And maybe by the time they get around to it, their current fascination with special characters will be over, and we can get some proper HQ's without having 8 new special characters.

Amen!

HQ's with love not equally distributed is heresy.

My 7 Cents.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

As long as you're fine with Special Characters more as Archetypes I don't really have a problem with it. We get some cool models and usually powerful but fun rules.

Chaos could be well represented in 3 codices:

Codex: Chaos Daemons (add alliance rules and you're golden)
Codex: Lost and the Damned (Chaos guard)
and Codex: Legions. (Cult marines, cult HQs, obliterator cults, 9 vindicators!)

With alliance rules for all of them, so that an iron warriors army would consist of:

Iron Warriors HQs from Codex: Legions that leChaos Space marinests you trade FOC slots for heavy support.
Iron Warriors Troops from Codex: Legions
Lost and the Damned artillery
Lost and the Damned cultists

And an alpha legion force might consist of

Alpha Legion HQ from Codex: Legions, that maybe gives troops units stealth or infiltrate.
Alpha Legion Troops from Codex: Legions
LATD cultists

Bad.

I don't play Chaos but it is the primary army of my primary opponent so I've been on the other side of the table many times. Were there problems with the previous codex? Of course. Daemon Bomb I thought was too much and there were wargear combinations that were very over the top.

So it did need some fixing, but I feel that GW went too far and streamlined it too much. They did the same thing with the Dark Angel codex. It's my hope that these will be an exception. When you look at more recent work it appears that GW has figured out they trimmed too much.

Oh the joy of playing against the same list every...single...game... I dont even play chaos and I HATE the codex. Yeah old chaos had many broken builds, but atleast it was interesting. THe new dex is bad in the same way as the new ork dex. very limited competitive builds, a few very op units, lots of awesome fluff units being total suck... aka, flash gitz, cultists, fallen, original deamons, etc

Armies I play:
-5000 pts
-2500 pts
Mechanicus -1850 pts

This is an insult to the Ork Codex. I can come up with at least three power builds and all play very, very different. Kan Walls w/KFF Mek, Nob Bikers, Loota Spam with Shoota Boyz Mobs... all very different armies.

Chaos has one power build. Dual Lash HQ with Wings and Dual PM squads in Rhinos plus Dual Berzerkers in Rhinos. Anything else is variations on that theme.

otherwise the shades of grey would consume us all I imagine.

Or would you have preferred.

1) Best Codex GW has made
2) Good Codex and better than last version
3) Good Codex and same as last version
4) Good codex but worse than last version
5) Bad Codex yet still better than the last
6) Bad Codex but the same old swill for Chaos
7) Bad Codex and worse than than the last one
8) An abomination, and all who disagree need to write a thesis on why they are so stupid
9) I can't answer, the pain... it's just too much...

Or something like that.

All of the other Chaos discussions are locked, so naturally, this picks up the slack.

I wonder if Dakka wouldn't be better served having a permanent thread for this topic in Survivor Games & Chain Fiction?

You know, reading over all the arguments, I'm wondering what the point of this is.

It's not that your guys arguments aren't valid, they are, I'm with you and I can see the logic behind them....

they just don't seem necessary....
