Time for an update, here's 2 models I just finished. This was the first time I painted more than 1 model at a time and I'd say it'll be the last time for now, I'm just too slow to make it work. A lot of things went wrong, mainly my GW standard brush splitting and being completely useless, I still can't believe how bad quality the brush is, splitting after 4 models is just terrible. Luckily the next time I paint I'll be using a set of Winsor Series 7 brushes.

Anyway, enough moaning. I think I improved the weapons and the mouth on these models, I used red on the gums/mouth, highlighted with Dheneb Stone and then washed with Sepia, before I just did Dheneb Stone over the black basecoat and left it at that. As for the weapons I've added some bronze which I've dulled down several times with both Badab Black and Devlan Mud, I think they look much better than my first attempt where it was just plain Gunmetal. Overall I think these 2 are a step up from my first, I'll post a shot of the 3 together at the end.

Well your improving at a rapid pace, you might want to change your title. I really like the Boyz, the gums look great. I have to ask because I can't find a leather colour I'm happy with, what colour are you using for yours?

Your brush shouldn't have split already, try not to get paint in the ferrule and make sure you clean them properly otherwise you super pricey W&N7 will do the same.

Oh and I might as well say it because others will, you need to drill your barrels.

I clean my brushes after every use. I ordered some proper cleaner, restorer and preserver so my Series 7 stay perfect. And yeah, I know about the barrels but I can't afford the drill yet.

The leather brown is Calthan Brown which is a Citadel Foundation paint.

Nice start Mr H, just wanted to point something minor out, you have painted Ork 2s hand green when he has a glove on his right hand.

Ha, yeah. I thought it was a glove but decided to paint it as a bare hand anyway, it looks OK IMO, you can't really tell unless you know.

I tried something different today, here's my attempt at a "winter Ork", I'm not that happy with how he turned out, the skin doesn't look as fluid as my other Boyz but hey ho, you live and learn.

Yeah the gums don't look as hot either, and I don't think the pink on the fingernails is working.

Personal I'm not a fan of non-green Orks but it's always worth trying new things

I had a real problem with the mouth, it's like it wasn't as detailed as the rest which hurt me. It was fun trying something new but it was a step back quality wise. I'm going to take some days off before my next model.

You're too kind, but I'm still very much a n00b. My first models were pretty good I think but I'm not really improving now which I want to rectify, I like to try and improve every model even if it's only very, very slightly, like adding some bronze to the weapons to cut through the silver on silver on silver. I just read a couple of tutorials for Ork skins that are way easier to do then what I'm doing and IMO looks much better (Bleached Bone or Yellow basecoat then Devlan Mud followed by 2x Thraka green washes). Doing my skin this way would save me so much time and it looks great, at least in the tutorial it looked great, I may have to try it tomorrow. I'm still pretty baffled by highlighting and if I try it, it looks pretty bad. One thing I want to improve on is speed, it takes me about 4x as long to do a mini as it should.

Silly reason, some woman made a painting DVD and on the front cover she had her puppies out on display in a very obvious manner, a MOD said don't talk about it and I talked about it. Sorry it wasn't something more juicy!

Haha, for a good 10 seconds there I was like "why would he get banned for commenting on a woman's dogs" before it hit me I must be more tired than I think . .

Your boyz look great; I suggest that you slowly lighten up your green and get small highlights on the skin. I'll take a picture of one of my orks asap because my cat stole the usb cord to my camera.

I just finished my first Nob and I was so happy with it, until I accidentally broke the arm off. I feel so gutted right now, he was easily my best model and I ruined him at the last minute. I glued it back on but looking at it you can see it's not flush and it's a little high, all in all I am so upset with myself, it could have been so easily avoided but I'm never happy and I have to keep pushing and prodding and poking trying to get everything perfect and yeah, sometimes that bites you in the ass and my ass is currently bleeding.

Here he is anyway:

It's just so disappointing you know? I spent like 7 hours on him, he was clearly my best paint job ever and I was really happy with him and then pow, I break off the arm like an idiot for no reason really. I wasn't completely happy with the arm so I tried to remove it and redo it but it snapped instead and now I'm left with an arm that looks 100x worse than it did before. I swear God is just looking down like "LOL OWNED FOOL!". I guess I'll get over it, at least my skills are improving and I'm really happy with this new skin technique, and it's so easy and fast.

if you are using these to play the game and not just to paint then 90% of the time no one is going to notice that from 2-3 feet when he is in a mob of boyz so d/w. but he is defo looking very very good indeed.

and can i just say 7 hours is really quite impressive as painting goes. i can rarely keep on a unit for anything more then 3 at a time.

all in all, well done

Yeah, I feel for you. I am constantly dropping things while modeling/painting. It's definitely annoying.

Your first models look far better than mine ever were. Nice work there sir.

I have to say, I could never bring myself to paint orks anything but green, but that blue one looked really darned cool. I've seen red skinned orks here and I really did like those, but they are not propa orks. Unless they are just fooling around.

Anyway, keep it up, I have marines too, but I really enjoy painting orks as well. It is a nice switch in painting styles.

And I'm spent! This model took about 15 hours total over 4 days which is about the same amount of time I've spent on all my other models put together. I'm hoping you'll think it was worth, I do!

I've been lacking motivation lately, hence the lack of updates but I picked up some old school Orks from eBay and I'm looking forward to painting them, the old models just have a certain charm about them. I tell you what though, they're tiny! Even the bigger one is dwarfed by a regular Ork boy.

Like the other guys said, your first paint job is a lot better than my first!

The orkz, wow, just wow, ill have to say you have probably done a lot better job on those orkz than what ill ever do, ive never actually painted 40k orkz before. Im not a big fan of the blue on the ork warboss, i would have gone for a nice dark red!

One other thing, you could paint a black spot on the end of the gun barrels rather than drilling them out, that's what i used to do.
