. A thankless job that really sucks.

To change that I would like to thank all of the mods on dakka dakka and especially frazzled for modding the most dangerous part of dakka, the OT forum. May God watch his soul.
