ace, some of the models look pretty cool, well cooler than necromunda anyway.
Automatically Appended Next Post: i think i can remeber when it came out, there was a big party down at GW and i won a gorgamorka t-shirt that was a thousand times too big for me.

They first did the rules in the White Dwarf magazine, published over several months around issues #220-230. They later did articles for the separate warbands and all sorts making it a fairly complicated thing through the magazine. It must have been so well received that they went ahead and released a whole game for it.

It was definitely Mordhiem as that's what they were calling it even then, I never had any interest in Warmaster which came out later on because the scale was different. They also did a single page cartoon strip to go with the articles which was probably the first time since Thrudd used to feature. When Mordhiem actually got a proper release they but a free figure on the cover of WD, must have been issue #260 I guess.

I think it would have been more popular if they hadn't stipulated it was in a different scale to 40k and fantasy. And the legal warnings against letting you swap and use parts of 40k and fantasy with lord of rings heavily.

New Line Cinema and the Tolkien Estate explicitly put that caveat in their licensing with GW.
It's also why when the movies were still in theaters/just released, any Golden Daemon winners which combined 40k/Fantasy model parts with Lord of the Rings parts would have their photos omitted from White Dwarf/the GW website with the stipulation of "Contractual obligations forbid us from showing this model, due to it being made of combined parts from Lord of the Rings and our standard ranges".
It wasn't until after the movies were done that they can start showing off combination models, since anything now is the direct "interpretation" of Games Workshop's artists and sculptors and the written material from Tolkien.

The licensing agreement with New Line is why you cannot buy LOTR bitz or even individual minis. Lord knows people wanted some of those balrog wings.

Coincidentally the only LotR bits you can buy are the Balrog Wings. Tyranid players really like them
