I'd be taking a look at the Polemos Napoleonics, produced by Baccus 6mm - both because they're a local firm, and because I would, at some stage, like to get into historicals to some degree.

For ~£73 (outside of the EU), you get the following:

* 1 x Polemos Napoleonic Ruleset (Second edition).
* 1 x Polemos British Army Starter Pack.
* 1 x Polemos French Army Starter Pack.
* 2 Sets of pre-cut bases.
* 1 x British flag sheet
* 1 x French flag sheet
* 1 x Painting guide for British and French armies
* 2 x Farm buildings and plinths.
* 1 x Large House and Plinth

If we assume 1806-1812, the army starter packs seem to include:

British
# 10 Units of Foot, each of 24 figures
# 6 Units of Heavy Cavalry, each of 9 figures
# 3 Units of Light Dragoons, each of 9 figures
# 3 Units of Hussars, each of 9 figures
# 4 Artillery pieces
# 3 Command Bases

French
# 10 Units of Foot, each of 24 figures
# 4 Units of Cuirassiers, each of 9 figures
# 4 Units of Dragoons, each of 9 figures
# 2 Unitss of Hussars, each of 9 figures
# 2 Units of Chasseurs, each of 9 figures
# 4 Artillery pieces
# 3 Command strips

Not bad, to my mind.

On the topic of Warlord, $100 dollars can set you up with the rules (which contains army rosters for all of the major factions) as well as two small forces. The rules are twenty dollars, so that would leave you with forty dollars per army. That's enough to get a leader, four or five grunts, and a small monster. I don't know if I'd reccomend starting with $100 though; you could do it, but starting with say $150 would work better. On the pluss side, the online community (found on Reaper's website) is fairly strong, and Reaper has a free army builder on their site.

Best game that uses miniatures for under $100?

Since it doesnt specifically say a wargame, I have a few good one board game suggestions:

Cave Troll $20-$30 depending on where you shop

Claustrophobia $40-$65 (keep an eye on this Space Hulk in fantasy land game, I think its going to be a fad, if not be really hot for a long time)

*ahem*....Space Hulk is technically under $100 and its..okay I guess.

War of the Ring about $50ish

Anima Tactics price varies depending on how much you buy (like all wargames) but you can get two very nice factions for under way below $100. Plus, its also a wargame. Very underrated at that.

Here are pics of some of my Baccus 6mm Russian army.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-299-1139_6mm%20Russian%20Napoleonic.html

These are based up for the Marechal de l'Empire rules which are for big battles, the bases are 60mm square. The other rules are the General de Division which use a base 60mm wide by 30mm deep. Both sets of rules are in the same book. You can play Marechal with General bases by just putting two bases into a single unit.

If you want to get into games under $100, play General. If you like it you can move up to big games with Marechal later.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Hell, you even have money left over for Beer and Munchies.

My thoughts exactly. Any Two Hour Wargames ruleset easily meets this. I especially recommend Chain Reaction. Free rules and you can use existing miniatures if you want! Total price? $0

Infinity is another good suggestion. But get lots of terrain!

AT-43 is a solid gamey game, but seems to be dying a slow death (much like Rackham in general, unfortunately).

StarGrunt2 (15mm - 25 mm sci-fi combat - primarily infantry instead of vehicle heavy), Dirtside 2 (micro armor sci-fi) and Full Thrust (spaceship combat) are all free downloads of great games. I printed out Dirtside 2 for around $7 with a coil binding and plastic covers at the local print shop.

That leaves you $90 for minis. If you go 15mm, you can easily field nice sized forces. Even in 25-32mm figures, you could buy a couple of decent sized forces. If you want micro armor (for DS2, for example), you can get a platoon of tanks/APCs for around $10/platoon. Spaceships are very plentiful and fleets are reasonably priced from various companies, too.

ya im gunna second some of the things mentioned with my best (as 'best' as an opinion of mine can be lol) suggestions for you...
not granted i havent played any of these too extensively, but ive looked into them all myself and heard alot from people who have...

