To tell the truth, you think that the country that houses a tabletop strategy game giant would have better strategy skills. They need to set up some heavy weapons teams and flamers, the most armor a protestor could have is what, a 5+?

They expect everyone to discuss differences of opinions on the rules beforehand.

My friends and I get the rules down pretty well, I guess when you have 1,000+ people trying to decide what's difficult terrain and what isn't it gets messy.

Unwashed protesters = difficult terrain.

Cops on edge = hazardous terrain.

Wasn't kettleing being held up as a British Police inovation to be proud of in the last couple of years?

If I remamber correctly there was quite so set too at a foreign G8 (or 20?) meeting on continental Europe. Then we had our go at it at Docklands and the papers held it up as look how we do it compared to jonny foriegner. The papers soon change their tunes to suit.

Personally I think the Police show far more restraint than I could. I wouldn't be able to not drop the nut on the first posh voiced crusty that started shouting in my face.

This article reminds me of a story that a rather well spoken ex captain in the Green Jackets told me of angry crowds of locals in Malaya (I think) back in the day. It was getting a bit hairy so they brought up the Flame Thrower sprayed it around with the igniter off in front of the crowd for a bit and announced that they were going to take a cigerette break now so if they could keep it down a little - Instant crowd dispersal!

Now thats we need the upper classes sometimes!

we need riot vans with hoses this powerful

And tear gas/cs gas/ flamers that spray pepper-spray, whatever it takes to keep rioters under control. plus we would only have to use the stuff 2/3 times because people would be afraid that we would use it, it could just sort of hang around, like a 400lb bouncer.

also I can see why they thought ketteling would be a good idea but I think that sudents (as I am one) just have this "oh, they're trying to do this, lets do the opposite/disrupt it as much as possible.

also also some of the hardcore rioters [christmas tree man etc.] probably couldn't give two hoots about student tuition fees, they just wanted a riot and they got one.
