What surprises me the most is that GW had the nerve to ask him to re-play the game and risk losing just because his models weren't brand spankin' new.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Hmm. I enjoyed reading the OP and the replies where people actually tried to guess. Then I slogged through two more pages, hoping for some answers.

For the love of all that is holy, re-rail this thread by posting some answers!

I thought this was supposed to be a fun game thread! not an exploration into how much of an @$$ we can be to each-other!

Blimey, what nonsense is appearing in this thread

What advantage is there in Warhammer Fantasy for having smaller models? Again, if he based them incorrectly, but really anything else and it makes no sense, they aren't hiding behind rubble with bolter rounds shot at them!

As for the original guesses, the only thing I have to add is the savage orcs....

It's pretty obvious those horrid figures are from Black Tree Designs.

I cannot stand how many people say they are as good Citadel's early sculpts. All the figures they had which were obviously designed to fit in with Warhammer had no character to them at all. Yes, I do own some, too! Surprised to see they still have all the figures I didn't like from them some ten years ago on range (the Skaven rip-offs were the most commonly cited as being just as good proxys, yuck!)

You know the easiest way to not have to worry about whether your miniatures are "tourney legal"?

Don't play in tournaments. tournaments are terrible.

But there comes a point where you have to actually make concessions and update your collection rather than be a complete spanker and insist on using outdated and fairly unrecognizable miniatures. ESPECIALLY in tournaments.

I absolutely disagree. I've got hunderds of RT-era IG, I see no reason to 'update' them with new models. (Altho I'm doing the tanks just cause I like the newer models). And GW staffers, whether in the local stores or in the numerous GTs I've used them in, have never had a problem with them. I use GW, Citadel, Iron Claw models from Talisman, 40K, Fantasy, Necromunda, etc etc, in my IG army, and I've gotten nothing but positive comments from any GW store employee, US GT staffer or UK GW guest that has seen it. They LIKE seeing the older models, the eggs-on-legs sentinels, the over-the-shoulder heavy weapons, etc etc.

As for your bad tourney experience, I'm willing to bet that was not a GW US HQ decision, but rather a decision made by one individual, the rep or whoever it was that gave you the support. And if you had pushed it up the chain he would have been told to handle it differently. Four years ago, I was the head judge at the Baltimore Games Day tournies, so I think I'm pretty familiar with the policies that were in place at the time.
I've attended 20+ US GTs. In that time, I've seen Squats 'count as' Marines, Chaos Marines, IG, and Orks. And GW had no problem with it. My second IG army is Lizardmen with turtle shell tanks, and yes, I've used it in the US GTs, again, no problems and nothing but favorable comments from GW staff. My point is, while you may run into individuals or a store that gets difficult about older models, GW policy is that they are as legit as current models. And on the one occasion where a local store here did tell someone that their older models couldn't be used, a quick phone call to GW US HQ took care of that.

I agree with Dele , and John , some people are twisting the sentences and turning it into something else.

Whether its deliberate or not im not to judge , but i see it all too often.

Um, for a little while there, GW did up to 4 or 5 GTs per year.

Some people travel to different places to participate as well.

Yepper. I've played in GW US GTs in Baltimore (home area, so almost all of these since the first one in 1997, missed two while stationed in Korea), Charlotte NC, Boston, Dallas, Las Vegas, Chicago, Colombus OH, and even been to the Canadain GT in Toronto. Most in one year was four, IIRC. In addition to attending and playing, I usually helped with setup, registration, and teardown (I'm a former Outrider).
