I take it them I'm one of the few who wouldn't go for a gun first? Granted it may have a lot to do with how they're not as widely available here (I can't even tell you the closest place i might buy one), but after numerous conversations with my friends I'd settle with a two single edged blades, preferably the blades would be wide extending the length of my forearm +1".
They'd have a couple of advantages namely every zombie within earshot aren't gonna come for me if I use one, and 2, I don't have to worry about bullets (I imagine these will start running low for the general surviver after the first month). The major downfall would of cause be the range, but at the distance where that starts becoming a major advantage I wouldn't be shooting anyway, chances are they haven't noticed me yet or I can get to a safe place before they reach me.
the sawed off nagant is for use only when you need damage power but concealed...i have played that guntype in a game and it even sucked there^^
not the standard nagant tho. would love to fire the real thing one day...

If you're in Germany, dig around a bit you may be able to find one in the ground.
*Note: Not making fun of Germany, just making fun of the Mosin Nagant.
Although to tell the truth there may be a surplus bunker around there from the Cold War that could have some refurbished ones there.
If you're only stationed in Germany and are an american citizen then you should have a Nagant seeing as though most of them cost around $70. Mine was $100 after shipping and the gun transfer fee. It came with a nice ammo pouch, oil can, and bayonet.

It's also where the zombies are.
Not so much, if you're jumping into a horde then you probably deserve to die, same if you're making big loud shouts as you attack. But if you're picking them off or just need to get past one or two melee is the way to go.
As for a two-handed axe, I did give taking one some thought, though in the end I decided it would be to heavy and cumbersome for me. On the plus side good clean hit to the neck will sever it enough that, unlike some guns or my choice of blades, you don't have to worry if they've fallen because you did enough damage or if you've just knocked them down.

In the book World War Z, the whole number of zombies vs number of bullets thing is addressed pretty well. Basically these shovels that are sharpened on the edges are given to all the soldiers because its more cost effective than bullets when you are dealing with 3.5-4 billion zombies.
While in math class, I was talking with my friend Asma (she is a Muslim), and I kid you not, the new kid tried to join our conversation, asking "So can you speak Muslim?"
...
He was serious. Quite sad.
AND if for some reason you're think "why is that stupid?", the language is called Arabic, and take a wild guess at the region it is most commonly spoken in.
Seriously though, its the best zombie book I've ever read. Almost frightening in how realistic they take things....and its shamblers, not sprinters. No fast zombies here!

Hell, if you find a Kar 98 you could trade it in for 4 or 3 Nagants. Something about helmets with holes in them and high price tags. There's an antique store in Lexington that has a Vietnam era helmet with a hole almost dead center of the forhead that costs more than a similar helmet. I wouldn't want a helmet with a hole in it in my house though, that's an awful lot of bad luck to bring into a place where you live.

Thank you Id put mine on that line along with you. Hell even 250 yards would be pushing on the lucky shot line
I did a few sums about that.
Assume the sniper rifle is shot at a target 250 metres away and its bullet velocity at 200 metres is 700 metres per second.
Assume the target is a man jogging or running at 16 kmh.
The bullet will take 0.35 seconds to reach the target.
During this interval, the target will have moved 1.5 metres, so the sniper needs to aim that far ahead as well as accounting for the ballistic arc.
Not easy.
However in video games there is no flight time or bullet drop.
