Well, for me Hordes/Warmachine was way more attractive because there is no flagship faction to suck up all the development time, so I knew my faction would always get some attention. Sitting waiting with that terrible 3rd edition codex for my Orks for that long really pissed me off. And what pissed me off even more were the huge holes in the model range while space marines went through multiple redundancies of bald screaming characters and specialist chapter kits.

The 5th ed ork dex is he only ork thing I've ever purchased thanks to the love it got on dakka--I cannot imaging playing them. I have the last Tyranid one, too, and will likely get the new one although am not likely to do anything more than read about them. (For context, however, the only two . . . er, current codi I haven't bought are CD and DE.)
Also, Fenris Wolves.

I'd guess that some of the more recent ork "players" will fall off,but there has been (for as long as I recall) a goodish number of "core" Ork players who will continue with their "WAAGH".
As for the upcoming nidz release,I'm sure it (as other armies have) will atract those interested as well as the "WOW!,look at THAT!!" crowd.

No wolves?
The old ork codex was missing:
-Skarboyz, 'Ard Boyz, squigs, warbike nobs, rokkit launcha and big shoota options for Warbuggies (still waiting GW), rokkit launchers for trukks (also still waiting), Flash Gits (still waiting), Cyborks, Battlewagon (that was huge, it's our main tank.), Lootas, Kommandos (until the campaign, but they were missing for years), Boss Snikrot, Boss Zagstrukk, Nazdreg. Also, the only warboss with a power klaw for ages was Ghaz, and he's still the only Mega Armoured Warboss available. And I think there were a couple of other things, but we'll leave it there because I don't have my old book.
At least you can use Warhammer Fantasy wolves or Lotr Wargs to stand in. The situation for orks was a lot worse. I'm happy with the way things are now, but for a long time every time I saw a new set of space marine veterans I wanted to spit.

Actually here's a story I haven't put on Dakka yet, but I feel is valid to this thread ^^
We amy all remember a bit back when BL and GW held the Planetstrike Competition, essentially a short story comp were the point was to write a short 40K story about a massive, planet killing invasion.
"Huzzah" says I, "a chance to prove my writing chops!"
So I penned a story I am proudest of, a story of Orks. The basic premise was a world had been destroyed by the Inquisition due to a greenskin taint, and it constantly flitted between the lead Inquisitors investigation and the actual events. Essentially it was a fairly pro-ork story, and to all who read it very funny but totally in line with the 40K theme.
I entered it, unusually quite confident. What followed was the usual waiting and fretting that myself and BL have been through sadly many times. However this time I got a response.
Arriving in a crisp envelope was a message from BL.
"Huzzah" says I "my time has come!"
My time however, had not come. It was one of those 'runner up' letters, stating they apparently 'loved the story' but it 'wasn't what they were looking for'
Eventually the book comes out, and I decide to purchase it. Lo and Behold, chock-a-block with Space Marine stories...
*sigh*

@Da Boss: Well, I didn't list the characters. I guess those can just be converted. Anywho, no doubt SW had less missing units since nearly all their stuff is/was just converted SM stuff. But wolves, one of the things that makes SW the most different from vanilla mahreins, is missing--and wargs look gak next to Canis.

Agreed, they need to release a big wolf like Canis.
Also, SW are the variant chapter I have the least issue with, to be honest.

Sinister Brain wrote:The problem with letting other races (Necron and DE specifically) rot the way GW has, is it starts a vicious cycle. The models suck and/or the codex needs updating so people don't buy them. Thus they don't sell so GW ignores them, so people see no updates or anything to entice them so they don't buy them, so gw doesn't update them... ad nauseam.
And there you have the root of the problem.

I play SM but I'm not happy with the love, mainly because my friends play Orks, Nids, Tau and Necrons and complain that I get all the new stuff. Spread the love GW!

I don't think Space Marines get too much love, in fact I think it's more the case that Ultramarines get too much damn love!!!
Considering they started out as just a third founding Chapter who inhereted the majority of it's founding Chapters kit, they've certainly come damn far, I mean do we even need to acknowledge any other Chapter any more, especially following the new Smurf game and Movie!!!
From 2nd edition onwards if you wanted to play Space Marines but didn't want to play the Angels of Death (Blood Angels/Dark Angels) or the Space Wolves you basically bought Codex Ultramarines, I mean that was it's name in 2nd edtion and considering the focus on them with Special Characters, painting sections and page after page of pictures in the two most recent "Codex Space Marines..." you can't help but wonder who's really getting all the love.
I mean the poor Iron Hands in particular who got treated second class to the Crimson Fists, including the fluff section where they talked about the various Chapters and the Crimson Fists got the boxout instead, but jeez the Ultramarines had a whole bunch of Special Characters whilst the other First Founding Chapters only had one each, surely the Ultramarines could have at least spared that Tank Commander for the Iron Hands.
Seriously why can't the Tyranids go back for another try and wipe them out as well as they did with the Squats!!!
As for all the other books that are not getting any love, I'm a long time SM (w/ WH&DH), Ork, CSM, and DE player and I'd love nothing more for the remaining four 3rd edition Codices to be the next updated, and for all those in the Tau and CSM camps I say that you guys are still in a better position that those Codices so stop stuggesting that these two need high priority. CSM has had a new Codex every edition, technically they got two seperate ones this edition, neither of which are great but I find both very playable, fluff be damned. As for the Tau, you've already had two Codices, which is impressive considering how long the army's been around, the Necrons were more affected by 5th edtion and they've only really ever had one Codex, so they should get a second one first. Concluding this part of my rant I'll just add that I think it's unfair that Nids are getting a new Codex next as they, like the CSM have had one for every edition so far minus the current one.
Anywho I only live in hope that when the Nids Codex does come out that it's filled with a dozen pages of fluff about wiping out the Ultramarines... hey a man can dream can't he?!?
Cheers
