Well, the fact that Dakka prides itself on being relatively vitriolic may or may not lead to a high proportion of lurkers. Or maybe they get scared away by some of the more prevalent posters. Or maybe a large number of people browse Dakka without being logged in. Or maybe Dakka is so large that they never have to ever log on to ask questions. Or maybe several hundred of the "guests" are from BoLS, hunting for "news" and "rumors."

I don't know why there are so many guests here. I've always found Dakka Dakka to be more open and inviting than some of the other forums. Lots of folks on here willing to carry a conversation and offer good advice.

That's just me though.

Because people on Dakka actually have Balls (even the ladies and Mods) and most people are soft and delicate.

Nah I joke, it's because on Dakka, most people don't Suffer the Fool to Live. If you come to Dakka, act nice, type properly and show you have two brain cells, you'll get along just fine.

Well said. I joined Dakka and Warseer on the same day. Never went back to Warseer after that day.

I also feel that Dakka's a more accepting community than warseer, especially in terms of not being dominated by 10 posters.

As a side note, Druchii.net was brutal with this. about 10 people whose opinions were/are authoritative and accepted by 80% of the community. Ridiculous.

Edit: Oh and another thing.

I was a lurker on Dakka for quite a while due to the galleries and most importantly the great battle reports. Best on the internet here. There was just so much more for me to browse through casually, and it might come down to just allowing embedded pics in the battle reports.

Actually, this is no joke. If you say something slowed here, people will let you know in no small detail just how slowed you are. And unlike Warseer, no Nazi mod will sweep in to ban all the offenders and cradle your balls until you feel better.

Registrations wont matter as much as long as the constant traffic stream is pulling in. Dakka is doing really well then.

think most of the lurkers are just browsing stuff like articles and galleries. I think some of them maybe browsing foe rumours like what RustyKnight said.

I don't really log in unless I need to, for stuff like posting or fiddling with my profile/preferences. If other people act in the same way, that might contribute to the lurker numbers.

I tried to play nice over the last couple of months on Warseer, yet somehow I managed to get banned four times even while on my best behavior (and sticking mostly to the IG and WH tactic threads). Some of the warnings I received still don't make sense to me: they'd issue the warning a week after the supposed offense, delete the post in question so I couldn't go back to see what I said, and never respond to requests for clarification. Eventually I ran out of email addresses and gave up.

The only reason I registered was I had been reading the forums for several months, but never found the answer to a nagging question. It's also the reason I don't post often. Usually someone has answered the question asked in the thread, asked the question I had in mind, or has already contributed an argument or point of view identical to my own on a topic.

*shrugs* I like forums, but here someone usually says/contributes what I wanted to input before I have the opportunity to.

Edit: there's several punctuation marks missing that I just can't place for some reason.

I've been banned for calling a spade a spade before.

I join dakkadakka because after browsing forums for 3 weeks, i couldn't resist the temptation to post on a forum with something awesome on it, or post something funny (well, to me anyways.)

I seriously don't not see why dakkadakka has so many guests and so less registers.

It's probably because Dakka mods won't ban you when you call a troll a troll, or an idiot an idiot. So that scares away all of the trolls and idiots, who happen to make up more than half of Warseer's population.

Warseer is also usually the first place to post rumors, as it is the spiritual successor of Portents.net. I frequently browse that subforum.

They are more lenient than the other wargaming boards. And you are still here, so they suspended you, they didn't ban you.

I made specific choices to encourage lurkers over registered users.

Lurkers use less resources (no read post tracking in the database, more aggressive caching is possible). We show one more advert per page to lurkers so it brings in a bit more maintenance income too.

The high guest count is partially due to bots not being counted correctly - about 15% of the total lurkers are bots. Any attachment that is viewed from a remote link also counts as one lurker which keeps the number up a bit (but not too much).

It always bugged me visiting other forums and not being able to interact as a guest - I hate registering if I dont intend to contribute, and so I am not bothered about getting people to register for the sake of registration numbers. Everybody can vote on images, edit the articles, view any and all attachments and vote on polls here. When people feel the need to actually contribute something more they can sign up easily, but hopefully they will have used the site enough as a lurker to not be too noobish upon registration.

So that is why the numbers are so big. In terms of raw traffic, I can only extrapolate certain things with the aid of sites like compete, alexa, and google trends but dakka is easily in the top 3 wargaming sites and seems to be hopping around the #1 spot in terms of raw traffic these days. I still have not begun any significant search engine optimisation as we've continued to grow fast enough as it is, though there is a massive SEO plan if we ever need a big boost in traffic.
