Of course you see all GW decisions as win/win, but look at this realistically for a second Kan:

It's not about stopping the LOTR range, it's about seeing what the Perry's could do if they came back to Fantasy and 40K. If the Perry's had done the new Beastman range, would we have the Flipper-Feet Muscle Freak Minotaurs or the Pumgagore? Probably not.

If they like doing the LOTR stuff and it acts as a way for them to keep doing their own models, then fine, but surely you can see the benefit of them dipping their feet into the other two ranges every now and again.

As numerous people have pointed out...

The Perrys are doing what they're good at. Which is realistically scaled models with pretty damn good detail involved, and Games Workshop gets to keep them on the sculpting staff to do other projects occasionally.
So please, do tell:
How is that not win/win for Games Workshop and the Perry Brothers?

Who was that intended for?

Because I'm fairly sure I didn't say anything about Lord of the Rings being a waste of time...

Was just making sure I didn't miss something or make an insinuation that came across as "LOTR IS A WASTE OF TIME! RABBLE RABBLE!".

LotR is not your game, we get that. But it IS a viable use of GW's resources. The fact that in your god-forsaken neck of the woods no one plays the game doesn't make it unviable. Believe me, GW still sells quite a chunk of LotR, even if it is rather overpriced, along with the rest of their range.

Personally these dwarves and goblins are the first things that they have produced that I have been tempted by for a long time. I haven't played LotR for over 3 years now. Nice stuff. Their LotR dwarves are pretty much the best stunted folk models I see out there, after Hasslefree's. Never liked their WFB "eggs with legs" look, and much preferred the more realistically proportioned LotR range.

Don't like the Cave Drake though. What's going on with all the mad dreadlocks? Not my bag baby...

Yeah, no one plays LOTR in my god-forsaken neck of the woods that just happens to be in the same state as what used to be the US headquarters and the highest concentration of GW stores in the country.

The drake looks ok. too bad it's metal. If it was p[lastic I'd probably get one or 2 to use as WFB Dragons.

edit: un-derped my post.

I seem to recall that the esteemable Perry brothers sculpted the new-ish IG plastic command squads, as well as the superb Empire Archers/Huntsmen kit, so they can, and do sculpt for the "main lines" from time to time.

Now if only they were re-doing the whole Bretonnian line to return it to its 5th edition glory...

Looking forward to seeing the Drakes go on sale as backstock a year or two from now when no one has bought them from many a FLGS. They'll make great fodder for Exodite conversions.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

The Perrys and Brian Nelson did the Cadian Command Squad, Nelson did the Catachan one solo.

Perrys+Nelson are also responsible for that fantastic Archers/Huntsmen kit. Nelson did the dying Orc.

Is this supposed to mean that you're sad because nobody near you plays, or is this a lesson about how to make an irrelevant appeal to authority?

I'm sad because no one plays the game and because it's an albatross hanging ariund GW's neck that's wasting resources that they could have put into things like plugging the holes in the existing Warhammer armies. And aince the scale isn't usable with Warhammer, it means that the models have no use to me.

Purely your opinion(and grossly exaggerated hyperbole). There's a dedicated group where I live, and a group in Louisiana. The fact that it makes a profit for GW(as shown every year they give us the breakdown) proves it's neither an albatross nor a waste of resources.

The fact that people continue to spout this nonsense every time the game is mentioned is the very reason that people don't openly play it in many game stores.

Ahh ok so it was an irrelevant appeal to authority after all then. Who cares if where you live no one plays? It doesn't change the fact that the game makes GW money because somehwere somebody is buying the models and playing the game. Which brings me back to irrelevant appeal to authority.

Consider the obverse situation:

I consider 40K and WHFB to be an albatross (sorry for the burning ears albby) around GW's neck wasting resources on what could be spent on the LotR license and the only reason why those piss poor systems arent dead yet is that too many people have already too much invested in them to simply drop them like a sack of hot garbage that they are. Likewise I am angry that I cannot use Lascannons and Screaming bells in my LotR armies since they have no use to me.

See? The exact same thing you said only reversed (with m own brand of hyperbole thrown in for good measure). And equally just as stupendously ludicrous as yours.

Quoted for muh' fuggin' truthery.

Why play in a store where people poke fun at playing a different dollie game with different dollies? Oh, the sweet elitist irony there.

I wouldn't be too proud to be on a hobby high horse siding with 40K or WHFB. Thats a ponderous tower right there that even toddlers can topple.
