I think most people would have missed it if said revelation was more than a single line. Yes you can understand it, but it HURTS YOUR EYES TO READ. If there's more than one sentence written like that, almost nobody will read the whole block of text.

Is not understandable. Are you trying to make a point?

I didn't say it wouldn't require effort. I'm fighting against this notion that what is written is less important than how it is written.

Now if I wrote a scentence like that with the truw answer to life the universe and everything in it Chrysaor686 would have missed it since his policy tells him to ignore it.

Get it now?

That's actually quite a different technique from your normal, average, everyday misspellings (For the most part, people don't switch around the letters in the middle of a word unless it's a typo). And it's not proper spelling that's important to me so much as proper grammar (and minimal use of acronyms). Improper grammar is generally equivalent to laziness, while improper spelling is generally equivalent to honest ignorance, which is certainly more tolerable.

I have a very high tolerance for ESL, for instance, because it's in a completely different ballpark from flat-out lazy writing, and it's easily discernable from an English native who can't be bothered with proper grammar.

This is being thrown in about fifty different directions and they all lead to the same place so I'll leave it at this.

Chrysaor686 wrote: If you don't care about how your thoughts are presented, then why should they matter at all? Generally, if you can't even take a small amount of extra time to capitalize and punctuate your sentences, or you think that using acronyms and shortening words to single letters is completely acceptable, then you didn't spend any time at all giving genuine thought towards the subject at hand, and you deserve to be ignored (at best).

As long as what's written is understandable, the way it is written is less important than what is written.

I don't know about you, but say a post came up in the fiction forum telling a great story with a huge amount of effort put into the characters and dialogue, but had a spelling and grammar mistake every other word. I would much rather read that than a perfectly spelt story about a man walking back and forth across a room.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

I'd like to reiterate Goliath's point that what the OP presented was not text-speak, but leet-speak, and unlike the former, its very purpose was to mislead and hide meaning. The 'single misspellings' example was also... a bit odd.

whatwhat wrote:

This viewpoint is best described as a 'hall of mirrors'. If you're looking down on them, chances are that by looking back up at you and seeing the back of your head from the reflection of the 'ceiling' behind you. There is no real gravity in this equation, so take the piss if you dare... it just might float around.

The above is intended nonsense, but one can choose to make sense of it. Just because I say it's nonsense, that doesn't mean that someone cannot take value from it, and no one can really take that from them regardless of policies. The fact that this thread was ever responded to speaks to our tolerance... I personally came in here as a voyeur, though. The topic was intriguing enough as it referenced itself.
I for one agree with the enforcement of Dakka's policy on correct spelling and punctuation... but what about speaking garbage? At what point do we draw the line with regards to what can be understood?
We don't! Well, they don't. That's a great thing about Dakka - with very few exceptions, the moderators on Dakka do not doctor posts, outright refute the opinions of others, or lock threads at the first sign of an argument. Admittedly, they often carry on a bit too long, but that's just one thing I like about this forum. I'm perfectly willing to take that in return for effort put into composition. It's not like I ever do any less.

Another thing I like about this forum is that my 'joined' time is sort of l33t.

How is ignoring Bruce Willis some kind of crime? And in the very post you quote, he's talking about typos. We've already established that typos =/= laziness.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Whoa, dude. Ignoring Bruce Willis IS a crime, and just in case you think, "What the hell is Bruce Willis gunna do..." bear in mind that like most of Planet Earth's action heroes, Bruce Willis is Chuck Norris's bitch.

No one ignores Chuck's bitches and gets away with it.

Presentation is important. In fact the more important your message is, the more clearly it needs to be communicated.

Communication is a two way process. The writer writes, while the reader may not bother to read if it is too difficult to make out.

Everyone occasionally makes the small mistake -- this is understood and forgiven. People who just throw up a kind of word hash will not get their message across to everyone, no matter how important it might be.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
