I am not a regular, so let me be frank: I am not particularly worried if this comment lands me in trouble or not.

Look, I WANT to like dakka dakka. I miss HMBC's posts on the true path of 4th ed guard. But as outsider, well, it (meaning the forums posts here) just doesn't seem... particularly exceptional. It's not bad, mind you, it's just not anything that will change my game.

Really, at one point I was reading the army list subforum constantly for a few months. The silliness of that forum once caused me to play freakin' Ninja Tau, quite possibly one of the most ineffectual strategies out there.

I am told that Gwar, HMBC, and yes, Stelek (is this taboo to mention?) get in hot water to varying degrees (and 3 people on this forum who I note only find memorable, but INSIGHTFUL - and you give them a hard time??), and then some wacky guy in army building tells me how awesome his melta/flamer crisis suits are and how terribad kroot are..., and I am to believe the claims by some dakkites that they "call a spade a spade"? No, I don't believe you do. You're just a community, an fine community, and that's great - but from my perspective, dakka dakka didn't appear (when I last posted) to be any sort of repository of tactical genius that some are claiming it is. When I last posted frequently there was still quite a bit of bad advice out there.

This is particularly damning when I saw people claim orkz were super awesome and tau were really bad. (I don't think I've ever felt 'threatened' by a ork player to this day on tabletop, which says something about how well that theory translated into gameplay) As a tau player, I saw my game improve only marginally because of advice from dakka dakka. My loss record was so high at one point I wanted to quit the hobby - driving 45 minutes to get tabled in 30 minutes will do that to you. The best advice I ever got tactically came from OUTSIDE dakka dakka, and as noted above, some advice from dakka caused more trouble than help.

I'll read up on the army list section sometime soon to see if things have changed significantly since I was last on (a few months ago). However, at first glance, I notice that the quality has gone up. I also notice a lot of lists and/or tactics copy-pasted in whole or part from YTTH. The irony is not lost on me.

@Milquetoast: I'll agree with you on that one. I like Dakka because it's a nice and relaxed place to dick around and shoot the gak about 40K. I do NOT come here for tactical advise. There are a few posters that seem to have their wits about them, but for the most part, it's a giant mountain of drivel when it comes to actual tactical discussions, and most of the army lists are so half-assedly thrown together, that I wonder if the person if the person ever played a wargame before, or even read the rulebook. Of course, I realize the latter thought is foolish, since of course they haven't read the rulebook.

But it's pretty much the same everywhere.

Hiding in a dark alley with a sharp knife!

Ah the old Warseer vs. Dakka debate. I've never chimed in on this topic and as I have a few extra minutes I'll do so.

I'm an occasional poster at both sites and in the last couple of years I've come to prefer Dakka.

As others have pointed out, the moderation here on Dakka is more permissive than exists at Warseer. While they are light years ahead of what they had when the site was known as Portent, as a whole the 'mod staff at Warseer are petty and unprofessional in their behavior. They have some decent folks, but on the whole this is true. Their staff also have adopted a sort of "us against them" attitude in which if a member actually does lodge a compliant about the way a staffer treated them on the "help desk" subforum, other staffers will automaticly jump to the defence of their fellows no matter how questionable the moderator's actions were. Granted, Warseer does do a decent job of eliminating the real trolls but at the same time the mod' staff is a bit quick on the trigger finger in dealing with normal members who just go too far on occasion.

I've seen people on Warseer get disciplined or even banned for reasons that I thought very questionable and I myself just recently got awarded some "warning points" that I felt unjustified. Needless to say the staffers who replied to my complaint at the help desk would not even consider my side of the issue and let the warning stand.
(on an amusing aside given the precident that the Warseer staff have set in dealing with others, it's amazing that I have not been banned by now. It's not that I troll. But I do have a short fuze when dealing with fools, fan boys, and actual trolls. Honestly, given the year long war I waged with the old Portent site, I think some of the Warseer staff who were also Portent staffers are afraid of me and tend to treat me with kid gloves.)

