I had planned on taking footdar and then my forward scouts told me to expect at least two triple manticore leaf blower lists with hellhouns support and that just didn't sound fun, so I took the boys in black.

The Tyranids' unusually good performance last year in the preliminaries last year had a lot to do with the wacky KP mission that was almost an auto-win for horde armies. They didn't fare well in the semi-finals.

Turnout was light compared to last year. Almost everyone had some kind of Marine, except for me and one Tau player. The scenarios were okay, if kind of stupid at times. They seemed poorly thought out to me, especially the second one with the varying costs for the objectives.

My army was: Shining Spears with Autarch, Farseer, Howling Banshees, Fire Dragons, 2 squads of Dire Avengers (all Aspect warriors in Wave Serpents), Harlequins in a Falcon, Guardian Jetbikes, 2 Fire Prisms. It was a list built with the cunning strategy of taking every model I own.

I played the Grey Knights round 1, on a city table, and concentrated my forces on one flank. His army was a largely static and shooting-oriented, so once I killed his two Storm Ravens I was able to roll of the flank and kill his army piecemeal, using the terrain to block LOS to my army. I only lost a few things and almost wiped him out.

Round 2 was a mechanized Space Wolf army. His opening salvo of shots (from 1 Landraider, 1 Long Fang Squad, and 1 Dreadnought) killed 3 of my tanks and some 15 of my infantry. It was bad. Luckily my two bike squads were in reserve and came on from the corner of the long table edge, outflanking his army, and proceeded to kick butt. The Shining Spears, supported by the Fire Dragons, killed some 35 Space Wolves + vehicles, while my dismounted Harlequins and Dire Avengers managed to tie up and eventually defeat Logan Grimnar and some terminators (Fortune with an Invulnerable save is really good). At the end of the game my army was shattered, but there were only 2 damaged Rhinos left for the Space Wolves.

Round 3 was more Space Wolves, an especially obnoxious army with a bunch of Thuderwolf cavalry, a bunch of Long Fangs, a bunch of Razorbacks, and a bunch of small Grey Hunter units. The game started well as getting the first turn and the Dawn of War set up allowed me to get the jump on his largely static army. Again I shifted my forces to concentrate on one flank and some serious firepower saw about a third of his army killed on turn 2. But some utterly incompentent close combat against three Thunderwolves gutted the center of my army and stalled my momentum, so his Razorbacks and Longfangs showered me with love for several turns. Luckily his shooting was almost as bad as my assault so I was able to out-shoot his Longfangs with my tanks and eke out a victory.

3 good games, and the last 2 were real knife fights. I can't wait for round 2.

Madness is however an affliction which in war carries with it the advantage of surprise - Winston Churchill

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Even though you do not see so many Space Wolves around this days as you did a year ago, the army is still a power house.

The other thing that leaps out is how well the Tyranids did. I wonder if it could be a couple of factors. The long time limit so that they can finish their games, and what I think is the biggest factor is the point limit. With the extra points they get to fill out their often neglected heavy support slots, or just fill up with an overwhelming amount of troops.

Also a lot of people are commenting on how low the turn out was. They had about 25 players in my store last year and they had about 14 this year. Here is the kicker though, at the same time as the 'Ard Boyz, they ran a Warmachine wrath book release tournament that had 20 people attending. I know that it is just one event and you can't make much of it, but that might be an ominous sign of GWs health at least in the Phoenix area. It seems like Warmachine is taking off, and GW games are declining.

Steelcity

Or perhaps a dissatisfaction with the 'ard boyz events in general. Every year the prize support gets stricter, the event rules dont improve or get more sloppy (like this year they didnt even bother to use the 'ard boyz stationary), no cool swag like 2009 'ard boyz and in general the staticness of 5th ed isn't helping

I know there are people who don't play Mech but after playing in a lot of tournaments and now running a lot of events its like I see the same list played on 90% of the boards.. Yes some may be called "space wolves", "Imperial guard", "dark eldar" or "grey knights" but for the most part its just a bunch of transports running around with random units inside

In either case, the turnout for Pittsburgh wasn't noticeably lower.. Maybe a little lower than last year. WFB is doing awful tho

5 whole players showed from the 12 who signed up. Bye system was implemented that gave the bye player a major win.

Draigowing player had 1 wipeout loss, 1 minor loss and 1 massacre.

Grr I had 2 minor wins and a minor loss and got knocked out. Any scoring system that allows someone with a lesser win loss record place needs to be reworked.

I got shafted because I should have had the third bye, giving me 17 points instead of 3. A guy who already had a bye and had been massacred dropped out instead of playing. I believe they also gave him the bye points, so he actually placed over me, only playing 1 game. Lol I'm done whining about it.....at least I had 2 wins over 2 really good players.
