Could be interesting times ahead for Orcs and Gobbos.
Looks like Mantic are going to do Orcses next.

He suggested I hold off in investing in a Tomb Kings army because he expects a new book sometime early in 2011.

If Orcs & Goblins is the next book, and work has just started on TK, then that would fit the schedule he suggested.

Well, work on TK is almost done, that's why we expect them 2011. Otherwise it would be 2-3 years in the future.

Popsicle wrote:Anyway, I'm interested. I was thinking of finding my way into Fantasy with some Tomb Kings, but I might just try Orcs & Goblins.

I think the 'Basecoat, Wash, Done', 'Bash 'em out' style of Painting is one that will suit me, as right now I'm staring at Deathwing, which require SOOO much detail and attention.

Do you mean the way of chaos dwarfs?

Hah, there's no such thing and there never was!!

That's not actually true. Chaos Dwarves still exist, and are a force to be reckoned with.

They're just very insular and not given to getting involved with outside affairs. Kinda like pre-Pearl Harbor America.

Gah!

Kan's switching between real world and Fantasy world defenses is mind boggling at times!

Uhoh. I think I broked Alpharius.

But honestly it was the best way to describe the situation as it stands. The Chaos Dwarves aren't too actively involved. The Hellcannon marked, as far as I know, the first time they've taken part in "modern" affairs for awhile.

You confuse the release of some new High Elf miniatures in a couple of months, which was confirmed, and the release of a new O&G army book in q1 on 2011, as is being rumoured in this thread.

The only problem I have with this is the influx of TK terrain that they will probably be using in the book but thats just my guess.

O&G as new Book? that's a huge pile of turd.. they don't need it so soon.. Ogre Kingdoms need it more.. as do Tomb Kings, Brettonia and Wood Elves..

So, O&G as new armybook? heck no..

Yeah, honestly. GW has the exact opposite track record than what you're implying.

O&G... with lots of monsters? Why? O&G were horde, just like Skaven. They don't have need for large amounts of monsters. War Machines, yes (Supa Batterin' Rams, Troll Siege Detachments, Effigies, etcetera), but for monsters they've pretty much always been giant squigs (which they already have), spiders (see Squigs), Giants, and Wyverns.

I can't see them fitting in lots of monsters: It just doesn't work with Orcs. You have the dreaded Squig Beast of Nom, Gork's Hound (a fast Squig), Mork's Magical Fungus Ball (Magic Resistance for units within 12", and so on, but besides lots of Squigs there's not much to do (And lots of squigs can go stale pretty quickly what with being all "OM NOM" buggers).

For changes I expect to see:

Either 2pt Goblins again, 3pt with more equipment, or one of the above w/ half-point equipment. Goblins may be consolidated into a single unit type, or represent upgrades now.

Lots of Orc & Goblin Magic Spells gone. Waaagh! will either be removed, reduced in effect, or drastically raised in casting value. Gork'll Fix It probably poofs. Most spells become multi-casting value.

Miscast Table made worse than BRB Miscast Table. It's a matter of principle: Since 6th Edition, it's gone "BRB Miscast = Terrible -> O&G Miscast Table = Worse -> BRB Miscast Table = Terrible -> O&G Miscast Table = Worse -> BRB Miscast Table = Terrible..." On 2 all Orc Wizards Explode.

Black Orcs take another blow, O&G Unit Champions probably too.

Several magic items changed / removed (mixture of yay and boo).

Animosity is changed, for better or worse. Might get Beastmen treatment, might go back to the old, might stay the same (this I doubt), might be something completely different.

Note that this is all 7th Edition rules in mind, however. Keep in mind that this would be the first purely 8th Edition rulebook. We'll get a look at how a lot of things will change. Will "Two for one" pieces of War Machines go away? Are unit upgrades like Musicians about to go up in cost? Are characters going to get a price hike to limit spamming potential? Will the Denver Broncos reach the Super Bowl ( )?

We can't make too many guesses on the book yet, as we're still (predominantly) in a 6th & 7th Edition mindset for such. My guesses are what I'd expect last edition, but the new books might be more focused on application to 8th Edition than they are new rules and units.

*Cough* Space Marines *Cough*

O&G aren't that badoff in fantasy I think. As in, they can actually still be competitive. All the new book has to do is fix Animosity (the best way simply being get rid of it), and the biggest weakness of the book is gone.

It's nothing to do with need, GW just spent a fortune on a new edition of the game and it makes prime business sense to follow up a big release with something that is certain to be popular, do well and bring in the most money to refill the coffers.

From what I hear that "Arachnarok" that was spotted in the WFB book is actually just a 3-up of a Goblin Spider Rider, converted up and sans Goblin. Still a cool idea if it holds true though.

it is a 3-up in the wfb rulebook yes, but the model is still real.

GW doesn't have the same list that we all do in terms of what 'needs' a new book.

They have a separate list driven by the 'need' to sell lots of stuff, and apparently, they beleive the a new O&G book will do that, better than Ogres, Wood Elves, etc.

But how can they think that?!?! I mean, WE and OK both have crappy rulesets! They MUST be selling loads of figures!!

I doubt they'll do away with animosity, as its one of those 'theme' elements that is rarely cast out entirely. I would expect it to be modified, though. Personally, I think that some sort of leadership bonus for proximity to the enemy (but not contact with it) would both address the problems with animosity, and add an interesting (and story supported) mechanic.

This may sound odd, but I like animosity.
Even if it means I get a pasting, it is hilarious that they start squabbling.
But them I play gobbos for laughs not tourney serious stuff.

I can see why it must be irksome if you are playing competitively.

I can see why Ogres wouldn't be next, even from a logical (for GW???? ) point of view. They're good in 8th edition, imho, and O&G need it more.

I like this idea. It encourages O&G players to play the way the army is intended to be played, without preventing them from trying something nutty and taking a risk.

O&G and Empire are the 2 biggest sellers in fantasy - Space Marine levels of biggest sellers. Last i saw they were over half the total sales between them....

O&G are still fairly horrible in 8th, despite their dispel dice tricks being so hideous (most times ending up on more DD than your opponent has PD, a classic ) so getting a new book makes sense. Gets the revenue flowing, which GW definitely needs...

It does strike me as kind of odd, seeing as the current army book isn't that old as of yet.

It's not that old, but it does suck massively.
I'd be happy to see Ogres or TK get redone first though.

Is anyone else really worried that they're gonna make animosity even WORSE?

True, there's that. That's why I'm having high hopes for Jeremy, he's properly enthusiastic about it and that's always good. I mean, have you guys seen his doc video about the Fantasy book? Compared to the other interviewees he's so sincere and enthused about the kickass final product.

That can get in the way of good rules design too though!

Still, he gets a 'wait and see' pass for that!

WEll, i doubt he could make a worse book than the current one....that would really take some doing!

JV seems a good guy, he really captured the skaven spirit (seriously, best "misfire" result ever has to be "suspiciously off target"....) and gave us a book that is strong but not hideous.

I hope O&G aren't next and TKs are.

But that aside. Arachnarok is a cool name for a giant spider.

Would be better if Ragnarorc and several other puns on that hadn't been done already by GW. :(
