Compared to some of the chest eagles on the tactical squads I'm super disappointed in that detail. Granted, their poses made it hard to paint them in the first place! Glad you like them though! And, if my blog has encouraged one person to start posting models, then I'm happy! Go forth and post!

Ive started my own CF's quite a while ago (shameless ad: link in my sig) but I always procrastinate on the ink wash

I have 10 scouts (two squads) a command squad, a dread, and some other stuff waiting to be washed and posted

I'm really liking the oldschool terminators with the lightning bolts all painted in that bright yellow. It draws the eye well, and doesn't look out of place at all.

And I'm a sucker for that clean look. Keep it up man.

Glad to hear!
I'm working on a 2nd ed Devastator squad at the moment. Unfortunately I won't be able to get pictures up of them until after I get back from San Francisco on the third, but they're looking pretty good for the "I love my bolter" old plastics!

Out of curiosity, how did you get the Crimson Fist logo on the ammo drum? Did you greenstuff that sucker yourself, or did it come from somewhere? (Like, say, the Chapter icons off a Drop Pod sprue?)

I must say, by the way, that this is an awesome army. I always associated the Crimson Fists with being the default Space Marine chapter in my head. There's an old 40k ad in the men's room at my games store, that's been there for as long as I can remember, showing the Crimson Fists fighting on top of a pile of bodies. I don't know if it's just sixteen years of staring at a heroic last stand while cradling my junk, but they have a soft spot in my heart, and this army really does them justice.

That wouldn't happen to be the 3rd edition Space Marines cover, would it?

It's the first codex I ever owned, and I'm sure it had something to do with me starting a Fists army!

As for the drum cover, that bit comes in this bitz pack:

The advert poster shows that cover, and then blend into a photo of an actual tabletop game with Crimson Fists models all spread out over the table. That poster is a big part of the reason I got interested in 40k. (And a big part of the reason that the employees hate cleaning the bathroom, I fear!)

I've made an army list change for March!

Pedro Kantor: 175 COMPLETE
Master of the Forge with Conversion Beamer: 120 COMPLETE
Assault Terminator x9: 360 COMPLETE
Sternguard x10, combi melta x2, power fist: 285 COMPLETE
Rhino: 35 COMPLETE
Tactical squad x10, melta, multimelta, power fist: 200 COMPLETE
Rhino: 35 COMPLETE
Tactical squad x10 plasma gun, plasma cannon, fist: 205 COMPLETE
Dreadnought autocannon x2: 125 COMPLETE
Assault Marine squad x10, flamer x2, thunder hammer: 240 COMPLETE
Scout Marine x5, melta bomb: 80

I also changed my sideboard, removing the razorback that I'm yet to paint, and adding a scout squad and two heavy bolters in its place, which more than makes up for the points difference. If you couldn't tell, I'm really sick of painting tanks!

In other news, I painted up a devastator squad that I didn't add to my challenge:

They're nothing special whatsoever, but I didn't have a squad of "I love my bolter" Marines in the army, and I had to have them somewhere!
And here's my WIP for this month, the 10 scouts, straight out of Advanced Space Crusade:

For all of you who like old school models and can't tell, those scouts are from Advanced Space Crusade, circa 1990! While they will complete my Hobby Progress Challenge for The Independent Characters, I will be posting more Crimson Fists stuff as I paint it. I've got a devastator squad to paint up, and then I'll have a complete battle company! So, for those interested, what do you guys think I should paint next?
- Ironclad Dreadnought
- Scout bikers
- Devastator squad
- Terminators
- Objectives

Well if you go back a page you can see a whole mess of assault Terminators! The ones I have left are tactical Termies - 5 from RT, 5 from 1st edition Space Hulk! Here are some more modern Terminators I painted some time ago:

Haha! Ask and I shall recieve I guess. They look good!

I always tend to prefer troops over vehicles. At least when it comes to painting.

Glad you like em! The only time I really enjoy painting vehicles is with my IG, since I can just drybrush the hell out of them and they come out great. Marine vehicles require more hard edge highlights and thought to make them work. I'm toying with the idea of a Valhallan army with plenty of artillery, so I'll get the chance to paint more IG tanks soon I guess!

My scouts are done!

If you haven't noticed, seven of the scouts have rainbow mohawks because why not?

Hope you enjoy the Advanced Space Crusade retro here! So, you may or may not recall, but a few posts up I was going to have you guys tell me what you'd like to see next - scout bikers, devastators, an ironclad dreadnought or more Terminators. However, I just made an order last week for something very, very cool, and it will be my next big project in this thread! Guess away if you dare...

Also, as my Hobby Challenge is complete, I've retitled this as SRM's Crimson Fists!

Your paint job looks great, even if the models are all sorts of oldschool.

Its always fun to see classic models painted up to modern day standards, and yours look great.

Thanks! I was actually pretty surprised at the level of detail in those old scouts, and their faces were a blast to paint. The design itself is a bit questionable though. I don't really get why they had to have earrings and pirate shirt sleeves, or what that has to do with being a scout, but far be it from I to question Jes Goodwin's work

Love the color scheme. What color did you use for the highlights? Comes out real nice on a dark base.

Ha, I've got some of those scouts and terms, back in the day when you had to cut up your minis to make them look different (I remember the easy solution was to cut off the Mohawk for a bald scout, or you could green stuff some hair).

Oh yeah, I know what you mean! I cut off the chainsword arm on one of the sergeants and glued on a 2nd ed power fist. Liquid Green Stuff helped with that one
Erik_Morkai wrote:Love the color scheme. What color did you use for the highlights? Comes out real nice on a dark base.

The base color is Regal Blue washed with Badab Black. The highlight is just straight up Ultramarines Blue! Sometimes I do an extra light highlight at the corners, like on my dreadnoughts and rhinos. This is usually Ultramarines Blue with a little white mixed in.

I figured out that vallejo model AIR Deep sea blue works great, and since its so thin due to it being made for use in an airbrush, it actually shades and highlights in one go.
