Except that even if the Tyranids wipe out the whole galaxy, the orks still win.

Remember the fluff in the BBB, about the probe sent out from Mars around the time of the Horus Heresy? That's been going for 10,000 years and is STILL picking up signals, in distant galaxies, identified as Orkish?

Yep. That's right. The universe belongs to the greenskins.

Da orks!!
Why? Because they're the only race getting any joy out of life. And once they Galaxy is mostly populated by orks there would still be war but hey they don't care "cus' they died fightin"
For example the what are all the humans going to do after they beat chaos? Sure they hate them but don't have any other reasons to live except a dead emperor and the Tau are going to expanding because it's never enough. Its all misery, obsession, and hate. But orks their means is also their end and they enjoy every minute of it.

Root for: Mankind, specifically the end to the age of Imperium with the reemergence of the emperor and so forth. Let the rape then ensue.
Know should actually win: Tyranids have everything owned. If you lose, they process you into strength. They evolve ridiculously fast. Are single minded. I may be wrong here, but I would not be surprised if they even raped chaos. GASP! hear me out. If they cleanse the galaxy, no more worship or war=no enfeeblement of the chaos gods. Then take into effect the idea of the shadow in the warp... Ya I think they have the goods on everyone. Even if every one united against them RIGHT NOW, they still would be out numbered, out evolved, and out smarted. I mean how do you mess with something designed purely to kill? They say marines are made for that but... they are humans beefed up in an effort to make them the ultimate killing machines. Nids work from the ground up. Much more functional and efficient.

One thing I like about the 40k universe is that there's no "good" factions. Alsmost every faction is "evil" in their own way. I'm not big on "evil agendas", which is why I'm rooting for the Tyranids.

The Tyranids are the only race in 40k without actions based out of some emotion or malicious agenda. Even the Necrons are driven by the cruel will of the C'tan. They aren't evil, they're just driven by an insatiable will to feed. I think it's their neutrality and total lack of a motive that makes them seem to me at least, to be the best race to root for.

They're about as close to "good guys" in 40k as you get (IMO).

Yeah, but the Orks are also driven by their instinct to fight. So technically they have no evil intentions, unless you count killing people which you probably aren't since tyranids do that too.

I think both the Tyranids and Orks have no concept of good and evil.

I want either the Imperium or the Tau. Imperium has the most populace (Other than Orks/Tyranids), so watching them fall would be sad.

The Tau from what I can tell have a higher standard of living, but they are tiny and have yet to go through the experiences of larger races. Hence, a galaxy run by them could be unstable, even if trade would probably flourish.

I am not sure why some people think the Space Wolves are so noble. Well, maybe because their codex depicts them as such, or at least somewhat tries too, but there is much more background than just the codex.

If you read some of the Heresy novels you clearly get the message that they are enormous douchebags to anyone but their own chapter and the Emperor, being his lapdogs who, once unleashed at a target, just kill and destroy everything and ask questions later. Who cares if they unnecessarily destroy the cultural heritage and knowledge of a world, or if they take out countless civilians if that is the shortest way to their (military) opponents? Sure it is not the Space Wolves. "Befehl ist befehl". They view everything black & white and their minds are too easily manipulated.

Either something is good or something is evil. That is not a mentality I personally root for.

Granted I have not read any of the more present Space Wolves novels (yet), so maybe their philosophies and stances changed for the better since the Heresy. In that case I might change my opinion.

The most righteous Space Marine chapters seem to be the Ultramarines and the Salamanders.

The Imperium of Man in the 40K universe is a place where a lot of "necessary evil" happens in name of survival of mankind, which taints a lot of chapters and factions in all kinds of different ways (including the Emperor himself, with the sacrifice of 1000 souls every day to sustain his form), yet as far as I can tell these two chapters have been able to find the most balance between operating as part of that Imperium's military and all the obligations that come with that, and staying respectful towards all forms of life, including non-threatening non-human life, in the way they accomplish their goals.

Yeah, now compare the SW to other chapters and the Inquisition. In the codex there are several accounts of them refusing to kill civilians. Like the First War for Armegeddon, where the civilians were killed to prevent the spread of Chaos, the SW objected to this. I doubt Calgar would have been as enraged over it as Logan was.

As to Good vs Evil
The whole, there are no good guys, argument is rather... ambiguous. The first thing to ask is what it 'good' and what it 'bad'. If there is no such thing in your mind in the first place then how could fictional universe have any such thing?

As for me, good is to reject the baser nature of oneself, have elements of integrity, honor, a moral code you keep, a positive intentions, exercising self control, selflessness, and compassion. You need not have all of these to be more or less good (no one is perfect) Bad would be a lacking of or opposite to the listed elements. With this in mind...

If you look at most factions, you can generally divide them up into the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Good
Grey Knights
Sisters of Battle
Craftworld Eldar
Most SM chapters
The average guardsman
the bulk of the tau

The Bad
Chaos.
Dark Eldar
Majority of the Inquisition
Many SM chapters
Most of the imperial hierarchy and bureaucracy.
Necrons/C'tan
Tau Ethereal Caste

The Ugly-neutral-forces of nature
Tyranids
Orkz

It is all a matter of relativity, but there are good elements, although they are not disney style simple good. Take the Blood angels for example. They have the red thirst and black rage. The flaw. Thus they are doomed to go insane... violently and bloodthirstily insane. Yet they also cling to sanguinius' vision of a better future for mankind, to their honor, to beauty, and basically to their good side despite the great propensity to do evil that they have. They resist and hold back the flaw day by day. It is easy for something that is inherently good to be good, but something so deeply flawed, doomed, and with a huge urge and nature to do very nasty evil things, that fights that nature every day in order to fufill a code of honor and duty and in many cases to make things better where they can... that is true nobility and goodness.

The Sons and Daughters of Commorragh.

Where others go to war for the sake of achieving dominance, protection or the greater expansion of their boundaries, the dark kin go to war for the sole reason to inflict pain and enslave.
They're like nothing else in the galaxy, in the sense that they are capable of a conscience and still choose to bring misery and death to all, including their own kind.

Where others come from vast worlds, aboard vast warships and the like, the dark kin come from the webway, the place that is near unreachable and exists between real space and the warp.
There is no telling when or where they will strike, but when they come, they come for your life and your soul. There is nowhere to hide, they are coming and they will take you.

Death to the imperium of the corpse god Mon-Keigh. Death to the Craftworld cowards, the exodites and the mad. Death to chaos and it's weakness. Death to the Ork inferiority. Death to the hive mind and it's insects.
Death to the Necrontyr and their lack of control. Death to the greater good, the Eldar couldn't find it and neither will you.

I feel that 'good' is acting according to the greater morals of your society, and 'evil' against it. Killing, torturing and enslaving others is not an evil act within their society, no more than restraining, breeding and slaughtering pigs is to ours. I'm still rooting for DE. They are one of the 'purer' cultures, in most respects; they don't apologise for their actions and rarely waste time justifying it. They do what they must because they can.

WRONG. The dark eldar piss their pants at the thought of slaanesh. They take slaves MAINLY to offer their souls instead of their own to slaanesh. They have no protection against him. They may have developed a taste for inflicting pain and some such, but that began for this reason and continues for the same reason. Know what your are talking about before you go on some power trip and act like a DE expert.
