I have Mordheim & BFG, and think both of those are excellent. OTOH, DnD minis, Star Wars minis, and Clix-related stuff has no interest for me. I've looked at AT-43, but it didn't quite catch my fancy.

So far, I like Infinity and Malifaux as small games with nice minis. For not a lot of cash, either of these could good little side games to play. They remind me of Warmachine way back when it was first released many, many moons ago.

If it were your $100, what would you guys be buying?

If it were MY $100?

I'd be starting Infinity, just like I currently am

Cool backstory, cool armies, cool models. It looks like it'll be terrain heavy and focused mostly in that regards...but so what? Terrain's easy.

Not sure if this fits, but someone put DnD so this can't be way off base.

BUT for $34.97 from the WarStore

You can get it and its expansion, Growing Hunger ($34.99 on Amazon), for under $100

Used to be my favorite game till my group played it too many times.

Here's the Board Game Geek link

Everyone should check it out, I guarantee it'll get on the table a lot

Since there have been several boardgame suggestions and even D&D qua RPG, I just want to clarify: are we only talking miniatures games or any type of game that might involve miniatures? Because if this is open to board games, that's a whole other can or worms.

Notionally, I was thinking to limit to minis games, rather than board games.

If I had wanted board games, I'd be at BGG or another BG site.

Just go with AT-43 . You can use them for IG veteran if you get bored.

I strongly recommend following your gut on AT-43. I pushed my reservations aside and ended up very disappointed. That was when it first came out (no Red Blok at that time, much less corporate zombies) but every time I see Karmans I know I'm not missing anything.

Any 10mm historical (Warmaster Ancients, Blitzkrieg Commander for example) should come in less than that. Or DBA will easily.

Naval historicals can be cheap too, especially Trafalgar as your fleet won't stretch much over 10 vessels.

At this stage, since I have all my GW and PP stuff, I'd have a look at Warcanto's stuff or get into a historical, probably using the plastics from wargames factory or warlord.

Sticking with scifi? AT-43 and Infinity are my suggestions as well.

If you're open for other genres...

Gutshot!
Arcane Legions
Malifaux
Warlord

There are quite a bit of mini games out there that can be played for around $100 or less.

Monsterpocalypse. PP is even offering a huge 2-player starter deal right now for $50+shipping that would get you everything you need for casual play.

Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

Flames of War Open Fire! plus a blister of infantry for each side, gives you enough for basic games and whatnot.

Aeronautica Imperialis can also be played for under $100,-- or whatever, just get the main book, three or four packs of fighters and you can play basic games.

Excellent game, looks very simple but is surprisingly complex. Really appeals to the Godzilla fan in me

Best rule book for skirmish gaming ever is 5 usd...

Songs of Blades and heroes ( they have scifi themed stuff also)

Miniatures... heres the kicker you can use what you want from who you want... you can even pick scales 28mm or 15mm.

You will need to make 3 measuring sticks and some dices... thats about it.

The 95usd you saved you can send them this way.

I think the current box set is being phased out for the 25th Aniiversary version due out in the 1st Q 2010. It will include 2 more higher quality minis in it.

Although no Battletech box has had 30 minis in it. The current version has 24, the old 3rd Edition had 14 (I think), and CityTech had 16.

I already have 5k+ pts of IG, with good number of IG models. I don't need more IG that don't match my existing IG.

Thanks for the suggestions outside the SF/fantasy arene, tho I think I'm going to limit my historicals to FoW.

I have Flames, but I suppose I could add a FoW starter box to the pile...

AI doesnt seem as rich as some of the other suggestions (I'm specificially thinking of Infinity and Malifaux), Also, I'm not sure how good it is as a pseudo-historical dogfighting game. Can you comment?

Gutshot! (Hawleg Productions)
PROS: It's a western theme- a fun departure from sci-fi and fantasy. Quick and easy rules you can either have 2 players play 2 small groups of minis or have 10 players play 1 mini each (which is a blast!).
CONS: It's a western theme so not many people will like the genre. It's similar to Infinity that it NEEDS terrain.

Arcane Legions (Wells Expeditions)
PROS: IMO has some really great game mechanics, some of which I wish the other games I play had(especially Warhammer fantasy). If you are a Warhammer player, you should at least try it. A 2-player starter set will only run you $35.
CONS: There are 3 big ones: 1) The minis aren't that great. Quality is definitely not up to par with the rest of the pack. 2) There are only 3 factions. 3) The fact it is labeled as a collectible game hurts it. People quickly push it away (like myself at first) as soon as you see/hear 'collectible'. But, if buy the starter set and a bundle set (brick of 8 boosters; do not buy individual boosters) you are guaranteed an entire army set.

Malifaux (Wyrd)
PROS: Instead of using dice, it has a unique gameplay with fate cards. Small faction boxes = happy wallet <which, in turn, could lead to> small faction boxes = multiple faction purchases. Steampuck type theme.
CONS: The fate cards is quite different and might throw people off especially if they are set in their dice ways. People might not like the steampunk theme and the stylized minis.

Warlord (Reaper)
PROS: Fairly easy skirmish rules and fun, quick games. If you live in the U.S. the minis are really inexpensive not to mention metal.
CONS: The minis are a mixed bag due to dealing with different sculptors although since the recent 2nd edition release, their minis have been improving for the most part. I have a lupine faction and mainly consists of Rackham's Wolfen mini.

Gutshot!, Arcane Legions, and Malifaux were reviewed on the D6 Generation podcast. Pretty helpful and insightful review.

I had Heroscape, and it wasn't bad, but the problem for me was that Heroscape was too much wanting to be like 40k / Nec / Mord / SBG / WM, which I already have plenty of.

As far as boardgames go, I like Battlelore very much and might suggest that to you guys.

Secrets of the Third Reich.

Incursion.

Superfigs.

Pulp City.

Spinespur.

Blue Moon has a few neat games in the Chaos in Carpathea, Chronos, and London themes, as well as some incident based horror games. NOW they has a few good loads of zombies, as well.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

If you like the superhero genre for skirmish, I would second the suggestion for SuperSystem (Superfigs are the models). For 10.95 USD, you can own the pdf of the rules, the official Superfigs line of figs have been put into a freebie pdf (so you don't have to make up your heroes/villains if you don't want to), and you still have 85+ dollars to buy your team(s) of Supers. Or you can use whatever you have around already, saving you even more!

I use a mix of figures from over a dozen lines, and we generally build our teams around 8 models, so you'd have plenty of cash to purchase what you wanted...

Other than that, I'm currently painting up my second Malifaux crew.

Grot, I wouldn't actually put Secrets of the Third Reich in the list of "under $100 USD".

You can get 'starter sets' that contain models for specific scenarios fairly cheap from West Wind(Brainwurst! and Sniper! are favorites, personally) but you'll still end up paying a decent amount for an actual army for both sides.
