I almost want to petition GW to give Heroquest or Warhammer Quest the Space Hulk treatment.
I always read about how Space Hulk was some 40k enthusiasts gateway into their 40k wargaming hobby, well Hero Quest was the same for me, just with WHFB. I've spent thousands of dollars on WHFB/40k because of Hero Quest. And it was a completely unasked for, unexpected X-mas present from my parents, many many years ago!

Won't happen.
The Advanced versions, possibly, since those were actually done by GW. But they don't own the original games.

Love the game
Had it back in college and use play the out of it with my buds. Lost my copy over the years though.
Recently a member of my D&D group brought his copy to play when we finished the adventure a little early and wow, I forgot what a blast is is!
So, I'm on ebay that night in the bidding wars. My copy was delivered 2 days ago
Wait, what? there are expansions?

What's worse is that there were non-US retail expansions.
Good luck finding them without a loan.

Yeah, had the game and several of the expansions years ago. As time went by the cardboard and paper parts got scattered to the winds and the models scavenged for D&D play. Kicking myself over it now.

I've dug my copy out and am painting up the figures. Ill post pictures in time if the thread is still going, I'm going to do a simple colour scheme and gloss varnish them for a nice finish.

As promised I've pretty much finished the main heroes and will gloss varnish them at some other time. I'm currently working on the evil wizard but don't really know what to do with the chaos warriors.

Cheers! I quite like the elf too but my favourite is the Dwarf, he's got a lovely gritty realistic feel to him with his maroon, brown and gold colours. I knew from the start exactly what colours I wanted him to be and he's come out as planned. The others I worked out as I went along. They really do look a lot better in real life, the barbarian especially, I should have a proper set up for photographing miniatures.
As plastics go I suppose they are good for their age. There's almost no undercut on most of them though, the barbarian is especially awkward so you have to be rather creative when shading. This is my worry about the chaos warriors, they are very rounded in places and have no real detail or cracks to work with. I don't want them to be all black or red, though that would be very fitting for the early 1990s, I think I'll paint each of the four as a different chaos god, one will be green/brown, and another pink/black and I suppose the Teeenzch one will be rather like the wizard here. That might look quite groovy.

On the topic of dungeon crawls similar to heroquest, has anyone ever tried the D&D version of it?
Dungeons & Dragons: The Fantasy Adventure Board Game
The game was only ever released in Europe and has had some decent reviews. I guess Paizo had bought out the remaining english language stock late 2006 for sale in the U.S. but it has never seen an actual release here for some reason. Likely to do with competing with WotC's own collectible miniatures game I'd hazard to guess.
I bought the game and all of its expansions in brand new condition on ebay last night for a little over $100 based on solely on this humorous review:
Killing People And Taking Their Stuff Is AWESOME
(if you like this guys writing style and enjoy board games, you can read more of his hilarious reviews on his game review blog Drake's Flames. They are at least a fun read when bored.)
I have seen some ire directed at it that Heroquest is a better game, and that this is a heroquest ripoff. Since heroquest so blatantly ripped off D&D, it seems to me that this game is the logical conclusion of light dungeon crawl games in the heroquest vein.
I am sure you european dakka members are aware of this game but I am curious as to what everyone thinks about it that has tried it.
The reason why I bring this up in this thread is that if nothing else, it is a hell of a lot easier to get this game on ebay and for a much cheaper price since it has only been out of print for 6-7 years and not 15-20 like heroquest.

That game and its expansions were mass dumped in cheap shops here in the UK. We have a chain of shops called "The Works" which mainly take remaindered books but which also end up with art materials, toys and sometimes model kits. Recently they have had a large number of the Wizkids Pirates games and the packs were as little as 50p each. The D&D games were about last summer, I kick myself for not getting the main game as it was only £10, they had the expansions of which I bought one for £5 simply out of curiosity. The only drawback is that the miniatures are soft plastic which makes painting tricky.

Hmmm... Is it soft plastic like mageknight and all those other prepainted minis? Or are they just softer than the typical heroquest/ GW plastic fig?
For me this seems like a game that is right up my alley, as my GF wanted me to buy Descent to play but the game takes too long to resolve. She likes dungeon crawls as she is a fan of D&D video games such as baldurs gate, etc. So hopefully this will satisfy the board gaming dungeon crawl urge for D&D than Claustrophobia has been (Great game, but the theme is a bit lacking).
Great paint jobs on the Heroquest figs by the way. Good luck with the rest of those. I found it quite hard to paint a lot of those figs due to lack of detail.

They are soft polythene like the mageknight figures, not styrene like regular model kits, GW and heroquest. Paint tend to flake off and and you can't glue them with regular plastic cement, superglue might work. Polythene figures are sometimes painted by putting a thin layer of PVA glue over the model as an undercoat, it gives a slightly stretchy surface for the paint to adhere to, but it's still not great.

Here's another Heroquest like game - Darkworld. This was a game where you had to travel through 9 square rooms fighting monsters along the way. The monsters had a variable number of points under their bases which counted as a kind of score and many had an item that clipped to the base that a character could keep. It was usally a potion or something. The heroes had detachable weapons, because they started out with a plain sword or axe but there were treasure chests along the way with had chrome plated weapons, and a character getting these could swap their old weapon for the more powerful one. The second half of the board had a huge 3D platform that the characters would have to climb up to meet the final bad guy, an evil wizard called Korak who had a bit of a snake motif going. The order in which the players had their turns each round was random, you had a device with coloured balls to shake and the order in which they came to rest was the order the players went. I think it was ok, and the figures were hard plastic which was nice. But it was a bit flawed I suppose and not as variable with the repeat gaming value of regular Heroquest. It had a couple of expansions, or seperate games entirely, that could in theory be bolted together to make one huge board, but I never saw these. link - http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/31/dark-world

Boy, that was a horrible game in comparison to other light dungeon crawls like heroquest, but it was fun for a couple plays.

Yerp. My copy is sitting right next to my pile of HeroQuest boxes and my ancient copy of BattleMasters. Dark World did have some decent figures in it. The game could have been far worse.

Here's a couple more for your enjoyment. The Slannesh one was a near disaster, tried to use washes and stuff over the pink and it looked awful, managed to recover it...just. Not my finest figure but ok for the tabletop standard I'm aiming for. The Nurgle one is my favourite.
