I normally talk to my opponent, idle chit chat. Usually about the game we are playing. But every now and then I wander off for a short time to oversee other games, and check how everyone else is doing.

Depends on who I'm playing. If it's somebody who's going to take no more than 30 seconds in Movement, I don't mind hanging around and watching. But when I'm playing against our resident Imperial Guard player (who runs horde + basilisks, not a Chimera in sight), I'm really not above wandering off to get a drink or flipping on my DS to play for a few minutes. When I say this player is slow at movement, I mean it - usually takes a good 5-6 minutes per turn in movement alone. And he wonders why he's always the last game finished

And come on, 26 AC at level 6? I made a legitimate human fighter at level 5 that hit 29 AC (+2 Full Plate, +2 Heavy Steel Shield, Dodge, Shield Focus, +2 Dex bonus). Managed it within the wealth level of a level 5 PC.

In the movement face I usually just watch and comment on things. If a model gets knocked off the building its, "Weee!" and other such silly things. Sometimes, usually around turn 3, I may wander briefly to see what some of my other friends are up to in their battles, but I come right back and before the shooting starts. Other than that just chitchat, banter, and plenty of heretic comments. Usually this is only against friends and people I know, but then again... I know pretty much the whole store so unless I'm playing someone that just moved into town or is just passing through i get to make silly somewhat childish but amusing comments.

Wait and talk. I think it's really rude to walk away from the table during the other players turn, and I hate when others do it to me. The only time I've left is when I was starting and some guy walked in with some Eldar Titan. Every went to look though, including my opponent, so I guess it's ok.

Agreed, I stay at the table and chat to my opponent, I might take and return the odd text message but again that's out of politeness to the person on the other end of the phone and because I have a few personal reasons to not ignore text messages. I find the idea of trying to psyche out your opponent to be counter to my idea of good sportsmanship and probably would not play again with an opponent who tried to do that to me, successfully or otherwise. I'm there to play the game and have fun, I'm not there to be win at all costs or to be the latest W/L/D stat for someone who is.

I always talk to my opponent if I can or a friend who is close by. I deem it rude to walk away from the table constantly to do other things. It shows dis interest and is unfriendly.

If im waiting for someone to show up then I break out my DS and game like never before.

Inside that little light in your refridgerator

Between games: Paint, plot new lists, text people, make small talk with others, and occasionally get a youngling involved in the hobby (for some reason I'm the guy that kids come up to asking for advice and stuff. I don't even work there )

Between turns: Watch intently so as to avoid missing anything, and make small talk with my opponent.

Well part of the game is trying not to get caught! It's great fun I suggest you try it out, school is a good place for this but a FLGS works too!

Usually with my nids, i'm putting the dead away. With my Tau I spend their whole turn planning on what will effectively shoot the gak out of what the best so I can go through my shooting phase with a high rate of speed and make him feel as if he lost so many models so fast and hopefully that will allow him to make mistakes.

You seem to be confusing the concepts of respect and manners, the latter being something you appear to be lacking in, reading your description above.

This.

I sit there and watch them. You're actively engaging and playing them, not acting like your not interested. They asked you, or you asked them, and you/they accepted, so they deserve as much respect as you would give your closest friend.

If you texted while I did my turn, that would be the last game we would play.

Yet, mind you when the day comes I get a text message saying... so and so just got hurt, in accident, died, etc. Please come home now or something. And I don't reply, it's good to know I can say, well it was my opponent's turn.

Silly Americans. It is COULDN'T Care less. As in, there is not 1 iota of lack of caring that you can descend down to.

"Could care less" is just gibberish nonsese. Much like your justification for meandering away from games....

I am curious to know how many accidents your friends/family/acquaintances have? Also whether any of them have terminal illness or are in palliative care.

The odds of you receiving a text message containing the content you have listed is directly related to those questions. But generally for most of us, the chance of that text message is fairly low, so generally you are being rude.

Also no one said you cannot read the text message, checking your mobile every now and then isn't overly rude (I myself normally place my wallet and mobile on one corner and occasionally check the phone) but being consistently attached to the thing every time your opponents turn comes around and essentially ignoring him is rude. That said there is nothing stopping you checking that vital message that your poor dog Willis just died, and politely informing your opponent that a personal issue has arisen and if you could take a short break while you sort things out. Most gamers I have met are reasonable and would be more than happy to accommodate you.

It doesn't hurt to be 'offline' for an hour or two on a saturday while you knock out some 40k. The world most probably won't end, and if it does you'll be dead anyway.

One thing I might point out is that it seems this thread assumes it's always someone you just happened to meet up at a FLGS (or at least some people are treating it that way). I don't actually play with anyone up at my FLGS that I don't know, since nobody actually ever comes in there other than the 6 or so regulars.

To be honest, I actually do have multiple members of my family who are ill, and or need to be constantly kept on.

I might be a rare case, but these things do happen.

Also... maybe I should make this clear. I play at my FLGS I know everyone there, and that's why I treat people certain ways.
You are either friend or foe. Straight up, and I'm not asking for your respect neither, if you don't like it, so be it, "pack up" and leave. I'll be just fine without you.

/thread.
