see..that is cool and all, but I could buy a cheap house, and have all of my dream machines, and have around 100,000 give or take left over, for the price of that car.
Presumably, you're talking about the Aston and not the MAN truck?
OK... Let's see if that's true.
under $300k Aston Martin DBS
vs
$100k cash
$100k for 5 clunkers in good, working condition
= under $100k for a shack to live in?
I dunno what sort of house you're planning to buy for $100k, but I'm kinda curious what you had in mind.
ok, so the extra 100k is a bit much, but I would have around 19-20k left over.
the jetta, with EVERYTHING that I want, would be around 5k. The Cedric, including import costs, engine swap and minor mods, would go 15k, the CBR would be, AT MOST 3k, the SILVIA s13 would be mayBE 10k. I dont care about right hand drive, I just want the front clip on a 1990 240 with the SR20 DET. So more like 6-7k. So, 30k?, there a plenty of houses in Port Townsend, WA, that are 160k and under... maybe you live in a place where the housing market has not been affected, but in the Seattle area, you can get a badass house for cheap.

I think you'll be *very* challenged to get all of those cars in good running condition for $ 40k (5 + 15 + 3 + 10 + 7 = 40). Based on the ages of the cars, I think you're looking at 3 or 4 engine rebuilds and 3 or 4 tranny rebuilds, not to mention the fluids, brakes, wheels, tires, hence my plug at $20k each for $100k total.
Per my profile, I live in SoCal where housing *starts* at $300k, a 2k SF "nice" home is $500k, and placing it in a "nice" neighborhood runs $700k. This is *after* foreclosures and such.

Dont usually like yank cars, but i do have a love for the GT500
In all realism though:
Integra type R.
Not too expensive, so all those paying out over the 100k for a car, i get this with 95k left to spend.
With less than half of whats left it can be tuned well enough to push it past the 850BHP mark, making it faster aswell.
The fact it weighs nothing to start with is allways nice.

umm...its 5x15x3x7 = 30k. give or take.
first off, I can do all of the work myself, second, I have built 3 MKII jettas, and I used to work for a volkswagen audi specific junk yard, so I am 110% positive on price for that. second, search craigslist, I can get a good running MKII jetta for under 1500, which leaves me 3500 for mods and repair.... more than enough. the cedric I have priced, and with import costs from Jlist, its around 7 thousand for the 86 model I want. which leaves me 8 thousand for mods and repair. The CBR is easy, if I cant find the repisol fairings, then I buy them and get them done custom. 1992 CBRs are cheapo. and the silvia? 1990 240sx, 2500 or cheaper (I price them all the time), front clip including engine shipped from japan, 3000 or under. that 5500, the front clip is everything from the winshield up.....which leaves me 1500 give or take for repairs. considering I would be getting the entire front clip including suspension engine tranny etc in new or used good conidtion, then......
trust me man, I did nothing but eat sleep breath bleed and cry cars for a large portion of my shorter than Frazz's lifespan. well my first golf I did a full engine and tranny swap, did the coilovers, replaced the entire interior and welded the 2.5 exhaust myself. that took about 2 months, as I was a student and had a full time job.
my jetta, I rebuilt the 8v, port and polished the block and intake manifold, replaced all pistons with JEs, took the lower manifold from a 2.0 ABA turbo for super high compression through 1st and 3rd gear, very short gears, but unbelievable tork. welded the 2.5 DTM exhaust myself, no cat...hahaha. did the coilovers, upper and lower tie bars in front and back, took out power steering and air conditioning and re belted the whole car. pulled the seats and but in a MKIII recaro interior. ummmwhat else did I do?....oh, fabricated an entire cold air intake myself out of an INJEN kit for a B16.
I also built a rabbit almost identical to my first golf.
I have also assisted on a 2001 M3 engine swap into a 89 E30.
I have stripped COMPLETELY at LEAST 60 audis and VWs of all years and models.

A VR6 will fit in the Vanagon engine bay? Don't people usually swap in Subie or Porsche engines?

yeah, it's tight, but they do, and it works beautifully....the coolest way I have seen it done was with audi ABS and 4 wheel drive out of an audi. the Vr6 was turbo'd...the vanagon did a fething 13.7 quarter mile.
you CAN use subie or porsche engines, but if you use the VR6, the wiring harness is so much easier to fabricate, and then you can still use audi.vw parts.

"Important" simply means you have to deal with a lot of (i.e. silliness) while getting stuff done. The "plebian" bit is mostly referring to how ridiculously common BMWs are out here. Still, this is our second 5 - perhaps a lack of imagination? Oh, yeah, we're all good.
