Hi there Dakka,

I'm not to sure why there isn't an thread about this somewhere down here!

So who are your favorites for winning the Fifa World Cup 2010?

Mine is of course; Holland!

I give the Netherlands a decent chance of getting to the semis and after that who knows? Depends on Robben's injury really.

As for overall winner, I'm going for Spain.

South Africa's criminal element will most certainly be the winners of this year's event.

Thanks for that.

On Topic - I think Argentina have a good chance provided Maradonna doesn't turn any more loonier.

Nah I think it's not going to be as bad as everyone thinks it will. (At last I hope so!).

@Flashman

While I regret the injury of Robben, I believe the team can manage without him.

And on the other hand; when two years ago on the Europe Cup the team played great during the group-stage the Dutch team were to arrogant when playing
against Russia(resolting in a loss and exit of the Europe Cup).
Considering that the Dutch manage to reach the quarter finals this time, and Robben is recovered, he'll be extremely agressive to win.

On the other hand, Holland always plays nice matches, but never reach an final...

But we all hope, we all hope...

One player does not a team make - Robben is a loss but not insurmountable. The main thing is that for once at a major tournament, Holland arent fighting each other! RVP looks to be on fire at the moment too.

Yeah, I think they've got the players and the momentum. Best line up of forwards IMO.

North Korea.

They've cracked nuclear fission. They've recently managed to get nuclear fusion to hold together and they have the best leader on the planet who keeps his people safe from all the outside forces of evil that want to tear his proud and noble nation apart.

His team of North Korean superstars will triumph over the teams of darkness to claim the Cup.

I really want my home-country of Brasil to win. I think they can make it to the finals.

I don't think they'll actually win, however. I feel like Italy's got a strong chance.

Also, poor South Africa. They're not even gonna make it out of Group Play.

@Erasoketa: Ha! I can understand it's hard to avoid soccer in Spain! I've been there three times before, in Madrid and Barcelona(2x) and it really is part of the culture!

My apologies to you if you mind this topic

Anyway, news is coming that Robben will be able to play at least 30 minutes against Denmark!

@ Jin: I believe there is a large chance Holland and Brazil meet in the Quarter finals. Sorry to say you won't win that one! No just kidding, that is the match I'm probably most worried about! And it isn't even started...

@ SilverMK2.

@ Reds8n: Just as Filbert says, there is a really good vibe with the squad at this time!

@ Filbert: I totally agree with you, the squad is very close and seems to have a lot of fun together. And Robin van Persie really REALLY recovered well from that injury won't you agree?

De Oranjes won't win mate, sorry. Neither will England though. I think both teams will do pretty well, but for me, the winner is Spain.

I think Brazil have about the same chance as Spain, maybe a little better as they are used to playing at high and varying altitudes.

In my dream, England beat Argentina in the final thanks to a dubious handball decision. After the match all the players wave their hands at Maradonna shouting 'where's your hand of God now???'

Then I wake up and realise it'll probably be Spain...

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Spain have a number of World Class players, whereas we have one and he will get himself sent off at a crucial moment in a knockout game.

Just as well, I dont think I could stomach a Sir David Beckham.

I would be astounded if A) England won the World Cup in the first place and B) if Beckham received a knighthood for it because he isn't actually playing

EDIT - Anyway, I have a much worse scenario. Cashley gets behind the Brazilian back four, puts a cross in, hits the back of the keepers legs and gets the winning goal. Arise Sir Ashley Cole. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Oh, I don't know about that - Steven Gerrard could get a game for pretty much any club on earth, as could Ashley Cole. Joe Cole is pretty handy too, IMO.

Too many Coles, but I would watch a soccer game if Cheryl Cole played

Yeah The Brits here don't sound to confident about there own team. I think England is equally gifted with players to spain. I mean, you have John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney not to forget!

Have a little bit of faith in your country!

(still, spain played awesome last night against polen(6-0))

As an ethno-centric America, not too concerned with the global soccer thing-a-ma-jig going on. Heck, can't even name a current or past soccer player or team for the life of me.

So here goes my America Basketball prediction:

I believe the Lakers will take the NBA Finals in six games.

But if I had to pick a country, does Mexico currently have a team in this event? Sounds like America doesn't do so well in soccer, so might as well be someone from North America.

IIRC the World Cup from 1994 was celebrated in USA. But as I'm not a fan I don't know what teams have made it to this year's World Cup.

Eternal Plague

American sports talk radio consistently derides the whole soccer sport, claiming we are more a football and baseball kind of country.

To a degree, here is the list of sports in order of importance in America:

1.Professional Football (NFL)
2.Baseball
3.College Football
3.Basketball (more of a personality driven sport, less about the teams and more about the LeBrons and Bryants)
4.Golf (when Tiger Woods is playing)
5.Nascar/Indy Car Racing
6.Horse Racing (when the Triple Crown is being ran)
7.Boxing
8.NHL
9. Mixed Martial Arts
10.Tennis
11.Olympics (when it is on)
12.Soccer

Given the talk I hear on the radio, this is aboue what I believe is the importance of each sport in America relative to the others.

Actually football (soccer) is the second most played team sport in America, second only to basketball.
