Sorry, but this is rubbish. In Italy, Serie A games are often punctuated by 5 second ads when the ball is out of play. At least, they were a few years back when I last visited my Granny over there!

I think there are several factors. American sporting culture is based on excellence. There's no such thing as a 'gallant loser' who plays the game in 'the right way'. Winning is everything. The simple fact is that US teams can't compete at the highest level, and as long as that is the case, soccer will not be as popular in the US as other sports.
Why is this?
Well, as long as soccer is less popular (and thus, less lucrative) the top athletes are going to play other sports, simple as that.
Interesting point of view, but as the Hispanic minority grows and becomes a more focused part of the national cultural identity I can see football becoming of increasing relevance in the US.

See that bit in bold? That's why it's called 'soccer'.
Also, there are ads of the type Gwar mentioned in Spanish football too.
@GG - I wasn't inferring that Americans can't appreciate the 'art' of sport - just that many Americans can't appreciate the 'art' of football yet. Just like we can't appreciate the 'art' of Basketball in the UK (seriously - WTF is with THAT game? ).
You're obviously an exception to this!
And yeah, I have watched some MLS. It was actually pretty good. I remember seeing Beckham score an absolute wonder goal in an MLS match.
By the way, Alexei Lalas is a knobhead.

To be honest, i'm actually looking a bit forward to seeing this, especially in group G with Brazil and Portugal (my all-time favorites)
And also, i'm relieved Romania isn't there. They missed another great chance to make fools out of themselves. I really miss Hagi :(

I know that's where 'soccer' comes from (otherwise I wouldn't have specified 'association' football as opposed to all other types)
I just chuckle at the typical American-ness of it. Epitomised by an episode of Disney's 'Handy Manny' in a character says with a completely straight face "Football is the Spanish word for Soccer"!
As for the ads, I wasn't aware of any countries that threw random ads over the game. Damn those heathens ruining my clever argument

That's actually correct - the spanish word is Futbol.
FUNFACT: 'Jogging' in Spanish is futing. Always makes me chuckle, that.

Makes YOU chuckle? futing in my language is a gramatically incorrect word for "fething", though quite used

It's "futind", synonym for "to be fething". Also, i know there's a word in Portuguese "pula" (i don't know if it exists in Spanish as well), which in Romanian is the exact word for male genitalia. It's also a town in Hungary

I haven't seen a game of MLS that I could make it past the 10 minutes of droll. Of course... I haven't been able to watch Beckham either, since he has been hurt so much. And lets face it Beckham is an example of Euro soccer not american soccer.

Argentina will win if:
1. They have a good day.
2. Messi starts behaving the way he should.
3. Maradona lets Cambiasso and Zanetti play.
I still cant believe how Maradona could refuse to let the two most successful defenders in Argentina play
in the world cup.
At least he's not some hobby astrologer like Raymond Domenech.

Perhaps I'm just in denial..
England's traditional problem is two-fold.
1.Traditionally a 'power' playing style which doesn't work so well against the continental ball control style. This has been reduced because the number of foreign players in British teams now means that the skills have transferred.
2. Lack of team practice and spirit due to short preparation times.
IMO England also have a strong tendency to rest on their laurels if they get ahead, when they should bear down hard and put the game away with another goal. This results in a lot of games being won late by the other side because they were only one goal down, or it going to penalty shoot-out.
I'm hoping the manager has been working on these things -- he got rid of the WAGs and seems serious about team spirit.
However I have £6 riding on a win by Brazil, Denmark or Ghana.
