Hello
i was wondering why do some people seem to hate single misspellings while others use text talk
for example
misspelled:i was wndring wi do som peple sem two hat singl mispeling wile othrsus text talk
text talk(the really annoying un text sort):eye was 1dering y some pe0p1e h8 51ng13 3155p3111ng yeyel 0243r5 use txt talk
both of the above come from the second line i mean misspelings annoying text talk should be punishable by a life in prison but some people seem to pik out the the most insignificant errors and that is what annoys me the most people like that if somthing is ridicoulusly spelled much like ridiculously as i spell it then i understand but the the really small things why do people do that i dont get it.

Being dyslexic I have noticed these people. And I don't know why, if they can understand what is being said (and text talk doesn't come under that imo) then who cares. Some people get the feeling the english lagnuage is being destroyed by people not bothering but that's kind of pretentious and William Shakespeare and the like would have a field day picking at their 'perfect' english.

Because it's easier/more pleasant to read a well thought out and formatted post with correct spelling than text walls with no punctuation other than commas and full stops? Some of us take the time to make our posts nice to communicate our ideas to others. If you don't feel the need to then don't. We won't mock you for it, but we will think less of you.

My issue with spelling and the modern generation's poor grasp of it is this:
Less than a hundred years ago a big part of the population were still illiterate. Being illiterate basically means that people who can read & write have power over you. This includes such sections of life as the government & religion, you have to take their word for it. Ok we have new media, but you still find that getting to the truth involves doing research and reading, very difficult if you can't read.
All that effort over the last few hundred years is being eroded, leaving people to be conned, tricked and lied to. If that's not bad enough we have the tabloids in the UK who cater for this level reading, making stories basic and simple to read.
|
Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Except that is 133t (leet) speak, not text speak.
Text speak would be me saying "u good m8? wubu2?" (are you good mate? what you been up to?) in order to make a text below a certain number of characters.

Often those well thought out posts take so much time to construct, edit, and analyze for grammatical correctness that you might be two pages into the thread you wanted to post on before you finally hit enter, and if it is a hot thread, that means you want to make yourself understood as quickly as possible in order to keep up with the discusseion. I myself type one-handed because I have a gimp arm, so if I have the occasional typo and someone wants to talk gak about it instead of talking about what I actually posted, understandable and mispelled and all, then they can just suck it with their anal asses. As long as we can be understood we should be accepted.
Take into account also that foreigners who don't speak native English or AmerEnglish are on here and post too. Who is the ass the one with the poor grammar and bad spelling or the one making a big fething deal about it even though they completely understood what was attempted to be comunicated?

Actually, it doesn't take long. (although with only one hand I can see why you couldn't be bothered) And nobody's making a big deal out of it except you, bud. No one has said that you have to spell any way other than the way you feel like spelling at any given moment. Automatically Appended Next Post: And I don't think I've ever seen people to whom english obviously isn't a first language mocked or even corrected here. That's the nice thing about the flags next to the names, lets you know who's new to the language and who just can't be bothered.

You just posted saying you think less of people who make spelling and grammar mistakes. That's a fairly pretentious attitude. Pretentiousness being a common trait in asses.
Me, I will right click whatever shows with a red line underneath it on the spell checker but I'm not going to proof read the dam thing. It's a wargaming forum not a job application.

Maybe I was unclear. PERFECT spelling is nearly impossible in online forums, as you type quickly without thinking very hard, so it's stream-of-thought most of the time. I think less of people who don't even try to make the effort to spell correctly or use grammar, because their posts are harder to read and they generally come off like an excited 12 year old.

I have to agree with others that insist on proper spelling and grammar. I am a firm believer that any message is only as good as the means you use to convey it. So, if your post looks like it was typed by a crack-addled monkey humping a coconut I'm probably not going to pay it much mind.
That being said, if you make honest mistakes in your writing that's an entirely different story. We all have varying levels of education and not all of us speak English as a native language.

This isn't a chatroom. You have plenty of time to go over everything you have written, and you can spend as much time as you please correcting your spelling and grammar mistakes. Spelling has never really been a problem for me, but I do find myself having to reword sentences because I use some words too often. I proofread my posts even after I've posted them, and will edit them numerous times until I achieve my desired result for every single post I leave on the forums.

The basic notion is that the effort you put into communicating your ideas is linked to the effort you put into considering and developing your ideas. If you can't be bothered, then it's probably not worth reading for content, and it's certainly not worth reading for style.
As mentioned, this isn't a chat-room, this is a message board.

Frankly, I enjoy the English language and I get angry when I see shop signs that forget apostrophes (think 'Samirs Kebabs').
As for online, how am I supposed to know anyone is dyslexic? I'm afraid it applies to foreigners too: You could be a brain surgeon or a professor, but if you type in bad English then I am afraid my natural reaction is to just assume you are stupid... It's probably the wrong attitude to take but it's my natural one nonetheless.

It's fairly easy to tell when someone is speaking English as a second language, and when someone makes no active effort at trying to spell correctly whatsoever.
