I think there are a lot of reasons vulkan is still popular and competitive. First, it's one of the cheapest 2500pt top tier armies to build. Second, it's been around for long enough that the best players have literally hundreds of competitive games under their belts with it. Third, it doesn't have any glaring blind spots or weaknesses, ensuring a pretty fair matchup nearly every game.

Unless something has changed there is only one location for the finals and that is Chicago.

On Dakka he was Eldanar. In our area, he was Lee. R.I.P., Lee Guthrie.

I was one point short of 3rd in 4th place with borrowed Tank Guard (which I had never played before). : ) I played the tournament winner (who has won 3 years in a row now) in the first round, got rushed, made mistakes (like losing track of the time), and got a major loss. I could have gotten the draw with a little more skillful playing, though I don't think there was any way I was winning that one. I'm happy overall and enjoyed my games (though the guy I massacred in the last round wasn't having much fun, which always puts a damper on things a bit).

I am determined that next year will be the Year of the Ork, since I think I'd enjoy myself more with my own stuff (and do better). I just need to make my warband bigger. I hope they keep it going.

I stopped in for the final turn, after shipping the wife off to work for the night.
Looked like an interesting field. I counted two IG, three Eldar, two Orks, two Marines, and one Space Wolves force.

The guy you massacred in the last round is pretty intense and into his army, and I'm not sure he's faced an IG force like yours before. You two looked veenly matched as I was walking in, but by the end, I could tell things were going south for him. He's a great guy, just gets very invested in the battles
In looking at the scoring, there was only one dude who didn't get at least a minor win. Vulkan Podspam, but from the list I picked up during cleanup of tables, it looked like a list that contained everything the guy owned. Some odd armament choices, and such, which probably contributed to his placement.

First game was against IG gunline and we had to contact the TO around 7-8 times for simple rules questions. Some of which were common knowledge, or so I thought. He tried to claim cover to vehicles in area terrain lacking 50% obscure, tried to say embarking did not count as moving since the book says "model is removed from the board", and my personal fav was since he could see the helmets on a few marines with 50% behind a rock formation that the save should only be 5+. We only got to turn 4 with the wasted 30+ minutes spent walking over to/talking to TO's. Ended up exactly tied for nodes and KP at the end due to me being unable to kill the last of three spirit hosts that managed to roll teleport on his last turn and get on one of the nodes.

Round Score - 12pts

Round2 I was against a drop BA list. With DS protection from the Inquisitor and playing gunline SW this game went rather poorly for him. Aside from a small issue with the judges ruling that jump marines tac squaded use ONE roll to arrive from deepstrike and hit the board in a lump splitting up afterwards. I am almost positive this is wrong, but it is how it was played. As a result 6 units hit the board turn 2 with 3 rolls made. Kinda meh, but I figured it did not matter much so I did not raise a stink. We had already had to clarify a couple rules and I did not want a repeat of the last game. We actually ended up getting to the last turn with like 30 minutes left and the guy was an excellent sport and agreed to speed through the last round as he was almost tabled. I had a small chance for a major so I skipped the nonessential stuff and just did the actions that mattered to the outcome. I had 2 tank shocks and a good bit of shooting to pour into his last couple units and came up short. His remaining IC, and 2 units of 2/1 jump troops each managed to contest three of the objectives that were all close to center. Lost 500pts of my list to his 2100 and still only got the minor. Even so this ended up being the funnest game of the day for me. Great opponent and came down to the wire.

Round Score - 15pts

The last round was against a Vulcan list, and I would rather not fully recap this round as I am currently trying to remove all traces of the game from my memory. Without a doubt the worst dice in a game I have ever had since I started playing 40k. It was to the point that the opponent and people watching were as amazed as I was. Small examples: I shot 3x Living Lightning 4x Missiles 2x LC 9x HB shots into a unit of three Speeders. With the roughly 8 hits str 7+ and the 3-4 hits str5 I managed to shake him 4 times and immobilize one. I hit one if the Raiders with 2 meltas and 2 lascannons then rolled a 3 on the 2d6 pen for the melta that hit, and the pen I got on the LC only shook it. In the following turn he hits 3 of my Razors and 1 of my Speeders, pens each hit, and rolls 4 back to back 6's to destroy them. His list was good, and I am not trying to take anything away from his game but it seemed I had no chance from the first set of rolls. Bad dice always suck, but combined with an opponent rolling like a champ it makes for a horrible 2 hrs at a table.

Round Score - 0pts (at the end of round 4 I was getting pissed at my rolls to the point of looking like a bad sport/TFG, so I called it. First time I have quit a tourney game out of sheer frustration, and hopefully the last. Given what I had left on the table and the distance of his guys from the two nodes it was clear he was pulling the max score no matter what.)

Enjoyed seeing the guys from Easley/Charleston and looking forward to their tourney in July. All in all Ard Boyz was an OK time this year, but I just do not understand how it seems the past two years these rules issues keep coming up at the semis over things that should not require TO involvement. I guess some stores just decide to run with house rules and people take them to be the actual rules on things. I just wish I did not have to play said people every year.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.

Number 9, for more info on the Game Castle, The Everliving fielded foot IG, and I fielded pretty standard chaos- Abby, lash prince, termies w/LR, zerks & plagues in rhinos, oblits, havocs, vindi. Also had a few squads of Lesser Daemons, which slightly breaks the pattern.

Cold Steel Mercs are sending three to the finals; two 1sts and a 2nd. If you see us there, I'm the much-shorter one, at only 6'.

No offense to those who play those armies, but I'm shocked that a Tau and a Necron player placed in the Finals.

By the way, I'm the Tyranid player listed as taking first in the 'South Florida' Semi. It took place at Tate's Gaming Satellite. There was another Semi at a store in Miami, but I don't know what the results were there.

Jonathan and I played the DOW mission. He won the roll and made me go first. I didn't want to go first so I decided to reserve everything so he can't just walk on and shoot me up. I played very cautiously against a very good player. Luckily I eeked out a minor loss. I ended up 2nd by one point over the 3rd place finisher.

3rd place was John Green using a Space Marine army that had 3 Thunderfire cannons and at least 20 thunderhammer/storm shield terminators.

I am WELL aware of the danger that a well played Tau army presents, it's just that it is so difficult to run one well in the current incarnation of the game that it seems like so many people have switched to the 'easy button' armies. My area used to have some VERY dangerous Tau players, but almost all of them have switched to armies that you don't have to work as hard at.

I am still convinced that Necrons are hopelessly outclassed in the current version of the game, but I am looking forward to what they come up with in the new 'Dex.

Yeah I haven't really seen anyone who doesn't think Necrons just suck

From what was posted in the BoLS thread where the necron win was reported, his opponents apparently had no experience playing necrons and tried to kill the monoliths instead of phasing him out - not that I blame them, given the scarcity of necrons

Yeah number9dream... you did a great job with that list. Thanks for doing it.

I didn't word my last post well though - I meant:

It would be nice to see which armies competed along with the winners.

Seeing 100 IG winners doesn't tell you much if 98 of armies competing were IG... yah know what I'm saying? Though I realize nobody has been submitting that sort of information yet.
