The only death star unit i ever field is in apoc games. It's the Doombringer Annihilation Force (15 termies + a Termie Chaso Lord. deep strike with no scatter (after Lord lands) and also gives you a couple of extra assets). the formation itself is 200 points, then add on the Lord and 15 termies. Considering the fact that the "termie lord" i usually go with is Abaddon, this unit is expensive

A friend of mine has a squad he always uses in his BA army - 5 assault termies with l.claws and a chaplain with p.fist, all in a LR. Nasty, nasty & expensive unit.

I don't think you understand what a 'deathstar' unit is. The only deathstar unit Tau can take is the Farsight bomb, as has already been mentioned above.

A death star is a unit that takes up a large portion of you army's points and leaves you in a bad spot if it dies early.
Large points cost (almost a third of my army) check
Bad spot if it dies (a large number of my tactics go down the drain) double check

I would call it a Death star personally.

Pfft, I ran with 15 of those with 2 FW in Warfish and 2 Railheads at 2000... the most fun I've had with Tau.

Except everybody kept their burst cannons.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I never really use "Death Stars", but a friend of mine and I were discusing the possibillity of taking 30 Big Meks with Shock Attack Guns in an Apocalypse game. Or 1 Big Mek w/ Shock Attack gun, and filling out the remaining points with grots.

The only deathstar unit I've run and it has worked out pretty good so far is.

x1) Arjac
x2) Twin wolf claw termies
x1) basic termi
x1) chainfist termi w/heavy flamer
x2) power armor wolf guard with 1 flamer
x1) Landraider Crusader with multi-melta.

Its not an instant kill unit, but enough to lock into a second phase of combat to stay safe against opponent shooting.

Yep..brutal, until they stare down a 10 man unit of Firedragons at a mesely 160 points...lol

Actually, any army that spams AP1-2 weapons, powerweapons/rending laught at such a unit....all they get is their 3++...it's the same as shooting normal marines with autocannons or heavy bolers at that point, and we all know how fast tac marines die

I don't have any players with those models in my area... so I don't really need to worry about it. The worst model that this squad has trouble with is an Executioner at 30-36". Especially if it has extra sponsons. That is a lot of AP 2 hits.

Swarmlord/Tyrant with a decked out Guard? 3 God-fexes?

Swarmy with guard - Points heavy, instant death really hurts when models cost that much and a friend takes skulltaker like religion
Also, he has limited use due to basic movement and no shooting :(

3 god fex's - 3 basic fex's tally in at 510 points.
That should say it all as it is
Upgrade them and you have possibly the biggest point sink in 40k.

About the best trick ive found is using leaper to drop LD then ID them using a nid alpha with boneswords
Hardly much use though when you cant get near a character.

Also a note on fex's - so many other cheaper options that can survive and actually do damage when needed (trygon prime for example)

I think that title goes to death company,
1030 points for 30 models with jump packs.

I might try running 10 Tactical Termies with 2 Cyclones and a Sanguinary Priest in TDA. it runs 545 points but it might be fun and unexpected. I was actually surprised when I saw the reduced cost on the specials for them.

One 'reasonable' death star unit I came up with:

Blood Angels

1 LRC w/mm
15 Death Guard w/bp/ccw
1 Chappy

660 pts

Want cheese and make it 'unreasonable'?

Add 15 power weapons for 225pts.

885 pts. If it gets to where it needs to 'getting', it will rip face on just about anything.

VS ws4/t4 that's, on average with the charge, 48 power weapon hits. Even without power weapons, it will kill 8 termies outright.

Even if the raider buys the farm, it's still 15 marines with fnp and fearless.

How's this for a deathstar?

Space wolves :

HQ: Wolf lord on thunderwolf
Wargear: Hammer, stormshield, runic armor, saga of the beastslayer, 2x wolves
cost: 255 pts

HQ: Wolf lord on thunderwolf
Wargear: runic armor, wolf necklace, frost weapon + stormshield, saga of the bear, 2x wolves
Cost: 285 points

HQ: Wolf lord on thunderwolf
Wargear: Belt of russ, runic armor, 2x wolves, 2x wolf claws, saga of majesty
Cost: 265 pts

HQ: Wolf lord on thunderwolf
Wargear: belt of russ, runic armor, 2x wolves, 2x wolf claws, saga of warrior born, wolftooth necklace
Cost: 295 pts

Elite: 5x thunderwolves
1x wolf with mark of the wolfen, stormshield
1x wolf with melta bombs, stormshield
2x wolves with stormshields
1x wolf with thunderhammer and stormshield
Cost: 440 points

Total unit cost: 1540 points. Total models: 17 Total wounds: 30

but god DAMN I don't think any army out there could put out enough firepower to stop this kind of monstrosity, if it went first. I mean, I'd field it in an 1850 point game... take 2 razorbacks with grey hunters (minimum sized) and 1 min sized squad of grey hunters on foot.

I mean... think about it. Odds are good there's a way the thunderwolves can get through terrain until they are within 20" or SOMETHING in your army... then they run, fleet, 12" charge, and its GG. Nothing will stop this in hand to hand. They will laugh at nobs, as they all take their 3+ or 4+ invulnerable saves against the few power claws that actually get to swing... try to swamp them with ork boyz, I don't see that going very well when are all so damn beastly. This unit would scare the poop out of my marine army... can't even fire krak missiles into them, because they will simply take the saves on the 2+ save wolf lords. Can't fire demolisher shells with any luck, because they have fenresian wolves to take the blows (or at worst, a 3+ stormshield save)...

bah, it could totally take orks too. multi charge like 3 squads of orks with it, win combat by like 15-20 wounds, and wipe em all out

next turn, they try to charge you back, you get your counter charge roll off, win by another 15-20 wounds, and boom, a winner is you!

marines wouldn't really be able to stop it either... they'd need terminators to do it, but the terminators would never be in large enough numbers they could survive to swing.

Eldar couldn't do gak against it... they'd fly around in their fagwagons, but you can only avoid a unit with a 24" max charge for so long... then those str10 hammer blows will rain down on them

IG might be able to do SOMETHING... but I doubt it. they'd probably approach the IG lines in cover.. and they'd smash into their russes / artillery first. you'd never kill enough of them before they got to you.
