Pretty nice overall.
But I too am of the opinion the red should be more brighter and "alive".
There are better ways to paint old looking armour then dulling down the colours.

Ok, cool.

However realism has nothng to do with it, if that was the case 95% of all the miniatures would have to be redone.
Fluttering scroll paper all over every weapon hindering their usage, bright red shoot-me-I´m-over-here colours, clanking chains on every surface on "soldiers" who already weigh a ton, weapon rounds the size of coke bottles meaning hes out of ammo pretty damn quick and spikes everywhere hindering movement in vegetation as well as urban rubble.

If GWs models are to be taken at face value realistically speaking then the best defense against any attack would be to build a castle in the middle of a swamp surrounded by shrubberies and lots of stairs. No bumbling 2 ton marine clad in chains and spikes would ever touch it

Any more pics of other stuff?

The point of people making them cartoony style is that they stand out from a distance on the tabletop, which gets you points at tournaments. I like my dark murky muddy stuff better but I won't win any painting competition with em. Since WD magazine came out, the 'eavy metal' painting team has upped the ante on what constitutes a 'good' paintjob by obeying their own rules. Only in a few ork or nurgle or catachan type armies can you still get away with a rugged look. Everything is supposed to be bright and flashy and colorful... especially marine armor. I call - Don't try to circumvent the language filter - I want my Marines mud covered and battle hardened looking... but then again, I don't expect to win painting contests either (or even care, it's just fun to paint)

Retroactively applied infallability is its own reward. I wish I knew this years ago.

Great job, mate! Keep it up! AS far as your color scheme goes, if you are happy with it, that is ALL that matters. Your shading & highlighting are top notch and if you've only been at it for 8 months, I'm terrified at what you will become in the coming years (I've been at it for 20+ years and here you are, a newbie, nipping at my heels with your skills!)! LOL!! My only suggestion would be to thicken that skin a little bit if you plan on being a Dakkaite! Most of it is all in good fun, so keep that in mind.

I think what pyri meant was to him there is a difference between muted and gritty/dirty. Now before I am taken wrong degree of highlighting etc is subjective and to each their own. But being less drastically highlighted does not necessarily = dirty/gritty.

I think what he was getting at was the there aren't any scratches, chips, weathering techniques applied to imply wear and age, and these things can make the model absolutely filthy and realistic without resorting to extreme highlights.

When I did my version of this mini, I used rust, soot and ash weathering powders, as well as free hand chipping, oil streaks and scuffing. Mind you this was on top of a much darker, less contrasty red than I used on my 'live' terms. I was sort of thinking dead optimus prime in my head to some degree. (old school cartoon movie, not Michael bay lol).mind you this was one of my first minis back after a 7 year break from the hobby, so it is not perfect by any means!

In any case check out the my gallery if you want to see, I highly, highly recommend weathering powders and free hand or sponge chipping for you based on your stated style preference! It's great stuff I am still learning myself, but most of the techniques are adopted from military modeling, ww2 stuff mostly, these guys love to have their stuff as mucky and realistic as possible. YouTube has a ton of awesome videos on all kinds of looks and materials if you are curious.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

That is a nice clean model. Good paint job and detail.

If you have the talent and follow the tutorials on the web and some of the publications out there even a novice at the hobby can paint well. It just take talent and willingness to put the time in.

Your work is excellent. The head replacement is especially good. Your attitude however needs adjusting. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't talk to anyone like that in person.

If you didn't read them before you posted, here's a reminder with emphasis on number 1 and number 5:

Lorek wrote:Hey everyone, I just wanted to post a few reminders about posting etiquette here on Dakka Dakka. We've had a lot of new people lately, and these are some things I've run in to.

1. Rule #1 is Be Polite! It's easy!

2. No Thread Necromancy. If a thread is more than a month old, leave it alone. If you're really interested in the topic, start a new thread! There are exceptions, like updates to modelling blogs or threads in forums that don't get much traffic, but in general bringing back old threads is simply annoying to the bulk of the posters who have already moved on.

3. Before posting on a topic, check for existing threads! There's a Search feature that works really well for this, and usually all you really need to do is scan the first few pages of the appropriate forum to make sure you're not duplicating something. This especially applies in You Make Da Call, where your question very well may have already been argued to death (and beware the rusty spoons!).

4. Stay on the original topic of the thread. It's really easy to wander off, but if you find yourself diverging too much from the original topic, start a new thread.

5. Please be intelligible. We strongly encourage proper punctuation, spelling, grammar and composition, but if we can't understand you, we'll ignore you. Before you post, hit the Preview button and double-check what you've written before posting it, and remember that you can always go back and edit your posts to fix any problems. I usually don't catch my mistakes until after I've posted, so you'll see a lot of "This post was edited 2 times" in small letters at the bottom of my posts.

If you have any questions about anything here on Dakka, feel free to ask. Most of the members and any of the Mods are glad to help you out!

Amazing paint job.
And I agree with Guitardian, Space Marines look best in **** encrusted, snow encrusted, mud encrusted, and even grass encrusted battle armour. Oh, and lots of scratches on the metal.
