My idea, and this was years ago, was to have the US back Israel for a few reasons.

1) They can act as our proxy since they are in the middle east
2) We can provide them protection
3) We can regulate them, and stop them from expanding their borders
4) We can use Israel to distribute world aid from us to them
5) any nuclear attack or major use of WMDs would be directed at Israel first, leaving the USA a secondary target (tactical reason)
6) Pressure the UN to step in and start peace talks

I mean the USA has the ability to do so. The problem is, well it is religion. We could have fully backed Israel, given them military power but under the conditions they WOULD NOT expand their borders and if they did expand their borders they would forfeit all aid from us. Then since the USA already pumps tons of foreign aid into the middle east every year we can use Israel as a proxy, which makes them look like less war mongering asshats. The we put pressure on Israel to not attack, and to set up peace talks and use a system of justice that does not revolve around religion.

or....

We just nuke all of them from orbit and just sort it all out later.
