I am sorry, I think the damage looks horrible, and the painted damage makes it look even worse, I think a perfectly good model has been ruined....
One MAJOR problem I have with adding battle damage to vehicles and models is that it looks deliberate, and un-realistic. I have added battle damage to many models in the past, and one of things that absolutely needs to be done to ensure scale accuracy is to thin the area that the damage will be applied.
So, in other words, you start sanding, grinding, and filing the backside of the model, that way when you actually "punch through" the surface does not look abnormally thick and out of scale.
I will give you a 10 for effort, but a 3 for the result...dont let that discourage you, just do better next time.

@ jordanis; Yes the battle damage wounds that are melted were created by lascannons, melta weapons, and plasma weapons.
@Redfinger; Thank you for being honest and giving me an alternative way of doing things, and thqt way will work in some areas but not all. Also you concept of sanding does not really fit what I see as the material called Ceramite. To me cerami
Te from the way the fluff describes it, is a dense but light compound. As such the compound can take an extreme amount of punishment before actually breaking/melting/breached. If you sand the area it seems more deliberate than anything IMHO, though it is something I will try before giving final judgement.
Looking up actual damage that tanks have taken and aircraft have taken and comparing them to my work. I see that it would be best to add in protuding areas to the bolter damaged area in order to I crease the realism.

I will have to agree with Redfinger, though I dont think it is "horrible" it does look a bit over done. Sometimes all you need is just a few spots to really bring out a feel of battle damage. It just seems too random on this model, and some of the damage is rather large. And I think what Redfinger is saying by sanding, is to sand the opposite side of the damage to make it thiner, so when you punch a hole into it, its not a super thick one, but something more realistic in thickness. Like the wings for the stormraven, fluff wise, I would assume they are hallow, because there needs to be fuel lines, hydrolic lines and frame work, and same goes for the tail of the storm raven as well. But again, im not completely bashing it. Its a good try but it would of been better if there was more planning involved in the damage.

I think the silver around the holes needs to be brought back in. It isn't going to peel the paint away that far from the wound. It will just be on the hole. Eventually if the holes aren't repaired, the paint will begin to peel farther out. Or if you want it to be peeled that far out, it needs to be more random and sharp. Right now they just look like blobs of paint, it should have angles and should look like claw marks.

@ PraetorDave; Very good point. Thankfully it still is in the basic painting stage so that should be each enough to fix. I will add those changes in the next batch. Thank you very much for the insight!
@ EmperorsChampion; Hmmm all good points but your post feels more like bashing than anything. Let me explain why; you gave great criticism but did not back it up with an idea to fix the problem.
As someone that has worked on US F-18C Hornets I will say that you are correct in many aspects though the craft maintains certain areas (like the front of the wings) that have nothing there and are almost solid to help stability and such. Also the pilots can control where fuel and hydraulics flow even if this would make landing a dangerous operation to both the crew and the personnel assisting in the landing op.
Do realize that people have shown pictures where "vital" areas were hit but the craft made it safely back.
It likes like I will have to actually post the background story behind this particular Stormrave both full wise and an actual game.
No I will still save the full stories but I will say that via the fluff this raven was ambushed in a ravine during a combat night drop by Chaos Marine and Renegade Guard forces.
The planning process was not rushed but it could have been better. I could have easily drawn out the damage areas and worked around that. This is my failimg and I will fix this on raven 2 & 3

So doing some indepth research (and I also work at a VFA Squadron for the US Navy) on actual bullet holes in aircraft wings, damage etc. The F-18 is actually made with the fact in mind that it cna lose half a wing and an engine and still land rather safely on a pitching carrier in heavy winds (60-90 mph)
From the pictures i ahve seen from our own aircraft and actual bullet damage (from terroist forces) PraetorDave
is 100% correct.
I have also looked into GardenNinja's battle damage tutorial and it BESTS represents what I am looking for.

I can see why someone could think it looks like it has too much damage.... But at the same time, thats kinda the point. Correct me if I'm wrong but you are looking for that, "How the heck is that thing still flying?!" That everyone got from seeing the pic of Sweet Pea right? I mean its supposed to look like the attackers had nothing better to do then turn all their firepower on the stormraven! I really like it! I have done no battle damaging before as I am new to 40K and haven't done much. I think you have a beautiful model here, anything that I may have said I believe was already stated. Like with pulling the silver in a little. I'm sure you've seen what bullet splatter on metal looks like for when it punches through and when it doesn't. But yes I really like it and keep up the good work! Can't wait to see more!

Looks great, I only have one little note, I think having one big chunk of damage looks far better then have 50 little dings and scratches. But, that is just my personal taste, and I think it'll look great when your 100% finished with it,

I think its your models and if you like them, take the criticism in stride.
Red does offer you some EXCELLENT how to make things look more realistic, thanks for that! added it to my repetuare as well!
I would say for the burns and scorches, look into getting a heat wand. I got one from Micheal's for about $20 and I don't have to wear out my drill bits to heat things up.
consider adding some interior things if you're going to do damage. some copper wire that has been unstranded placed behind larger pieces of armor blown away, exposed wiring coming through, even maybe just a touch of red and yellow highlights on the edges as if tracer fire had punched through (or melta's)
I am a huge proponent of doing what you want to your models. you paid for them. do what you feel good with!
take some tips from static war modeler's. they have a LOT of practice doing this.

Thank you all.
@Benamint; Thank you very much, your right, the WHOLE point is to show what an Imperial Guard ambush Squad CAN do to a random stormraven, and the AMAZING durability of said raven.
@Klogger; Your correct, but it does not match the story at all, NOW if I was doing a wreck I would easily have done that.
I can even picture it; a downed Raven nose first into a jagged precepities, smoke trailing out the back hatch and engines in odd angles. The Techmarine head first through the glass, and a lone marine struggling to pull himself up the open front hatch. One marine still strapped in but clearly dead due to the big piece of debris through his neck that has nearly decapitaed him. A wing blown clear off from the detonation of a Bloodstrike Missile and a HUGE melted gouge on the starboard flank that tore off the attached Dreadnought.
What hit it you ask? A orbital defense laser.
@Rimmy; You are 100% correct, which is why I have not really sweated it. ALL criticism is good AS LONG as you give a way to fix the problem if something is wrong. IF you do not then its not criticism at all but useless opinions.

I like the area damage around the impact holes. Looks really good.
I like the way your headed with the painting the chipping effect around the impact holes.
Were you going to do any damage to the engines? Possibly having one a smoker?

@Latch66; it is an idea. I was thinking of having it look like it was blown out by having the other look like it was still on.
The painting as others have stated needs a HEAP of work and it happens to be my weakest point of my hobby skills. . .
