Perhaps her dad spent $2000 on this young lady's musical career (if it counts as one). A lot more than $2000 was spent between the video shoot alone which could cost $2000 just for an hour of equipment rental and a guy to operate a camera. Add on to the video cost a fully mastered recording, the process of which involves a tad more than 4 hours, which is about how much time that would get you at the rate the intermediate level studio I engineer for's rates. Whoever quoted that number either doesn't know how much more was spent on making it that was not by her daddy, or is a liar trying to dispell the idea that she is a spoiled little rich girl for the sake of an illusion of integrity. The monitor speakers and accoustic room treatments necessary to mix pop music to an industry standard cost far more than $2000 and that is without engineering time for the vocal corrections, equipment, mixing board that could cost a quarter of a million by itself, microphones that sometimes cost around $2000 and many can cost much more, the list adds up. $2000 can get you a crusty recording of a garage band playing in a basement and a video that looks like it was shot on a cellphone live on location with no lighting effects. This video, good song or otherwise (it's part of my job to be as indifferent to content as possible), is obviously quite a piece of production work. The $2000 figure may have been a number thrown out to dispell the rich girl stereotype, much as many so-called artists appear in their videos playing an instrument that isn't really them playing, to dispell the stereotype that others make the music for them. It's just part of the game.

It's possible that they rented a studio space and didn't buy all of the equipment themselves though, right?

I think they own the recording area and equipment themselves, as it appears it's part of their business plan to sell their ability to make a music video to people who want it.

Superior music taste is defined by directly throwing out the names of individual musicians instead of bands. Especially if only the last name is given, then you really know what you're talking about. It's also good to make up attributes that are hard to define (things like groove, heart, emotion) and argue that your last-named person has more or the other has less. Example:

I for one think Wooten could teach Claypool a lesson in soul.

No it didn't.
The use of auto-tune to correct an inability to sing in a very few cases, has caused a tiny amount of damage.

You do realise that auto-tune is used to produce a large variety of vocal effects?
It doesn't mean that the person can't sing, it means that they can't produce an effect that is humanly impossible, and so autotune does it for them.

In all seriousness, if you don't like it, don't listen. It's really that simple. The main target for the industry is a 14 year old girl. This is perfect fodder for that.

Unsigned hyper talents will stay that way because the big wigs in the music industry can't control them enough. Don't worry about it though, the industry is dying anyway.

Regrettably, I think you may be correct on this...

Absolutely definetly. Originally appeared in 1986 as a single. One of New Order's more popular songs, and one of their best. If Bret Easton Ellis' books are to be taken as evidence (don't blame me, I wasn't around to go clubbing then), the song had a fair amount play at clubs.

Oh, and it's fething amazing and no cover will ever be able to do it proper justice.

What music do you listen to?

What do you mean, like genre's, or actual bands?

Personally I like Progressive Rock, Heavy Metal, and Jazz best.

Heavy metal is as much a formula as "pop" music. Any genre oriented musical style is just following the instructions on the package. Metal involves guitarists who learn how to play up and down a scale over and over until they can do it really quickly, thus are considered "musical" because they learned how to perform a certain trick, but its still just a formula it gets plugged into. Toss on some skull tattoos, goaties, and the obligatory long hair or bald look instead of a boob job and flashy outfit and you add the last touch to the formula.

I'd assume that that is why artists that most people assume to use auto-tune seem to have incredibly showy stage performances, whereas other artists tend not to.

On the vocal effects point, ke$ha was criticised for one of her songs, I think it was called "Take it off" or something similar, as many people were shouting "She's using vocal effects!! that obviously means she can't sing!", it doesn't actually mean that though, it means that we can't tell if she can sing or not, but in actuality the voice effect is interesting.

I think a lot of pop concerts are largely backing tracks for the layers of vocals with maybe one real vocal going on faded into and out of the mix as the song churns along. The black-eyed-peas performance at the superbowl had autotuned sounding voices in it too.

What would Yeenoghu do?

I am a fan, though they aren't generally considered jazz fusion. They're more of a prog rock band containing jazz elements (the use of saxophone being the most smack-in-the-face obvious indicator), which isn't uncommon amongst that genre - take Soft Machine or Van De Graaf Generator (who I prefer, incidentally - check out 'Pawn Hearts'. Evil.) for example. I suppose they veer into that territory later on, but it isn't what they're known for really. They're known for stuff like this:

Yeah. Fripp AND Bruford.

I agree that King Crimson is a prog band first and foremost, but it's possible for bands to be several genres at once in fact sometimes a single song can be considered several genres "21st Century Schizoid Man"

for example, has elements of jazz fusion, prog and hard rock all mashed together. Led Zeppelin isn't just a hard rock band they do heavy metal, blues rock and folk rock as well.

I suppose what I'm trying to say some artists like to branch out and experiment/fuse other genres into there work, like the song you showed me sounds quite hard rock as well.

I probably shouldn't have used the term popular music, like I'm some kind of hipster douche.

I meant the generic and repetitive Pop music, like the kind this thread was started over.