Aside from the better moderation staff Dakka simply has a better membership base. Yes, we have our idiots and fanboys but not to extent that Warseer does. I'm convinced that when the official GW forums shut down some years ago that most of the regulars of those forums migrated to Warseer. The end result is that Warsser members are far more likley to be drooling fanboys and apologists and opposing views as to GW's practices are likely to be shouted down. Here on Dakka anti-GW sentiment (while far from universally accepted) is much more tolerated. Diversity of opinion is supposed to be a good thing, right?

This does not mean that Dakka does not have it's problems. I find that threads here tend to move slower and get fewer replies than the average one at Warseer. Once again this is far from universal but on the whole it's true. This is why when I'm seeking opinions on a topic I will often cut and paste a mirror post to both sites. Finally many of the actual trolls that have been banned from Warseer seem to eventually wash up here were they are more tolerated. (no names...but they know who they are) This place is far from being the idiotic troll community that 4chan's forums are, but it is a far more of a troll friendly forum than is Warseer. Permisive moderation does have it's good points as well as it's bad points I suppose...

Let's test the theory.

Gwar and H.B.M.C., though I have no idea who they are and have no real reason to think so, are big fat trolly idiots! RarrH!

*awaits ban*

edit: P.S. I was not aware of the YTTH site before, but after browsing it for a bit, it's not any better than Warseer or Dakka as far as list quality goes. Well, maybe a little better, but the most recent SW list for example has a stupid mentality and the tactics proposed aren't even legal. The site seems more like a soapbox for that one guy to rant and post random lists for armies he probably doesn't play. It's the old ArmyBuilderHammer... I've had to resort to that myself during busy times that left little opportunity for gaming, but it hardly is a path to tactical insight.

Thanks for the warning, man. But it's really not needed. I'm not addressing any one person or talking about a specific individual but am instead speaking of trolls and idiots in general. Thus I think I'm covered.

You don't know who we are? What are you - some kind of idio... uhh... spade!

But anyway - I am the Half Brother of Marneus Calgar. I am a paragon of humanity. A shining light in the dark. I, like all my other Casual Gaming Brothers (and Sisters), stand atop a mountain looking down upon the masses of 40K players (and, really, all people) with equal parts compassion and mercy. We understand your plight, and we understand how none of you could ever hope to attain the level of perfection that us Casual Gamers have. But we do not pity you - no, we encourage you to keep on trying. You may never be as good as us, but you can almost get there!

And Gwar!... Gwar! is a Tournament Gamer. From atop our mountain our shining light does not reach his kind. They do not dwell at the bottom of all life; they dwell beneath even those not worthy of our concern. They are not the enemy - they are the archenemy. They say that wherever there is light, there is shadow - and where ever there are Casual Gamers, there are *spits* Tournament Gamers. Do not be swayed by their wicked ways and competitive talk. And do not show them mercy, compassion or even pity. These aren't people stuck in some sort of lowly existence or people who have no control. No, these people chose to be tournament gamers, just as the conspirators chose to kill Caesar. They are irredeemable.

GW can time travel. They saw your idea then went back and made it before you did.

This all because Jervis is a time-travelling robot.

You had the right idea while looking down, but then you had to screw it all up in the end. You know damn well the masses of 40K players deserve neither compassion, nor mercy.

I don't know how long you've been playing, but it didn't take me a long time to realize that 90% of what people say as far as what units suck and what ones are awesome is complete nonsense. Though I do smile to myself every time I go to a tournament and see a "Conceived on a Message Board" list get completely destroyed, so I hope everyone keeps up the good work.

Orks actually are pretty good, man. Tau aren't as bad as people say, but their Codex could use an update.

This thread is boring and OT now, I fear I may catch whineitus and I'm only just getting over a bad case of the moans, so locking now.

If I had my way, I'd randomly ban people by playing a game of Doom which spawns enemies which are tied to dakka user accounts, then when I kill a monster in the game that is linked to your account ID, you die in dakka in real time. Fortunately for you all I conceded the final word on banning as part of the agreement yak and I have so saner rules prevail.