1: AT-43 - as an alternative game, you dont gotta spend days painting to have a fun, good looking game...
2: Monsterpocalypse - awesome and fun and monsters blowing gak up... what else do you need...?
3: Malifaux - a change from your standard mini gaming with nice models and relatively low model count needed for good games...

Second the recommendation for various GZG games. You can buy the rules used for cheap, or print for free, and the "official" figures are cheap. Better, they are all "generic" in the sense that 90% of what you can buy from what ever company can be made to fit the rules, so with a little work you can have your IG fight Copplestone Neo-Soviets, or epic tanks fight Brigade Miniatures tanks. Cherry picking your favorite miniature lines to make your forces is a nice feeling after being in the "GW Hobby".

+1 on Malifaux and Warlord. And Warmachine.

Not sure if anyone mentioned Legends of the Old West (though I did see Gutshot!). Between rules and figs you still come under $100.

The various Rattrap games (Gloire! .45 Adventure, Fantastic Worlds, etc.)--rules themselves are inexpensive and then you just need to find the figs themselves (and there's a lot of nice, cheap AND good options out there for these games).

Pretty much any of the decent skirmish games out there. And there are plenty of free rules out there (No Quarter, No Limits, Chain Reaction) that are excellent and allow you to use figs you already have. So there.

+1 All Things Zombie.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

If you stick to skirmish scale games -- which only need 5-20 figures per side -- it will never cost too much.

The side benefit of spending less on figures is spending less time on painting -- which can change into more time on building nice terrain pieces.

Lots of miniatures, lots of fun.

I also strongly second getting Battletech though Battletech is an outdated games stystem , its great if you are already into it, via old Battletech or any version of Mechwarrior. If you are completely new to the franchise look elsewhere, nostalgia rather than gameplay bulks out the appeal.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I'm suprised nobody's actually mentioned necromunda, especially since with a little bit of light conversion work, you can make a gang out of IG plastics pretty easy, and for much cheaper than the metal models they use....

That, and the rulebook is free through GW's specialist Games website.

Anima Tactics. It's an amazing game and the starters don't suck by any means. You can download all the rules for free, and at $10 to $12 a model with 6 models being a tournament army, it's a great value too. There are some big minis that are up to $30 but are by no means necessary to play, and you can stay competitive easily without touching them. I recommend getting 3 models a side to start with. PM with any questions!

Any Clix games are cheap because Wizkids is no longer in business as of October 2008 (I think)...other companies are trying to buy out the rights to their products but I guess Mr. Weisman is just too greedy to let go...

Did anyone mention Full Thrust? I forget the name of the company, but you can get all their books for free in pdf now.

Full Thrust is the Space version of space ships, they also have versions for tanks, intintry like 40K and a few others.

You make your on ships if you wanted, and I find it very fun. Just google Full Thrust and you should find thier home site.

Again, it's free now, so you can't go wrong. You can buy thier mini's or use others.

Negotiations are in limbo. D6G is pushing for the release of the Heroclix lines. Wizkids is non-responsive. They did release the Thor's Chariot model but no futher releases as yet. I heard there were 3 offers as soon as Wizkids stopped production in 2008. BTW, I used to compete in the world championships for 2 straight years before they killed Mageknight.

Back on topic, I like the Malifaux and Warmachine BUT I do not like metal models. I prefer plastics. I know Warmachine is getting into plastics but not enough for me to jump on the WM bandwagon. I am serioursly looking at Mantic Games BUT they only have the Undead (to be released) and Elves released. Also, has anyone played the game? Is it something that will grow?

@Warlord Imp: If your dislike of metal models started with the GW metals like myself, then I'd be happy to mention that most other game companies have MUCH better metals.

And I'd also say Malifaux, I think it's the perfect game for this. It's also awesome in every way. A small warning though, some masters require a steep learning curve, while others are very straight forward, don't mistake it for some being over powered and under powered.
